Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for BS or MS Civil Engineers emphasizing in Structural Engineering who are graduating this semester.  Minimum GPA requirement of 3.25.  One of the main requirements is that the candidates have to be U.S. Citizens either by birth or naturalization.   If interested in this  position, please send your resume to Mr. Ben Winter (bdwinter@mtu.edu) and copy Julie Ross (jzross@mtu.edu) in the email as well.

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the structural Engineer level 1, 2 or 3, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.  Additional job responsibilities (outline below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Work as part of the civil, structural, architectural design team in support of maintaining and upgrading facility structural systems and components,
  • Prepare quality technical reports, calculations, and other engineering documents (e.g. specifications),
  • Develop Construction plans and details, (For the purposes of finding candidates, this translates to being familiar with CADD. Either AutoCAD, Siemens NX, or similar – B.W.)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of industry codes and standards, e.g. IBC Codes, ASCE standards, and material standards such as ACI and AISC, (The secret here is to have taken Concrete, Steel, and/or Timber design AND make sure to understand/be familiar with the requirements of ACI 318 Chapter 17 – B.W.)
  • Implement the LANL Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program, including the LANL Engineering Standards, (https://engstandards.lanl.gov/ESM_Chapters.shtml – B.W.)
  • Interface and coordinate with other disciplines and customers during the design and construction activities,

Promote leadership, quality, and safety values in all aspects of job duties.

  • Demonstrated basic knowledge of structural building systems
  • Demonstrated basic understanding of engineering design practices
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge and application of engineering codes and standards
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge and experience with structural engineering design, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and FEA software  (For Engineer 1, FEA is not necessary, but is recommended. I would imagine Matrix Structural Analysis would help here. – B.W.)
  • Developing interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel and customers
  • Bachelor in Science in Civil Engineering (Emphasis in Structures preferred) from an ABET Accredited College of University
  • Requires 1 to 2 years of relevant design experience (Here I would argue that the design projects MTU students work on would count – B.W.)

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of structural building systems
  • Demonstrated working understanding of engineering design practices
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and application of engineering codes and standards
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and experience with structural engineering design, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and FEA software, Provide technical design reviews of peers and younger engineers (FEA is necessary – B.W.)
