What if your next spring break took you beyond the classroom and into the tropical rainforests, coastal wetlands and vibrant cultures of South America?
Join Michigan Tech’s Pavlis Honors College and College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science for a virtual information session on Monday, Oct. 19, from 5-6 p.m. ET, to discover Mapping Sustainability in Suriname, an exciting study-away opportunity returning for spring break 2027.
Led by Parth Bhatt (CFRES), Darnishia Morris and Marika Siegel (both PHC), and Wayne Gersie (OCE), this immersive program combines adventure, cultural exploration and hands-on environmental learning in one of the world’s most forested countries.
Students will explore tropical biodiversity, visit remarkable natural and cultural sites and discover how drones, geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing are helping address real-world conservation challenges, from mangrove protection to tropical forest sustainability. Through interactions with Surinamese communities, researchers and conservation professionals, participants will gain perspectives that extend far beyond traditional classroom learning.
Students from all majors are welcome, and no prior GIS or remote sensing experience is required!
Curious about the experience? Join our virtual information session to learn about the itinerary, academic opportunities, travel arrangements and application process.
