SDH Scavenger Hunt: Sustainable Gems in our Community

“There are tons of sustainable gems hidden throughout Houghton and Hancock.  How many can YOU find?  We are excited to invite you to participate in a month-long community scavenger hunt focused on finding sustainable features in our own neighborhood!  You will have until 11:59pm on October 18, 2020 to take photos with all of the items on our scavenger hunt list.  Every 10 photos submitted to us will get you one entry into our prize drawing.  We will be awarding prize baskets to three winners filled with local products and gift cards to local businesses, valued at over $400.

Want more entries into our prize drawing?  Be on the lookout for bonus tasks on the SDH Instagram/Facebook stories (@mtu.sdh) that will get you an extra entry into our drawing.  These will be time sensitive opportunities, so be ready!!

CEE Career Fair Preview – Company Videos!!

The Career Fair is just around the corner – Wednesday and Thursday of next week, Sept 23 & 24!  I hope you all have it marked on your calendar to attend (virtually), which means that you should be updating your resume and also researching companies!


In the past the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department hosted a Preview Networking Reception the evening before the Career Fair.  Since the Career Fair is virtual this year, we asked the companies to send us a video showcasing what they do – to share with you!  These companies are looking to hire our majors – Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geospatial Engineering & Construction Management!

My name is Ankur Singh and I am Design Build Coordinator and Project Engineer for the New Gordie Howe International Bridge Project in Detroit, MI. I am an experienced bridge builder and I have worked on Tapanzee Bridge (Stay Cable)  and San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge (Self-Anchored Suspension Bridge) previously. The joint venture is called Birding North America and I represent Fluor Enterprises, which is one of the partner companies of the joint venture.

We are hiring full time field engineer for the stay cable bridge and would like to reach out to the local schools to see if any of your students are looking a new exciting opportunity where they would like to work on and learn how build bridges. I would be highly obliged if you can pass the information to your students and they can contact me directly if they are interested. The needs are immediate.

Following is a brief description of what we are looking:

  • Ability to learn and grasp new concepts.
  • Civil Engineering Degree (Structural Engineering Emphasis) or Construction Engineering Degree.

3M is registered for tomorrows Partners’ Preview Fair. There are still time slots available if students want to take advantage meeting with them prior to the Virtual Career Fair.

3M is mainly looking for environmental engineers with past experience or interest in a manufacturing setting in both full-time and internship roles. 3M’s “schedule” is titled “Environmental, Health, and Safety Jobs at 3M.”

This is a great way for students who are serious about 3M to chat about their resume prior to the Virtual Career Fair in a couple weeks.

Partner Preview Career Fair Tomorrow

Tomorrow (Wednesday, Sept 9) 15 companies are recruiting students tomorrow (from 10 until 7) during the Partner Preview Career Fair. 

Students need to schedule an appointment in the Career Fair Plus app to meet with recruiters. Here are some instructions:

  1. Download Career Fair Plus App
  2. Select Michigan Tech as your school
  3. Set up your profile
  4. Upload your resume
  5. Select the event “Fall 2020 Partner’s Preview Career Fair” 
  6. Click on “Employers”
  7. Click on blue “meetings” button
  8. Click “view meetings”
  9. Select an appointment time
  10. Show up for your appointment time

Job Postings: Procter & Gamble

Procter and Gamble will be participating in the virtual career fair in a few weeks. My team and I are based out of P&G’s manufacturing facility in Green Bay, WI where we manufacture some of P&G’s iconic paper brands in Bounty, Charmin, and Puffs. We are hiring for both full time and intern manufacturing engineering positions. Our new engineers commonly start their careers as either process engineers where they focus on building, maintaining, and improving the systems we use to operate the equipment in our facility while building capability in our workforce or as plant engineers where they focus on utilizing the engineering work processes to evaluate and install the capability in our facilities in order to meet our business goals.

I’m hoping you can share this information with the Environmental Engineering department. It would be great to have some of these students fill out our online application and complete the associated assessments, which take about 30 minutes. We will have a team at the virtual career fair later this month and will be doing interviews the following day. Students who take and pass the assessment before the career fair typically are scheduled for an interview (After GPA confirmation). The directions to apply are as follows:
