SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship) Applications Now Open

SURF Applications Now Open

Applications for 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs) are now open. Fellowship recipients will spend the summer working on an individual research project under the guidance of a Michigan Tech faculty mentor.

SURFs are open to all Tech undergraduates who have at least one semester remaining after the summer term. Awards are up to $4,500. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Feb. 9.

Students who have questions about the program or application process can take advantage of a virtual drop-in advising session with the SURF coordinator, Robert Handler (ChE).

Scholarship: Rail Transportation

The Rail Transportation Program (RTP) at Michigan Tech is offering scholarships for students with a demonstrated interest in the railroad industry. Details are on the RTP website.

Scholarship amounts range from $1,000 to $2,500 for the 2023-24 school year. To apply, submit the 2023-2024 Rail Transportation Program Railroad Scholarships Application. The deadline for applications is Jan. 10.

Orientation Executive Staff (OES) Hiring Now Open

The Wahtera Center has opened the application process for OES. Are you looking for something to do this summer? Do you want to stay in the Houghton area to enjoy all the beauty that Keweenaw County has to offer during the summer months? Have you wanted experience planning and executing a large program like Orientation? Are you thinking that you really should be doing an internship this summer but don’t know what to do or where to go for an internship? You can use the experiences that you will have planning OTL Training Week and O-Week. It is a great opportunity to have one of the largest student-planned and student-run programs on campus under your belt. We are looking for students who are hardworking, creative, self-motivated, and who are excited to bring the New Huskies to campus!

This year you will need to apply through Handshake. You will also need to provide 2- letters of recommendation, 1 of those letters must be from a staff/faculty on the MTU campus.

Award Amount

One scholarship for $3,000 will be awarded to the qualifying applicant who submits the winning essay. The scholarship will be presented or announced at the CSHEMA Annual Conference in July. The winner will receive an invitation to attend the CSHEMA Annual Conference, with the cost of attendance (registration, hotel, and airfare) covered by CSHEMA.

Career Services Hosting On-Campus Job Expo

Career Services is hosting an on-campus jobs expo Jan. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge in the MUB. Students are encouraged to come check out the job opportunities available right here on campus. Many departments will be represented.

On-campus jobs provide opportunities for Michigan Tech students. A part-time job offers income to students who need it and is an important co-curricular opportunity. As a co-curricular opportunity, on-campus work can lead to internships and co-ops, opening the door to full-time offers immediately after graduation. It can also help a student establish a strong foundation for research that leads to enhanced graduate school opportunities.
