Scholarship: Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers Society

Do you qualify?

At this point, Minnesota residency is still required for our scholarships for At-Large schools. The Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers Society (MSES) provides many scholarships, up to $2,000 each per year to students who will be juniors or seniors in Civil Engineering in the next academic year.

Applicants are expected to have a career interest in transportation. Job examples might include working for:

  • governmental agencies (DOT’s, counties, cities, etc.),
  • private engineering firms providing transportation related services (consultants),
  • materials suppliers for the transportation industry,
  • working for contractors or construction companies who build transportation facilities, etc.

Your work could be in any of the broad-based specialty areas that support transportation like:

  • geotechnical engineering
  • water resources/hydraulics
  • transportation planning
  • structural engineering
  • roadway design
  • environmental engineering
  • ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems
  • pavement design
  • other related fields

Info Session: Spice Group (TONIGHT 6-8 pm)

Mind Trekkers Spring Break/Volunteer Opportunity

Mind Trekkers will be taking 50 volunteers to Charlotte, NC for Spring Break. Not only is this an chance to travel and explore, it is also a volunteer opportunity for students to share their passion of STEM with others!

WHAT IS MIND TREKKERS?
Mind Trekkers is a student organization that travels both locally and nationally to help promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning with our nearly 200 different interactive science demonstrations! Whether it is a science and engineering festival for thousands of students or a small local event, we aim to show students both the fun and importance of STEM fields. We have already reached 1.9 million students in 15 different states since forming in 2010.

SPRING BREAK TRIP TO CHARLOTTE, NC
March 10-18
Already sick of the winter, but can’t afford the cost to travel somewhere warm? Have a passion for STEM education? Come travel with Mind Trekkers to Charlotte, NC for Spring Break! For only $100 (+ $50 deposit), you will have your rooming, several meals, and transportation covered! Planned activities include: SkyWild, Greensboro Science Center, and the US National Whitewater Center. We will be hosting the Passport to STEM festival on the Thursday and Friday of the trip, where you will have the opportunity to excite over four thousand students about science & engineering with fun and hands-on demonstrations!

The Railroad Engineering & Activities Club (REAC), an AREMA Student Chapter at Michigan Tech, would like to invite you to attend our monthly presentation and General Business Meeting (GBM) on February 13th at 7:00 PM in Rekhi Hall 214. This month’s presentation will be given by Michigan Tech faculty member Dr. Bill Sproule, who will be talking about the history of streetcar operations in Michigan’s Copper Country. Associate of State Dame Safety Officials – Student Paper Competition

ASDSO invites students to enter the Student Paper Competition, open to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees at U.S. universities or colleges. We invite students to submit papers on dam and levee safety!

Topics may include traditional areas of design engineering, structural and geotechnical analysis, hydrology, hydraulics, construction, risk management and hazard mitigation, emergency action planning, dam security, and policy. In addition, case studies, emerging and innovative technologies, and senior capstone projects are encouraged.

Each winning paper will receive $500 and a travel stipend to present at Dam Safety 2018 in Seattle, WA, in September 2018. Winning papers will also be published in the annual conference proceedings. Other selected entries will be invited to participate in the Dam Safety 2018 Poster & Lightning Talk Forum. Conference registration fees will be waived for all participating students enrolled in colleges or universities in the U.S. who present a valid student ID (that’s a $1000 value!). Both US citizens and non-US citizens are eligible.

All student entries must include a 350-word (maximum) abstract, and should be submitted online. The student paper competition also requires an executive summary of at least 1,200 words. (Please note: the full paper is not due at the deadline, only the abstract and executive summary, so please send in your ideas!).
