Scholarship: MN Erosion Control 2018 Scholarship

MECA Memorial Scholarship Applications are now being accepted!  Please forward to students that may qualify!

QUALIFICATIONS:
To be eligible for the MECA Scholarship, one must be a student with intent to complete an engineering or science degree.  They should also demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career involving stormwater management or erosion and sediment control.  They must have a grade point average of 2.5 or above and be a Minnesota resident. The college they attend does not have to be located within the state of Minnesota. Both new college students and those currently enrolled are encouraged to apply.  MECA awards one $500 scholarship per year.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Fill out the Scholarship Application form (go to www.mnerosion.org to download the form).  Submit an essay.  Student needs to write an essay stating why they feel they deserve to receive the MECA Scholarship.  Please indicate objectives, and information about educational, career, and personal goals.  Demonstrate talent by writing about any special interests or special circumstances that the selection committee may consider.  Include information on evidence of leadership and community service.  Essay format:  One page, 11 point font size with 1” margins. Use name and essay name as the title.

Return the application and essay by mail or email (digital copy is preferred) by DECEMBER 1, 2017 to:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION  Once awarded, proof of school registration for the upcoming semester is required before release of the scholarship check. The student must furnish any other applicable transcripts for the Scholarship Committee to consider. All applicants will be notified, by letter, of their eligibility and the results of their applications. The scholarship winner will be invited to attend the Minnesota Erosion Control Association’s annual conference in January.

Funding for Students to Attend NCSU Women in Engineering Program, March 1-2, 2018

I’m writing to let you know about an opportunity for engineering undergraduate and Master’s students to attend a Women in Engineering Event at North Carolina State University.  The “We are W.E. (Women in Engineering) Program” is a networking and recruiting event within Civil Engineering Department at North Carolina State University to encourage the presence of women in civil engineering research and academics. As part of this program, we are happy to support travel for undergraduate and Master’s students who are interested in civil engineering research to visit NCSU on March 1-2, 2018.  The We are W.E. Program will include a research workshop, career-focused seminar and panel, poster symposium, and meetings with professors. Short Term 16 day Study Abroad Opportunity – UWP 3030 Cycling Infrastructure in The Netherlands

Are you interested in studying abroad, but also want to get a summer internship? How about 16 days of bicycling around the world famous cycling infrastructure in The Netherlands (Netherlands where 27% of ALL their daily trips are made by bicycle and it’s easy riding – it is flat terrain!) where we will study bicycle infrastructure, work with students at a Dutch university, meet professionals who plan and design, and so much more? The course runs Sunday, May 20 – Monday, June 4 – plenty of time for you to get back for an internship. The course is offered out of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering Department (by a professor who is a MTU Civil Engineering aluma), yet is available to students at other campuses, such as Michigan Tech, as well.

We will spend 16 days bicycling in large cities (Amsterdam, Zwolle, Utrecht, Houten, Rotterdam, Eindhoven) and small towns in The Netherlands. We will work with students and faculty at Windesheim University and professional designers and planners of the amazing Dutch cycling network. We travel within cities by bicycle and between cities using their sophisticated passenger rail system. This course will give you hands on experience using and understanding how a country creates safe cycling infrastructure. 27% of ALL trips in the Netherlands are made by bicycle! Take this course to experience that!
 
Explore The Netherlands in Europe while earning course credit! On the UW-Platteville campus This course counts for 3 credits of technical elective in civil and environmental engineering AND for 3 credits of international education general education credits. I am happy to help work with your department to see how this course can transfer back to Michigan Tech.

Also attached is a flier that shows the course details. Note that the cost is listed at $4200 per person- this is the ‘high’ cost – as soon as there are at least 8 people signed up (the cap is 12 students), we can purchase our airline tickets and solidify the airfare, which will likely be lower than my budgeted amount.  This cost includes the 3 credit course, round trip airfare from Chicago, 5 day Eurail pass, bicycle rentals, all hotels and hostels, all breakfasts, and bus transfers. Funds not spent will be refunded to you.

  • Willing to travel (mostly West of Chicago for UPRR and BNSF projects)

Student research development opportunity

The Pavlis Honors College is hosting a series of research-related workshops designed to educate students on best practices to enhance their research efforts.  The next workshop in the series will be held on Tuesday evening, November 14 from 6-7pm in Library 243.  The focus of this workshop is “How Not to Plagiarize!” and will be facilitated by the Library’s Jenn Sams.  The workshop is open to anyone on campus interested in learning more about this topic so that they can apply it to their research endeavors.  A list of upcoming workshops can be found here.

Registration will reopen TONIGHT: Additional course sections have been added

Spring registration had closed for a few days but will reopen on Tuesday, November 14 at 10pm.

Schedule additions:

  1. Additional section of CEE3810 (Soil Mechanics) lab, Thursdays, 8-11 am.
  2. Humanities has added another section of HU 2830, Public Speaking and Multimedia and HU 2810 Research and Writing in Communication.  Both of these courses count for the Communication/Composition requirement.
  3. Humanities also added another section of HU 2503 Introduction to Literature, which is on the Critical And Creative Thinking list.
  4. Humanities has added an online section of HU 3120, Technical and Professional Communication.  There are 9 spaces available in that course.
  5. First year students who have scores of 3 or higher on the AP Spanish exam but weren’t able to take Spanish in the fall can take HU 3293 and get the same 9 placement credits after finishing with a B or higher. We are not able to offer HU 3294, 3295, or 3296 this spring (these are the classes designated for students with AP credit).  HU 3293 counts as an alternative to UN 1025 Global Issues.

CM 5900 is for graduate students.
