The Chemical Engineering Department is pleased to recognize Isabel Chapa, advised by Dr. Yixin Liu, as the September 2026 Safety Student of the Month!
Isabel demonstrates outstanding safety leadership by taking ownership of lab safety, setting a positive example for her peers, and speaking up about unsafe practices—even when doing so may be uncomfortable.
During a recent brainstorming session with the ChE Safety Committee, Isabel provided thoughtful feedback and identified how sewer odors caused by dry drain traps in ChemSci have become normalized. Her observation highlights the importance of recognizing potential safety concerns and taking action to address them.
Isabel’s willingness to speak up, challenge unsafe practices, and encourage a culture of safety makes her an excellent choice for this recognition.
