BASIC Outreach Seeking Student Tutors

Do you enjoy helping others? BASIC (Building Adult Skills in Computing) is seeking students who wish to help community members struggling with digital technology. Offered in partnership with the Portage Lake District Library in downtown Houghton, BASIC help is delivered in a combination of in-person and online help sessions. BASIC tutors come from departments and programs campus-wide.

In this fun and rewarding outreach program, Michigan Tech students work one-on-one with community members, not only “fixing problems,” but empowering them to become confident, competent digital citizens. The program also offers insights into the challenges of ordinary people as they make their way into the digital world. Joining one of these sessions for even a few minutes is an eye-opening introduction to the obstacles that older adults and other newcomers face as they attempt to embrace digital technology.
