In the Advanced Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) course at Michigan Technological University, students explore the functionality and application of vision and sensor-based sorting systems using robots and PLC for recovering recyclable material from waste. The class projects are performed on an integrated Allen-Bradley PLC, vision, and a Fanuc robotic system. In the waste management industry, there is an opportunity to recover large amounts of aluminum and other recyclables from landfill. Automation is a possible solution to increase safety and efficiency while reducing costs.
