Where You Will Work   

Interns are assigned to various locations in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Iowa, supporting our business in a variety of disciplines. 

What You Will Do

Under general supervision, work directly with exploration geologic staff to assist in various projects as needed. May require spending extended time at various Freeport-McMoRan locations. May be a combination of field and office work.

  • Creating sample identification labels and submitting samples for laboratory analysis using computerized data transfer systems. 
  • Retrieving laboratory analyses for geological materials and loading results into a relational database Coordinating submittal of standard reference materials and preparation and submittal of duplicate samples to laboratory. 
  • Performing routine comparisons of reference and duplicate samples against laboratory determinations from original samples; preparing daily and monthly evaluations of laboratory accuracy and precision. 
  • Entering geological codes into computerized databases and evaluating and validating codes against established standards. 
  • Digitizing geological maps and cross-sections. 
  • Logging drill cuttings and drill core samples to identify rock types, copper mineralization, alteration, and acid consumption. 
  • Mapping pit walls. 
  • District exploration and geology department support. 
  • Compile drilling, geological mapping, geochemical, alteration, geophysical, and property information Performs other duties as required. 

What You Bring To Freeport

  • Currently enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year university pursuing a degree, bachelor’s or higher, in Geology or closely related field; OR 
  • Recent graduate (within 12 months prior to internship start date) pursuing a degree, bachelor’s or higher in Geology or closely related field. 
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Possesses strong data analysis and problem-solving skills. 
  • Highly accurate and detail oriented. 
  • Possesses strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Demonstrates initiative, organizational skills and ability to work well under pressure.  
  • Demonstrates ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment.

  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the workday.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and any other protective equipment as required.

Internship: Mining Engineer Internship – Northern Star

What’s the role?

The Mining Engineer Intern reports to the Mine Superintendent, and the primary role is to assist the Mine Engineering team with operational and engineering requirements. This includes using site procedures and processes to conduct specific tasks under the direction of Senior Engineers, and includes working in an office and / or underground workplaces.

Duties include:

  • Create mining instructions for the direction of operational activities including development instructions, drilling designs, blast plans, etc.
  • Conduct post mining reconciliation reviews.
  • Conduct mine area inspections to ensure mine instructions have been executed and quality aspects are in line with expectations.
  • Conduct mine inspections / surveys to record the mine operating environmental conditions and report finding to senior operational personnel (e.g. ventilation surveys, monthly area inspections, etc.)
  • Develop short term mining schedules and present these to the technical and operating team.

The specifics:

  • Progressing towards an Engineering Degree from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Current Driver’s License.
  • Computer literacy Microsoft Office (extensive excel skills is a requirement).
  • Good communication skills.
  • Excellent data analyses skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain or exceed best industry practice in all engineering tasks.
  • Awareness of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act & Regulations.
  • Be able to pass a background check and post offer physical.

The Details:

Working a 28 days on, 14 days off rotating schedule of days and nights, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
