This Opportunity

Our Earth & Environment Team is seeking an Early Career Geotechnical Engineer to work out of our Anchorage, AK office. 

Takes part in providing local geotechnical engineering assistance for the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector.  Tasks may include basic assistance with the research, design, analysis, concept development, and construction of roads, buildings, tunnels, dams, canals, levees, bridges, water supply systems, underground storage, and sewage treatment.  Generates accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project.  Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

  • Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, soil/water/sludge/rock samples, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.    
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements.
  • Assist with performing basic professional geotechnical engineering work relating to proposed and existing site conditions, including subsurface investigations, soil foundation engineering, settlement analysis, soil erosion, lateral earth pressures, geological hazards, underground water, and slope stability for commercial, industrial, building, environmental, infrastructure, and transportation projects.
  • Perform routine geotechnical engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements, operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, systems, and infrastructure. 
  • Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing basic technical assistance on various environmental, design, and construction issues involving rock and soil mechanics, and investigating subsurface and geological conditions to design and build foundations, earth structures, and pavement sub-grades. 
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site notebook/logs.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, or other engineering design software’s).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Willingness to work on projects across business sectors, performing a variety of tasks, sometimes on short notice. 
  • Travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements. Travel methods may include boat, small aircrafts, helicopters, snow machines, 4-wheelers, etc.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or closely related discipline 
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
  • Familiarity with permafrost engineering protocols. 
  • Enthusiasm for engagement with field teams. 
  • A client-centric mindset and desire to work within a larger team focused on timely, high-quality service delivery.

RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:

Lead Safety

  • Provide leadership and active involvement in LNA Safety programs;
  • Ensure consistent application of the highest level of safety into design and plans;

Mine Planning (Regional)

  • Lead the development of regional mine plans (as applicable),
  • Ensure consistent application of Lhoist mine planning standards and programs across the region,
  • Provide training and support to the individual sites in the rollout and use of the various Lhoist standards, tools, and programs.

Mine Planning (Site)

  • Lead the Quarry/Mine Mining Team in the development and implementation of the mine plans/schedules.  This includes ensuring revisions to the various mine plans are completed and updated on a timely basis;
  • Lead the development and revision of the various Geological, As-built, QC and other deposit computer models;
  • Tracking performance and compliance of the quarry/mine operations team to the published mine plans, documenting the conditions that lead to issues which will to be utilized in the next revision cycle;

Technical Design / Data Analysis:

  • Able to gather, sort, and analyze various sources of information (mobile equipment, surveys, cost databases, and related) to determine specific production and performance information;
  • Able to use this information to develop safe, technically competent, economically sound design documents, programs, cost models, and studies;

Project Management:

  • Lead the development of project scope and conducted preliminary planning, preparing design documents, and cost models;
  • Support the CAPEX process through technical and financial evaluations, as needed;
  • Lead in contractor vetting and selection;
  • Function as needed in various project team roles

Site Visits / Audits:

  • Coordinate and conduct routine technical inspections, audits, review meetings, and work sessions at the various quarries and mines;
  • Provide on-site support, technical expertise, or other assistance as requested by the sites or quarries to address or support technical issues;

Perform other duties as needed

ATTRIBUTES:

  • Strong practical experience with Underground Mining Techniques (Room & Pillar preferred) background, along a solid understanding of Surface Mining Techniques; some background in surveying practices and techniques.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Must be physically able to perform work assigned and capable of accessing all plant locations, which could include heights, confined spaces, climbing ladders or stairs, and accessing tunnels.
  • Will be working in both an office environment and in a mining environment, which may include exposure to:  temperature extremes, noise, uneven surfaces, vibration, oils, and atmospheric conditions such as dust, fumes, and metallic particles.
  • May be required to periodically perform the following actions: Standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing, and sitting.
  • Will require periodic travel to each of the regional locations as needed.
  • Must be physically able to perform work assigned.
  • Must be physically capable of accessing all plant locations.
  • Tolerate working outside in severe weather conditions as well as exposure to industrial high temperature, noise and dust.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in geology, mining, or related engineering / technical degree and/or equivalent proven work experience in the field

PREFFERED EDUCATION:

  •  BS / MS in Mining Engineering or Geology and/or PE Registration

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have at least 3-5 years of progressive technical responsibility in mining environment.  Previous leadership or supervision experience is a plus.

PREFFERED EXPERIENCE:

  •  4-6 years of previous underground and/or above-ground mining and blasting experience.

Position Overview

This position will assist the project team and Project Manager in providing field support, and technical assistance on environmental investigation and remediation projects.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant technical field.
  • Typically requires 0-2 years of experience. 
  • Ability to safely perform various routine field activities including but not limited to applying proper sampling techniques for all environmental media and overseeing and directing subcontractors. 
  • Exhibits strong work ethic, positive attitude, and general enthusiasm for the work.
  • Entry level data evaluation and analytical skills.

Essential Duties

  • Field Activities:
    • Assists other technical staff in calibration of sampling/monitoring equipment, soil sampling, well installation, development and purging, groundwater sampling, vapor/indoor air sampling, remediation monitoring, and oversight.
  • Project Assistance:
    • Assists project team in preparation and review of data tables, soil boring logs, and figures and other components of technical reports.

Physical Demands/Work Environment Conditions

This position works predominantly in the field working independently or as part of a larger team at exterior project sites (i.e., industrial/brownfield facilities, monitoring wells, treatment systems, construction projects) to perform sample collection, recording of operational/meter parameters, and oversight of subcontractors (e.g., drillers, heavy equipment operators, truckers).  These field activities require the ability to drive to different project sites and physically move around outdoors in various terrains, in adverse weather conditions and occasionally for extended or irregular hours.  Conducting work involves the use of hand-held monitoring instruments and tools, as well as water sampling equipment, which requires the ability to routinely lift and carry objects, stand, walk, reach, bend, squat, kneel and twist.  Office work is primarily stationary/sedentary using a computer and keyboard/mouse requiring repetitive hand movements.

Base Salary Range:  $65,000 – $75,000. This salary range is based on what Roux in good faith believes it might pay at the time of posting for this position and for this geographic location.  Actual compensation may vary based on job-related factors such as relevant work experience, market conditions, education/training, certifications, skill sets, and internal equity.  In addition, this position is eligible for performance bonuses based on individual job performance and the profitability of the firm.
