Job Description:

We approach problems with creativity and innovation. The Richmond, VA office is seeking an entry level (Staff) Scientist to join our team of multi-disciplinary professionals. We are looking for a motivated candidate able to learn quickly, with a desire to develop both field and analytical skills, and a desire to be part of a strong team.

The successful candidate will be able and willing to travel nationally and internationally to support field work during design and construction of projects, particularly data center projects.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Use GIS and GPS to aid in planning and executing geotechnical related field work 
  • Observation and oversight of drilling including soil/rock logging and installation of monitoring wells 
  • Oversight of subcontractors including drillers and traffic control 
  • Create basic plans and figures using AutoCAD and GIS 
  • Assign and review laboratory tests 
  • Observe geotechnical-related construction and perform materials testing 
  • Plan and coordinate geotechnical and materials testing field work 
  • Prepare field reports 
  • Review geotechnical and materials testing reports 
  • Perform calculations to support geotechnical designs 
  • Provide support on preparation of geotechnical reports and proposals 

Required Skills/Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or a related field such as Earth Sciences 
  • 0-3 years of professional experience 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Positive attitude 
  • Ability to multi-task 
  • Strong work ethic and a desire for continual self-improvement 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills 
  • Willingness and ability to perform outdoor field work
  • Willingness and ability to travel (up to 75%); and

  • Prior internship or professional work in a related field
  • GIT certification

We approach problems with creativity and innovation.  Our Albany-area office of Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Staff Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing practice.  We are looking for a motivated candidate with an interest in developing both field and analytical skills, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of a strong team.

Job Responsibilities:

Perform the following geotechnical and dams engineering tasks:

  • Perform engineering activities throughout all phases of a project lifecycle, including field inspections, subsurface explorations, evaluation, geotechnical analysis, geotechnical and dam design, and engineering services during construction. 
  • Prepare and review geotechnical design calculations, engineering reports, construction drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Work as a team member within the Albany, NY office and across other Schnabel offices to effectively balance workload among available resources.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel, including assignments that may last several weeks or months away from the office. Field work might include:
  • Collection of data and measurements.
  • Observation and logging of geotechnical test borings.
  • Observation of construction activities, and testing materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, masonry and reinforcing steel.
  • Communication with contractors, engineers, and project managers.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • 0-3 years of professional experience.
  • A strong work ethic and the desire to perform professionally at a high level.

  • Critical thinking and the ability to begin and progress designs.

  • A Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, and future ability to become a Licensed Professional Engineer.

Job Description:

We approach problems with creativity and innovation. Schnabel is seeking a temporary full-time intern with a Geology and or Civil Engineering background to support our growing GeoDesign group. The emphasis for this position is broadening the intern’s practical knowledge and experience by applying professional principles to real problems under the supervision of senior Geo-Professionals. The position will typically be held from mid-May through mid-August of 2026. Other timeframes may be considered if necessary.

Our GeoDesign group provides geophysical services, geotechnical engineering, geostructural engineering, and infrastructure monitoring.  As part of the GeoDesign team, you will support services on a variety of projects ranging from hazard identification and subsurface explorations to geotechnical, design, geological, geophysical, and construction oversight services.  Our team provides services to owners, contractors, and engineering firms on a wide range of projects, including in the transportation, power/energy, water, and federal markets.   

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Performing geophysical, geological, and geotechnical field work including assisting with geophysical data collection and observing geotechnical subsurface explorations
  • Create basic plans and figures using AutoCAD, GIS, and Surfer, and or other mapping software
  • Provide support to geologists and engineers preparing geophysical and geotechnical proposals and reports  
  • Travel will be required

Required Skills/Experience: 

  • Current enrollment in a geology or geophysics Bachelors or Master’s program or other relevant engineering or science programs may be considered 
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills including note taking in the field and computer literacy
  • Ability to work with direction as part of a team  
  • Willingness to perform a variety of tasks including office and field work  
  • Desire and willingness to work outdoors
  • Ability to routinely lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work long days in the field up to 12 hours.

Preferred Skills/Experience: 

  • Interest in shallow subsurface geophysics, and/or geology, or geotechnical engineering for civil engineering applications
  • Prior professional work or summer intern work in a related field
