As a Chemical Engineering Intern at Cleveland-Cliffs, the projects assigned will vary based on the intern’s education level and plant location, but will generally reflect the duties outlined below. 

Summary of Responsibilities:  

  • Analyze product failure data and laboratory test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions 
  • Conduct tests on raw materials or finished products to ensure their quality 
  • Determine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials 
  • Design and direct the testing and/or control of processing procedures 
  • Determine appropriate methods for fabricating and joining materials 
  • Evaluate technical specifications and economic factors relating to process or product design objectives 
  • Monitor material performance and evaluate material deterioration 
  • Plan and implement laboratory operations for the purpose of developing material and fabrication procedures that meet cost, product specification, and performance standards 
  • Review new product plans and make recommendations for ease of manufacturability while meeting the product design objectives, such as strength, weight, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and cost 
  • Potentially supervise a crew of hourly employees 
  • Various other duties as assigned to support the business 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Enrollment in Bachelor of Science program in Chemical Engineering or other related technical degrees 
  • Completion of at least sophomore year of study by the summer of 2026

  • Business & Operations: Supply Chain, Finance/Accounting, IT/Computer Science, Human Resources, Safety & Health

This full-time, paid internship program runs from June 2026 to August 2026, with start and end dates tailored to align with your schedule and our business needs. As an intern, you’ll work 40 hours per week, gaining valuable, hands-on experience in a professional environment while contributing to meaningful projects within your field of study.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of specific projects aligned with your interests, skills, and career aspirations while addressing business objectives.
  • Support daily departmental activities, gaining practical experience in both operational and strategic tasks.

Education and Academic Requirements:

  • Undergraduate students with at least one year of university completed, majoring in applicable mining-related fields.
  • Must be enrolled for the Fall 2026 semester (proof of enrollment required).

 

Skills and Experience:

  • Interest in or experience in the mining industry.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with confidence in engaging with leaders.
  • Proficiency in research, writing, and computer skills.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age prior to the date of hire and able to commit to employment between June 1 and September 1, 2026.
  • Understanding and compliance with safety protocols.
  • Valid U.S. work authorization and a valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical, including drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ability to meet the required physical demands, including exerting 20–50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds constantly.
