Job Description:

General Objectives:

The Open Pit Geologist is a salaried exempt position and typically works an 8 on, 6 off, schedule offset from other personnel to provide up to 7 day/week coverage for this role.  Responsible for production of mine site mapping and drawings, and design drawings.  The position requires an intensive use of CAD (computer-aided drafting).  Graphic design work is occasionally required.  This position is responsible for providing ore control calculation and generating field survey maps in a timely and accurate manner.  The position requires implementation of Blast Movement Monitoring technology including placement of Blast Movement Monitors in drill holes, post blast survey of monitor locations and drone survey of pre and post blast surfaces.  This position will assist as requested by engineers in the completion of daily, month-end, annual, and other various mine production reports. 

Key Areas of Responsibilities & Duties:

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Development and implementation of blast hole/ore control programs that reconcile well with mine models.
• Development and implementation of blast movement ore control programs in conjunction with operations personnel and engineers that result in improved mining compliance and delivery of ores to process.
• Development and implementation of geotechnical monitoring programs.
• Development and evaluation of resource models.
• Pit mapping and data analysis for both mine modeling and geotechnical evaluation.
• Monitors ground water management systems.
• Blast monitoring with respect to geologic structures.
• Monitoring and evaluating geological and assay data quality.
• Resource and mine production reconciliation studies.

Required Skills:

• Knowledge of the principles and methods used in open pit hard rock mining.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with various individuals, crews, departments and organizational levels. 
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex or diverse information.

• Bachelor’s degree (B.S) in Geologic Engineering or Geology

Purpose & Scope of The Position:  

The purpose of this position is to ensure the proper classification of ore and waste in every mining layback and to ensure that material mined in the open pits at Robinson is characterized and classified properly and delivered to the correct destination. The geologist will ensure that all necessary assays and additional test results are received so that blasted material can be released for mining. This position is also central to coordination of Mine to Mill communication. The scope includes oversight of all ore control functions, including preparation and distribution of Daily Maps. The geologist will map all blast hole patterns and log the blast hole cuttings. Assist in geologic mapping/drone flights of the highwalls in all the various laybacks in the active pits and stockpiles. Finally, the geologist will assist in collecting monthly samples required by the Environmental department for compliance with our operating permits.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:  

• Follow safe work procedures and best practices. 
• Supervise the Ore Control process of compiling all the necessary information, verify that all relevant data is in AcQuire, import the data to MinePlan, verify that the drill hole data and model data are valid then classify all ore and waste materials appropriately.
• Coordinate flow of Ore Control information as it relates Mine to Mill communication and cooperation.
• Supervise the performance of four geologic technicians with respect to the Ore Control process and other necessary work.
• Assist with highwall geologic maps and ensure blast hole geologic maps are fully integrated.
• Assist in managing ore stockpiles needed for metallurgical blending.
• Supervise the implementation of blending guidelines with an emphasis on monitoring adherence to blending plans. Ensure that the Mine and Mill are constantly informed of the progress in following the plan and that both departments are ready to make adjustments to plans as necessary to ensure safe, efficient, and profitable results.
• Map all pertinent geologic features present in blast hole patterns.
• Perform all necessary Ore Control task including data entry, generation of daily maps, ore and waste cut generation, and updating the AXIS/MinePlan ore control model as necessary.
• Export mining cuts to Terrain.
• Drone license or willingness to get drone license with employment.
• Comply with all RNMC environmental regulations.
• Perform additional duties as needed to support the success of Robinson Nevada Mining Company and KGHM.

Required Qualifications:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Geometallurgy.  
• Experience: One to three years’ mining and/or exploration experience.
• Licenses: Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Education: A Master’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Geometallurgy. 
• Experience:
  • Experience in the ore control role, including geometallurgical blending in an open pit mining environment will be highly regarded.
  • Experience with hydrothermal copper deposits. Knowledge of intrusive centered systems.
  • Experience mentoring entry level geologists. 
  • Experience in a Mill or other process background.

Role accountabilities:

As part of this role, you will be responsible for assisting Project Managers (PMs) and Task Managers (TMs) in planning and executing environmental site characterization, investigation, and remediation tasks.

Fieldwork will be a central part of this position, providing you the opportunity to work outdoors while receiving training in the collection and documentation of soil, air/vapor, groundwater, and surface water samples. You will oversee subcontractors, including drilling operations and the installation of groundwater wells. Additional responsibilities include remedial system operation and maintenance checks and repairs, facility inspections, soil gas (vapor intrusion) surveys, among other tasks. A strong focus on health and safety is essential when performing fieldwork.

• Field preparation, equipment procurement, and analytical laboratory sampling coordination.
• Field activities may include conducting site visits, site characterization activities included, but not limited to, performing drilling oversight for soil sampling and/or groundwater well installation, groundwater sampling, and/or excavation oversight. Field activities may include oversight of remedial system installation activities.
• Provide emergency response support (environmental sample planning and collection, rail client and state/federal regulator correspondence, onsite contractor oversight) for train derailments/HAZMAT spills, with the potential to travel throughout the US.
• Writing and preparing technical reports, work plans, letters, and memoranda.
• Office work will include task coordination, data analysis, proposal development and costing, health & safety plan preparation, report writing, regulatory and historical file review, project strategy development, schedule and budget management.
