GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) is seeking a Geologic Data Technician/Geospatial Technology Analyst in Laramie, WY. This position offers a unique opportunity to work as a contract employee and contribute to the WSGS’ mission of promoting the beneficial and environmentally sound use of Wyoming’s geologic, mineral, and energy resources. The Geologic Data Technician will work on data processing, quality control, and digital delivery, directly supporting public access to high-quality, vetted geoscience data.

This position is expected to last approximately one year, with the possibility of an extension.

  • Education: Bachelor’s (typically in The Sciences)
  • Experience: 0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in GIS or Data Management or related field)
  • Skills: Detail-oriented technical person; familiarity with ESRI products including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online; strong collaboration skills; ability to conduct independent office work
  • Wyoming Geology: Familiarity with Wyoming’s geology and natural resources is a strong plus

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.

  • Digitize and attribute geologic features (lines, polygons, and points) using GIS software.
  • Develop, maintain, and support GIS layers within an enterprise GIS environment.
  • Make informed GIS decisions regarding projection types, topology rules, and other technical specifications.
  • Generate and compile data and associated metadata to create geologic maps and related products for diverse audiences, including the public, industry, government, and educators.
  • Maintain and support the agency’s online mapping resources.
  • Perform comprehensive quality control (automated and manual) on all databases and geodatabases to ensure data accuracy, including implementing data validation and topology checks.
  • Identify data discrepancies and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in the development of agency databases, ensuring they meet the standards set by agency, State, and federal mandates through the use of computer and various database software programs.
  • Assist with various data entry or data cleanup projects as needed.

Job: Mine Geologist – Integra

POSITION OVERVIEW:  Mine Geologist

Reports to the Senior Geologist. The Mine Geologist is responsible for all aspects of in-pit geologic technical support to the Mine Technical Services team, Mine Operations, and Processing Plants. Will proactively ensure safe blast hole and surface mapping of alteration, lithology, mineralogy, and structural data support to technical services and mine operations. Oversight of blasthole sampling and ore control.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performing pit mapping and geologic mapping of blast hole cuttings and highwalls.
  • Responsible for maintaining production database.
  • Develop and maintain ore control procedures as needed.
  • Oversight on ore control designs to be surveyed and placed in the pit.
  • Work closely with Metallurgy to make sure material possesses leachable quality as crusher feed or run of mine material.
  • Interacts with mine operations and engineering personnel on mining areas daily.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or other related field. Required
  • 0 to 5 years of experience in Geology.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Program skills including experience using Microsoft Office, Vulcan, Arc GIS or other relevant software
  • Strong technical skills in a wide range of geology, engineering, and geotechnical concepts and principles
  • Excellent safety record is required.
  • Strong computer skills are required.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds preferred.
  • Ability to perform essential functions of the position is required. 

This position will be based at the Florida Canyon mine site near Winnemucca, Nevada.

Job: Mine Engineer – Integra

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Engineering Superintendent, the Mine Engineer is responsible for designing, planning, scheduling, and budgeting Mine Operations.  Plans and performs mining engineering duties related to development and production. Consults with other technical staff such as geologists and metallurgical engineers to determine best mining practices and set goals for the Mine Operations department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collects, documents, and assesses engineering data within the mine to improve efficiency.
  • Records and controls mine engineering related information to generate daily, weekly and monthly production reports;
  • Develops practical mining plans based on all available geological and equipment availability information to support intermediate and long-range planning and productive goals.
  • Produces mine designs using the appropriate models,  plans  equipment usage and provides a schedule for the mining of ore and waste.
  • Liaises and coordinate with the operations supervisor to ensure there is proper implementation of the plans.
  • Does waste dump and leach pad designs to follow the plan and provide information to all operating groups.
  • Recommends courses of action designed to eliminate potential production problems and to improve operational efficiency and control production costs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mine Engineering or related field or equivalent experience Required
  • Basic working knowledge of open pit mine engineering duties and requirements and open pit operations activities Required
  • 0-5 years’ experience in open pit engineering Preferred
  • Excellent safety record with ability to demonstrate safety leadership qualities Required

Scholarship: AIPG National Undergraduate Scholarship

Purpose
To assist students with college education costs and to promote student participation in the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). Up to ten scholarships will be awarded to declared undergraduate geological sciences majors who are at least sophomores. Details for applying for these scholarships are provided below.

Scholarship Awards
Scholarship awards in the amount of $1,000.00 – $3,000 each will be made to eligible students attending a college or university in the U.S. Scholarships are intended to be used to support tuition and/or room and board.

Eligibility Requirements
Any student who is majoring in geology (or earth science), is at least a sophomore, and is attending a two-year or four-year accredited college or university in the U.S. can apply (this includes international student members). Also, the student must be either a student member of AIPG or must have applied for student membership at the time the application for the scholarship is submitted.

Each student who is awarded a scholarship agrees, by accepting the scholarship, to prepare a 600 to 800 word article for publication in The Professional Geologist. The subject of the article must be related to a timely professional issue.

Application Process

  1. Submit a cover letter introducing yourself and tell us what you have done outside of the class room such as research projects, officer in club, or outside activities within the community. Address your career goals in near term and longer term. Provide your academic objectives: If you are attending a two-year institute do you plan to continue to a four-year institute and complete a degree? If you attend a four-year institute do you plan to attend graduate school?
  2. Submit a one page (800 words strictly enforced, 12 pt, times new roman, 1 inch margins, left justify and in a Word doc file) essay on Why I Want to be a Geologist. Scholarship winner’s essays will be printed unedited and in their entirety in the AIPG publication The Professional Geologist (TPG).
  3. Portrait of yourself for the purpose of printing in TPG with the scholarship winner’s essay.
  4. Submit a copy of your transcript (unofficial) and documentation that you are a current student. Requisite standards to apply are a minimum GPA of 2.8 (on a 4 point scale) and a minimum of 12 semester credits of geology/geoscience courses with a 3.0 GPA in these courses completed at time of application.
  5. Letter of recommendation from a geology/geoscience professor that provides an emphasis on your performance and activities in the classroom, in the department, and your character in how you work and help other students. Professor can email the the letter to aipg@aipg.org or upload the letter online at https://aipg.org/page/UndergradeRecLtr. Student needs to let their professor know to email or upload LOR.

One scholarship will be awarded to a declared graduate student in an accredited geoscience program in applied geosciences. Details for applying for this scholarship are provided below.

Scholarship award in the amount of $5,000.00 to an eligible graduate student attending a college or university in the U.S. Scholarships are intended to be used to support tuition, room and board, and/or research.

Eligibility Requirements
Any graduate student who is majoring in the geosciences in the U.S. can apply (this includes international student members).

The student who is awarded the scholarship agrees, by accepting the scholarship, to prepare a 600 to 800 word article for publication in The Professional Geologist. The subject of the article must be related to a timely professional issue.

Application Process

  2. Submit a one page (approximately 750 words) essay on a topic the AIPG Education Committee will decide on annually. The scholarship essay topic is:

    What will be the most important contribution that geology and geologists will make in the next quarter century?  Please address the place of competence, ethics, and integrity in your creative product.
     
    Scholarship winner’s essays will be printed unedited and in their entirety in the AIPG publication The Professional Geologist (TPG).
  3. Submit a copy of your transcript (unofficial) and documentation that you are a current student. Requisite standards to apply are a minimum GPA of 2.8 (on a 4 point scale) and a minimum of 12 semester credits of geology/geoscience courses with a 3.0 GPA in these courses completed at time of application. Those credits can come from previous grad or undergrad studies.
  4.
