Job Summary

Reporting to the Environmental Specialist, the Environmental Intern is responsible for supporting environmental monitoring, compliance, and field operations by assisting with sampling activities, data collection, and recordkeeping. Working under the guidance of experienced environmental professionals, the intern will gain hands-on experience in environmental fieldwork, GIS and GPS data collection, data management, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

Field Operations & Data Management

  • Field Sampling Assistance: Support environmental sampling field activities, including preparation, sample collection, and field observation under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Remote Site Access Support: Assist with maintaining trails and access routes to remote sampling locations to ensure safe and efficient fieldwork.

Spatial Data Collection & Technology

  • GIS & GPS Application: Utilize GIS & GPS tools to collect and record field data, contributing to accurate environmental monitoring and spatial analysis.

Environmental Compliance & Monitoring

  • Compliance Support: Assist with environmental compliance monitoring events and support accurate recordkeeping in accordance with regulatory and site requirements.

Data Management & Reporting

  • Data Entry & Analysis Support: Perform data entry, basic data validation, and organization of environmental datasets using spreadsheets to support reporting and analysis.

Other Duties

  • Flexible Support: Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned to meet operational needs.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in college pursuing a degree in environmental, chemical, or civil engineering; an earth sciences discipline (chemistry, biology, geology, natural resources); or a related scientific degree.
  • Must be a motivated, self-starter, with the ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Capable of working indoors and outdoors, safely maneuvering conditions such as open water, inclement weather, insects, and wildlife, and hazards such as mobile equipment.
  • Acceptable driving record with a valid driver’s license.

Skills and Abilities

  • Requires strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with a capability to communicate complex ideas to all levels and partners.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Ability to take initiative in proactively completing job duties.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Geotechnical Engineering Manager, the Geotechnical Engineering Intern is responsible for assisting with geotechnical investigations, field sampling, data analysis, and report preparation to support tailings related geotechnical engineering projects while gaining hands-on experience with site assessments and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

Geotechnical Assessments & Analysis

  • Tailings Management: Perform dam safety inspections and assist with GISTM documentation and implementation to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Hydrological & Mass Balance Analysis: Perform water and mass balance analyses to support legacy and future tailings projects.
  • Technical Design Support: Assist the Geotechnical Engineering Manager with various design projects, contributing technical expertise to engineering plans.

Field Operations & Data Management

  • Site Monitoring: Track and interpret geotechnical instrumentation, weather data, ground movement, and piezometric data to manage critical risks.
  • Drilling & Mapping: Assist with geotechnical drilling observations, conduct site mapping, and perform sampling activities to characterize subsurface conditions.
  • Instrumentation Maintenance: Ensure the integrity of monitoring systems through regular maintenance, data centralization, and document control.
  • Survey Integration: Conduct survey data collection and implementation to maintain accurate spatial records of site conditions.

Innovation & Safety Administration

  • Process Improvement: Evaluate innovative technologies and ideas to enhance operational efficiency and business practices.
  • Risk Management: Maintain rigorous standards for critical geotechnical risk management, ensuring all activities align with safety protocols.
  • Operational Reporting: Manage departmental logs and data tracking to support long-term site stability and reporting requirements.

  • Must be working towards an Undergraduate degree in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering, or similar, on a full-time basis.
  • Must be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate level.
  • Must be a motivated self-starter, with the ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Must be comfortable working in a dynamic work environment with a willingness to work outdoors and able to operate vehicles at our operations, in various weather conditions and terrain.
  • Acceptable driving record with a valid driver’s license.
