Inspection and communication of pit and dump inspection results
Clear and concise communication of geotechnical information to site personnel
Proactive improvement of processes related to slope monitoring and slope design
Understand use of surface stability and geologic modeling software programs
Understanding of 3-D geologic model inputs and development, and impacts on slope stability
Must be able to work in a team environment
Ability to work safely and recognize hazards
Other duties as assigned
Qalifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Geological Engineering or related field preferred
0 – 3 years hands-on geotechnical experience at an active open pit mine site preferred
Knowledge of open pit mining principles

Qualifications:

The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) facilitates global research collaboration studying Earth’s history as recorded in ocean floor sediments and rocks beneath the ocean floor. With numerous seagoing expeditions aboard the scientific drillship JOIDES Resolution (JR), and on behalf of the National Science Foundation (NSF), researchers have gathered core samples from around the world. Following the demobilization of the JR this past summer, Texas A&M University was tasked by the NSF with setting up an instrumented Gulf Coast Repository (GCR), utilizing instrumentation removed from the JR. The GCR laboratories are expected to be operational by Spring 2025, offering curatorial services and advanced capabilities to describe and analyze both legacy and future core samples.

What We Want

We are seeking a GCR Technician to support Gulf Coast Repository Analytical Services under the supervision of the GCR Analytical Services Supervisor and the general direction of the GCR Senior Technicians. This role involves operating, maintaining, and calibrating laboratory and analytical equipment, processing samples, training visiting scientists, and participating in projects to develop and enhance analytical instruments, techniques, and software. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Earth Science or a relevant field, four years of professional laboratory experience, and the ability to obtain and hold a passport and travel visas. Required skills include excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, the capacity to work independently and as part of a team, multitasking, and strong organizational skills. Preferred qualifications include operational knowledge of geologic laboratory facilities, mechanical or electronics skills, experience with databases, scientific software, computer-aided design, and scientific ocean drilling. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate documentation, promoting safe laboratory practices, assisting with large projects, and providing data processing and QA/QC support. What You Need To Know

Other Requirements and Factors: This position may be required to sail, which is conditional based on TAMU successfully obtaining the Scientific Ocean Drilling Coordinating Office (SODCO). Responsibilities

  • GCR ANALYTICAL SERVICES– Responsible for instrument operation, maintenance, calibration for laboratory and analytical equipment in assigned laboratory area (paleomagnetics/petrophysics/chemistry/X-ray). Cooperate and work closely with scientists to optimize scientific data produced on GCR analytical equipment. Cross train on instrumentation in other laboratory areas of the GCR analytical facilities. Control inventory and maintain supplies for assigned laboratory area. Maintain accurate documentation, including laboratory manuals and vendor documentation for instrumentation and equipment in assigned laboratory area. Assist in keeping all GCR facilities and assigned laboratory area clean and in good working condition. Practice and promote safe laboratory practices at all times. Assist in implementation of large projects utilizing GCR instrumentation and the GCR’s core collection, including legacy projects and workshops, along with SODCO or any coring/drilling projects that want to utilize GCR analytical facilities. Assist in splitting and curating cores as required for core processing projects at the GCR. Box, move, and store cores in the GCR, as needed. Provides basic data processing and QA/QC of data generated by GCR instrumentation in assigned laboratory area and assist with transfer of generated data to facility users, with support from the Senior Technicians and Senior Data Analyst as required. Work on projects related to instrument and software development/enhancement.
  • TRAINING AND OVERSIGHT– Provide training and oversight for visiting scientists using instrumentation in assigned laboratory areas. Ensure visiting scientists receive safe laboratory safety training and follow safe laboratory practices. Provide cross training to other GCR technical staff in areas of expertise.
  • SAMPLE ANALYSES- Run samples on GCR instrumentation for academic and commercial scientists, as required.

POSITION SUMMARY

As our Mine Engineer, you will perform daily engineering functions and special projects in an underground hard rock mining operation to keep our production going and our profitability up. You’ll start every day organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing work activities to ensure timely completion of projects, programs, and objectives. You will be called upon to coordinate with geology, survey, and the mine operations group. To thrive in this role, you will use mine costing and financial analysis techniques to explain variances, evaluate projects and prioritize allocation of resources. We’re on a remote island, you must know how to work independently, identify, and resolve problems in a timely manner.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Staff Level Geotechnical Engineers for our Mining Design & Technical Services group based in Denver, Colorado. This entry-level position would support ongoing mining services for tailings and heap leach projects within the USA as well as in international locations. The selected candidate would become part of a small geotechnical technical services group and support project-related work. Additional professional experiences and project support would include geotechnical site assessments and associated field services, development of soil and foundation recommendations for surface infrastructure, dam breach evaluations, and stability and deformation analyses, among other work. The position is meant to be dynamic, working across multiple design teams (civil, hydrogeological, etc.) and a variety of tasks. The professional development of the successful candidate will be promoted with the goal of transitioning additional responsibilities to the candidate in the future.

  Position Responsibilities

· Support ongoing EOR services for tailings and heap leach projects within the USA as well as international locations. 

· Report directly to an existing EOR and quickly become integrated into future design work, as well as systematic monitoring and surveillance activities. 

· Complete geotechnical site assessments and associated field services for the development of mining infrastructure.

· Support initial and ongoing material characterization activities, including gathering field data, designing and overseeing laboratory programs, interpreting laboratory data, and developing appropriate constitutive models.

· Perform stability and deformation analyses for the mining infrastructure, including tailings storage facilities and heap leach pads.

· Develop soil and foundation recommendations for surface infrastructure.

· Assist with tailings dam breach evaluations.

· Work with and provide training to junior engineers. 

· Assist with generating design drawings using Autodesk Civil 3D. 

Requirements:

· Education: Master of Science (preferred); Bachelor of Science (considered). Civil Engineering degrees from ABET-accredited universities are preferred. Alternative degrees (e.g., Geologic Engineering, Mining Engineering) will be considered based on relevant coursework.

· Professional Experience: 0+ for Entry-Level.

· Computer Software: Significant experience with MS Office Suite. Some experience using standard geotechnical design software (Rocscience, GeoStudios, etc.); numerical modeling experience is advantageous; and basic understanding of Autodesk Civil 3D.

· Geotechnical Laboratory: Proficient with standard material testing and index tests. 

· Required Registrations / Professional Development: Successful completion of FE Exam.

· Travel: Must have the ability to travel in the U.S. and internationally to support field programs.

· Physical Demands: The position may require sitting for extended periods of time, extended hours working on a computer, and lifting up to 30 pounds. Field assignments are located in a variety of climactic conditions and may require standing, squatting, bending, the use of machinery, and a variety of standard geotechnical tools.

· Technical writing: Proficiency in technical writing is expected.

This position processes routine (e.g., in less complex geological settings and in watersheds with available streamflow) site-specific review (SSR) requests for proposed large quantity withdrawals (LQW) of surface water and groundwater received under Part 327, Great Lakes Preservation, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended.  This position interprets available geologic and hydrogeologic information to determine whether proposed LQWs are likely to cause adverse resource impacts (ARI) to nearby rivers and streams.  This position creates geological cross-sections and creates and calibrates two-dimensional (2-D) groundwater models in support of SSR requests or other additional data collection efforts to characterize glacial and bedrock geology and surface water/groundwater interactions in response to LQWs.  This position conducts compliance reviews for water management areas (WMA) affected by SSR requests.  The SSR compliance reviews compare existing LQW registrations, well logs, and annual water use records to verify that existing LQWs are following Part 327 and to determine the current cumulative stream flow depletion status of the affected WMAs.  This position assists other Water Use Assessment Unit (WUAU) staff in collecting miscellaneous stream flow measurements.

This position collaborates with a team of experienced engineers at EGLE to resolve complex issues. The surface water engineer is involved with performing sanitary surveys, surveillance visits, and reviewing plans, specifications, and permit applications for noncommunity water supplies which have treatment plants subject to the Surface Water Treatment Rules. The noncommunity surface water treatment engineer also has responsibility for reviewing monthly operation reports and assisting water supplies subject to the Surface Water Treatment Rules.
