Role description:
Arcadis is seeking a highly motivated Mining Geotechnical Engineer, with strong written and verbal skills, to join our established and growing multi-national Mining Engineering Team. In this role, you will provide technical support for mining-related projects across the United States (US), Canada, Chile, and other global locations while helping to support business development initiatives. This position can report to any of our U.S. offices and offers flexibility through remote or hybrid work arrangements.
As a Mining Geotechnical Engineer, you will sit within the Mining Engineering Team, contributing to innovative technical solutions and high-quality engineering designs. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Arcadis’ Resilience GBA (Global Business Area), focusing on sustainable mining solutions that drive environmental and operational improvements.
Role accountabilities:
- Working as a key participant in our Mining Sector Team, providing technical leadership and contributing to critical projects.
- Applying geotechnical engineering principles to develop effective solutions for surface mining projects, including tailings facilities, open pits, and mine reclamation efforts.
- Performing geotechnical engineering reviews and providing strategic input on large-scale, complex projects across the US and internationally.
- Mentoring and developing mid-level and junior staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
- Supporting business development by identifying and pursuing growth opportunities with existing and new clients.
- Acting as or becoming the Engineer of Record on appropriate projects, ensuring technical excellence and compliance.
This role provides a dynamic mix of feasibility studies, design, construction quality assurance, and client engagement, providing opportunities for professional growth and leadership within the mining sector. Additionally, this position may involve up to 25% travel to client sites and meetings, both within North America. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Qualifications & Experience:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of geotechnical engineering experience.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a closely related field.
- OSHA HAZWOPER, MSHA training certification, and Professional engineer (PE) license.
- Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D, ArcGIS Pro, and geotechnical modeling software (e.g., GeoStudio, FLAC, PLAXIS).
- Expertise in mine slope stability analysis, tailings dam design, and soft-ground mechanics.

POSITION DUTY STATEMENT
ENGINEERING GEOLOGIST DUTY
The Engineering Geologist reports directly to and receives most assignments from the Senior Engineering Geologist; however, direction and assignments may also come from the CSMIP Project Managers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PERCENT DESCRIPTION
25% Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting studies in engineering seismology to develop
scientific methods applicable to the CSMIP seismological software. Develop and maintain
seismological and data exchange applications to facilitate the processing and dissemination
of strong-motion data coming from CSMIP triggered and real-time systems and the California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN) partner seismic networks. Assist in integrating
seismological software developed by CSMIP’s partners to the Strong-motion Automated
Recovery and Analysis (SARA) system in coordination with the CSMIP staff and the software developers. Assist in planning and organizing efforts aimed at the development and modernization of the seismological tools and strong-motion data exchange applications used by the SARA system.
25% Contribute to new developments of functions to improve CSMIP’s Strong-motion data
acquisition system which includes the dissemination and archival of the resulting collected
data; analyze strong-motion data streams to determine location and magnitude of
earthquakes in California. Assist in planning and developing a procedure to compare and
evaluate strong-motion data streamed via CSMIP’s Earthworm real-time system. Assist in
evaluating the performance of CSMIP’s real-time system and propose adjustments to
seismological parameters in the Earthworm system as needed. Assist in the ongoing efforts
by California Earthquake Early Warning systems to improve the rapid detection of
earthquakes and the prediction of corresponding ground shaking levels.
20% Conduct seismological research studies by utilizing ground response strong motion data, seismological and geological information in computer programs to identify factors controlling local variations of earthquake ground shaking. Review and analyze peer-reviewed research publications and technical reports to keep up with latest developments in seismology. Prepare proposals and technical reports of research results for journal publications and give presentations at scientific meetings and workshops.
10% Prepare and update reports of significant earthquake activity to provide the department’s management and emergency responders with quick summary and visual materials showing the earthquake impact. Assist in the review of the periodic data interpretation and geotechnical reports and prepare evaluation reports for project managers.
10% Participate in CSMIP’s earthquake response activities to prepare and disseminate strongmotion data collected from CSMIP’s and CISN’s seismic stations in a timely manner. The work includes review, comparison, and evaluation of earthquake strong-motion data in
accordance with CSMIP’s data dissemination policies and procedures.

PERCENT DESCRIPTION
5% Backup the Senior Engineering Geologist of Data Products unit to review and quality control data products. Participate in outreach activities and presentations of technical information about the engineering geology products and strong-motion data to the engineering and scientific community.
5% Perform administrative duties including, but not limited to; adheres to department policies, rules, and procedures; submits administrative requests including leave, overtime, travel, and training in a timely and appropriate manner; accurately reports time in the daily log system; and submits timesheets by the due date.

Project Goals
- Surpac to Leapfrog Data Migration: The primary objective is to assist in the migration of geological data from Surpac to Leapfrog. This includes transferring drillhole data, block models, and other relevant geological surfaces, ensuring data integrity and accuracy throughout the process.
- Middle Georgia Data Visualization: The intern will contribute to a data visualization project focused on a key site in Middle Georgia. This will involve gathering, processing, and visualizing geospatial data to create maps and other visual aids that support project analysis and communication. The intern will use a combination of GIS software and data visualization tools to highlight important geographical and geological features of the area.
- GIS Fundamentals and Site Mapping: The intern will learn and apply GIS basics to create and update site maps. This will involve using tools to represent geological features, infrastructure, and other key site components, providing a visual understanding of the project area.
- QGIS Workshop and Application: The intern will attend a QGIS workshop to learn how to use this powerful open-source GIS software.
- Resource and Reserve Data Organization: The intern will assist in organizing and standardizing resource and reserve data. This will involve working with large datasets to ensure they are consistent, well-documented, and ready for use in geological modeling and reporting.

Mine Engineer is responsible for long-term mine planning, assisting in developing metal plans, and providing technical guidance/support for the Mine Department and other Departments as required.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:

- Assist in the creation, refinement, and implementation of the long term mine plan (material sequence; access planning; pit design; shot muck inventory; blast design and planning; dump sequencing) to attain the Life of Mine Plan.
