Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science or Master of Science Degree in environmental science, geology or hydrogeology, or similar.
  • For recent college graduates, an internship or cooperative education experience with an environmental consulting firm is preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication and writing skills, with an ability to work in a fast-paced environment managing multiple deadlines for multiple Project Managers.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.) is mandatory. Fluency with Python, gINT, OpenGround, MATLAB, AQTESOLV and/or ArcGIS or other environmental or engineering-related software applications is preferred but not required.
  • Must possess solid technical and problem-solving skills and must be willing to accept short- and long-term field assignments, with some overnight travel expected.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and capable of lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Candidates possessing a 40-hour HAZWOPER health and safety training certificate or an up-to-date 8-hr annual refresher course certification are preferred. Candidates without current certification or without prior 40-hr training will be required to attend (and receive certification) immediately upon hire.

Position Overview

As a member of the aggregate production team, this position will be responsible for monitoring aggregate production and planning, including surveying, developing extraction methods for overseeing the drilling and blasting contractors.

  • Assists in applying CRH blasting fundamentals for blast design and work with on site contractors for drilling and blasting operations.
  • Assists in determining long-range planning designs and data to determine proof of financial justification.
  • Will work with the team to ensure company compliance with mandated safety and environmental policies on all mining/material production practices.
  • Will work with company management and State and Federal agencies to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ability to detect safety hazards and respond accordingly.

ENGINEERING GEOLOGIST DUTY
The Engineering Geologist reports directly to and receives most assignments from the Senior Engineering Geologist; however, direction and assignments may also come from the CSMIP Project Managers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PERCENT DESCRIPTION
25% Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting studies in engineering seismology to develop
scientific methods applicable to the CSMIP seismological software. Develop and maintain
seismological and data exchange applications to facilitate the processing and dissemination
of strong-motion data coming from CSMIP triggered and real-time systems and the California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN) partner seismic networks. Assist in integrating
seismological software developed by CSMIP’s partners to the Strong-motion Automated
Recovery and Analysis (SARA) system in coordination with the CSMIP staff and the software developers. Assist in planning and organizing efforts aimed at the development and modernization of the seismological tools and strong-motion data exchange applications used by the SARA system.


25% Contribute to new developments of functions to improve CSMIP’s Strong-motion data
acquisition system which includes the dissemination and archival of the resulting collected
data; analyze strong-motion data streams to determine location and magnitude of

evaluate strong-motion data streamed via CSMIP’s Earthworm real-time system. Assist in

Review and analyze peer-reviewed research publications and technical reports to keep up with latest developments in seismology. Prepare proposals and technical reports of research results for journal publications and give presentations at scientific meetings and workshops.


10% Prepare and update reports of significant earthquake activity to provide the department’s management and emergency responders with quick summary and visual materials showing the earthquake impact. Assist in the review of the periodic data interpretation and geotechnical reports and prepare evaluation reports for project managers.


10% Participate in CSMIP’s earthquake response activities to prepare and disseminate strongmotion data collected from CSMIP’s and CISN’s seismic stations in a timely manner. The work includes review, comparison, and evaluation of earthquake strong-motion data in
accordance with CSMIP’s data dissemination policies and procedures.
