Job Summary

Project Goals

  • Surpac to Leapfrog Data Migration: The primary objective is to assist in the migration of geological data from Surpac to Leapfrog. This includes transferring drillhole data, block models, and other relevant geological surfaces, ensuring data integrity and accuracy throughout the process.
  • Middle Georgia Data Visualization: The intern will contribute to a data visualization project focused on a key site in Middle Georgia. This will involve gathering, processing, and visualizing geospatial data to create maps and other visual aids that support project analysis and communication. The intern will use a combination of GIS software and data visualization tools to highlight important geographical and geological features of the area.
  • GIS Fundamentals and Site Mapping: The intern will learn and apply GIS basics to create and update site maps. This will involve using tools to represent geological features, infrastructure, and other key site components, providing a visual understanding of the project area.
  • QGIS Workshop and Application: The intern will attend a QGIS workshop to learn how to use this powerful open-source GIS software.
  • Resource and Reserve Data Organization: The intern will assist in organizing and standardizing resource and reserve data. This will involve working with large datasets to ensure they are consistent, well-documented, and ready for use in geological modeling and reporting.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this internship, the student will have a solid understanding of:

  • The practical application of Surpac and Leapfrog in a professional environment.
  • The principles and practices of data migration and quality control.
  • The use of GIS for data visualization, specifically on a Middle Georgia project.
  • Fundamental GIS concepts and their use in creating professional site maps.
  • The use of open-source GIS software like QGIS.
  • Best practices for organizing and managing geological and resource data.

Position Overview:

Talon Metals Corp is seeking a Contract Core Logging Geologist to support the Exploration Project in Baraga County, Michigan. Working closely with the full geoscience team, the contractor will be responsible for detailed core logging as part of ongoing drilling programs and resource expansion efforts.

The ideal candidate should possess a willingness and an ability to consistently work in a safe manner, adhere to existing safe work procedures and policies, and exhibit safe working habits and values to colleagues and contractors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare drill core for logging – wash and orient core, mark depths, and record RQD
  • Conduct detailed geotechnical logging and record structural features
  • Log lithological, mineralogical, and alteration characteristics
  • Assist with data interpretation and occasional 3D modeling in Leapfrog
  • Select, cut, package, and ship core samples for geochemical analysis
  • Assay QA/QC and contribute to assay result modeling
  • Support fieldwork efforts, including prospecting and geophysics surveys
  • Perform additional tasks as required to support exploration efforts

What you will need for this role:

  • B.Sc. in Geology or related field
  • 0–5 years’ relevant experience in exploration/mining; prior core logging experience preferred
  • Able to lift and carry 50lbs
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Strong team collaboration skills, with ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication and safety focused mindset

Compensation & Logistics:

  • 6-month, fixed term contract, with possibility of extension based on project needs and performance

What You’ll Do

As a Mining Geologist, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the success of our mining operations through hands-on geological assessments, strategic planning, and operational excellence. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Guide Mining Operations: Conduct face mapping and grade control sampling to steer efficient resource extraction.
  • Optimize Resources: Perform monthly volume and quality reconciliations to maximize ore recovery.
  • Support Drilling Programs: Assist with planning and overseeing core drilling operations, including detailed core logging.
  • Update Geological Models: Collaborate with the Division Geologist to integrate new drilling and testing data into block models.
  • Survey and Plan: Conduct surveys and calculate ore volumes to support mine planning and operations.
  • Contribute to Mine Planning: Partner with the Senior Mine Engineer to develop short- and long-term mine plans.
  • Ensure Compliance: Assist with MSHA quarry inspections and maintain accurate records for compliance and operational tracking.
  • Drive Innovation: Evaluate and implement new technologies and methods for geological assessments and surveying.
  • Lead and Collaborate: Work closely with external consultants, provide leadership to hourly workforce as needed, and support operational and project management tasks.
  • Step Up When Needed: Occasionally manage day-to-day mining operations, including weekend rotations, in the absence of the Mine Supervisor.
  • Support Capital Projects: Assist with CapEx requests and project implementation to enhance operations.

Who You Are

We’re looking for a proactive, detail-oriented professional with a passion for geology and a drive to improve mining processes. You bring:

  • Self-Starter Mindset: Ability to independently lead projects from concept to completion.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency in geological mapping, sampling, and core logging techniques.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities and experience with Microsoft Excel and mining software (e.g., ArcPro, AutoCAD, Leapfrog, Surpac, or Deswik preferred).
  • Leadership and Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships and champion a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, oversee contractors, and track key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a dynamic surface mine environment and driving operational efficiency.
  • Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related field.
    • Internship or at least 1 year of experience in a related industry/company.
    • Experience with core drilling/logging and Surface MSHA certification are a plus.
