Are you our next Geotechnical Engineer?

The Engineer I/II/III is responsible for providing civil/geotechnical support to Operations and Environmental Departments on all aspects of gypsum disposal operations, dike construction and maintenance, inspections, and process pond water management. Responsible for the direct management of gypsum stack construction and closure engineering activities. 

What you’ll do:

  • Provide technical support for day-to-day activities and on all aspects of the gypsum stack system including disposal activities and pond water management.
  • Review and provide technical consultations to Operations on dike construction and overall gypsum stack management.  Foresee and anticipate issues in a timely manner and make recommendations.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining short-term and long-term gypsum disposal plans in support of operational decisions and capital planning.   
  • Coordinate periodic surveying and testing programs to track progress and measure gypsum and water inventories.  Report issues and recommendations to upper management and ensure solutions are implemented in a timely manner
  • Participate in the front end design of gypsum stack expansion and closure projects.  With closure projects could also be responsible for the project management including construction and project controls.
  • Ensure compliance with Florida Gypsum Management Rules 62-672 & 62-673, applicable Federal Rules and Consent Decree requirements on all aspects of gypsum stack operations
  • Work closely with staff from Operations and Environmental Department to ensure permit requirements, ground water monitoring plans, and any gypsum stack system related permitting processes are in compliance
  • Work closely with Water Balance Engineer on water balance projections, gypsum stack growth model, and calibrations
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties and/or civil related projects as assigned and/or schedule allows

What you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with a major in Civil, Environmental, Mining or related engineering discipline required
  • Surface mining or heavy construction experience with exposure to environmental and safety compliance and stormwater management elements. Demonstrated engineering and design experience.
  • Microsoft Office experience required.  Emphasis on Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills.  
  • Applicable plant operations software experience
  • PE License a plus

Engineer II

  • 2+ years manufacturing industry experience working in an Engineering and/or Operations related role required. 

Engineer III

  • 4+ years manufacturing industry experience working in an Engineering and/or Operations related role required.

SUMMARY

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the development of constitutive relationships for numerical modeling.
  • Conduct liquefaction assessments using site-specific geotechnical and seismic data.
  • Assist with dam breach analyses and risk assessments.
  • Evaluate Bearing Capacity and Settlement: Perform and review analyses of bearing capacity and settlement for various mining infrastructure components.
  • Design and Monitor Instrumentation Programs: Develop instrumentation installation plans and systematically review and interpret instrumentation data to support project performance monitoring.
  • Prepare High-Quality Deliverables: Author and review technical reports, calculation packages, engineering design documents, technical specifications, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support Construction Documentation: Assist in the preparation and review of construction drawing sets and technical specifications.
  • Project Management: Develop and implement project management plans, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget.
  • Proposal Development: Assist with the preparation of proposals and scopes of work for mining-related design projects.
  • Regulatory and Standards Compliance: Stay current with relevant regulations, standards, and industry best practices, such as the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).

Qualifications:

  • Computer Software: Significant experience with MS Office Suite. Proficiency using

  • Assist with performing basic professional geotechnical engineering work relating to proposed and existing site conditions, including subsurface investigations, soil foundation engineering, settlement analysis, soil erosion, lateral earth pressures, geological hazards, underground water, and slope stability for commercial, industrial, building, environmental, infrastructure, and transportation projects.
  • Perform routine geotechnical engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements, operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, systems, and infrastructure. 
  • Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site and providing basic technical assistance on various environmental, design, and construction issues involving rock and soil mechanics, and investigating subsurface and geological conditions to design and build foundations, earth structures, and pavement sub-grades. 
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site notebook/logs.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • This position will involve a mix of office and field work.  The position requires overnight travel and fieldwork as dictated by project demands.
  • Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, soil/water/sludge/rock samples, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.    
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, or other engineering design software’s).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Willingness to work on projects across business sectors, performing a variety of tasks, sometimes on short notice. 
  • Travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements. Travel methods may include boat, small aircrafts, helicopters, snow machines, 4-wheelers, etc.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or closely related discipline 
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
  • Familiarity with permafrost engineering protocols. 
  • Enthusiasm for engagement with field teams. 
  • A client-centric mindset and desire to work within a larger team focused on timely, high-quality service delivery.

General Responsibilities:
This position will conduct field and laboratory testing of concrete, soil, asphalt, and aggregates.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
• Performs sampling or testing as directed.
• Provides assistance to other field and/or laboratory personnel
• Transports equipment, specimens or documents to field personnel, laboratory, clients or other offices, and provides physical assistance in equipment set-up.
• Cleans equipment, vehicles and work areas

Requirements:
High school diploma and BS degree in progress in a science or related field (environmental, safety, engineering, chemistry, biology, geology). The ideal candidate will have less than one year remaining to complete their BS degree.
