Breaking Digital Barriers to Present an Online Seminar

Michigan Tech’s Breaking Digital Barriers Group to present an Online Seminar for People Who Help Older Adults Use Technology.

The one-week online seminar, Digital Literacy and the Older Adults, is for anybody who:

  • helps older adults use technology,
  • wants to help people in their community cope with the rapid change in technology that has become part of our everyday life, and
  • or anyone who has ever tried to debug their parents’ computer problems over the phone.

The seminar will run Nov. 18 to 22, with a time commitment of 1-2 hours a day.

The seminar will take place online.  Registration is at www.mtu.edu/bdbmooc.  

Flu Vaccine Clinic Held On Campus – Nov 7, 2013

Portage Health will hold a flu vaccine clinic in the Peninsula Room in the MUB, Thursday, November 7th, 4 to 7 pm.

Employees, retirees and their dependents, as well as students, are welcome to attend one of the clinics. Shots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis; no appointment is necessary.

Employees and retirees with Michigan Tech’s Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance and students with Aetna student health should bring their member card so the vaccine can be billed to insurance. Without insurance, the vaccine is $25 (payable by cash, check or credit card). Identification is required and anyone under the age of 18 cannot be vaccinated without parental permission.

Be prepared to provide a picture ID and insurance card to have the vaccine administered and billed to insurance. A spouse or child may attend without the employee.

Peace Corps Information Session at Michigan Tech

Peace Corps Recruiter Brett Heimann will conduct an information session on Peace Corps overseas service at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23, in MUB Alumni Lounge A.

He will be joined by Scott Hillard, Michigan Tech Peace Corps Master’s International recruiter, who will also talk about how to serve in Peace Corps and complete a master’s degree at the same time.

New Module: Incorporating Information Literacy into Instruction

The Van Pelt and Opie Library and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) invite faculty and graduate students to attend a module, Incorporating Information Literacy into Instruction, consisting of three one-hour sequential workshops.

Instruction and Learning Librarian Sarah Lucchesi is delivering the module through theCTL’s University Teaching and Learning (UTL) Seminars program.  In this module, using the framework of Michigan Tech information literacy rubric for undergraduate students (learning goal #6), we will explore the library’s information resources, digital tools for keeping current in a field of study and assignment elements that allow students to practice information literacy skills.

Faculty and graduate students are welcome to register only for this three-workshop series, or as a part of the complete UTL Course Design program.  The workshop sessions are:

  • Monday, Nov. 4th, 11th and 18th
  • 11 a.m. to noon in Library 242

SmartZone holding open house and tour

All great ideas start someplace!  The SmartZone is holding a special open house and tour for Graduate Students and Dual Career clients and you’re invited to come, network and learn more.

The SmartZone offers coaching, tools and mentoring to help you build a thought into an idea, and into a model, then into business and beyond.  This special event is designed to help you see new opportunities for your knowledge and skills.  You will meet others who have nurtured an idea into a business and other success stories.  This is a great platform to get you thinking in a new direction.

Health Fair on Campus Wednesday Oct 16

The annual health fair, open to faculty, staff and students, will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom.

Complimentary screenings for total cholesterol, blood glucose, bone density and body fat will be offered in addition to free massages, healthy food and fun giveaways.  Attendees may register to win a kayak.

GRE – Offered on Michigan Tech’s Campus

ETS (GRE) has agreed to offer a paper-based GRE® revised General Test on Michigan Tech’s campus.  This is a one-time event.  We hope to expand offerings in the future.  The GRE® revised General Test is scheduled for February 8, 2014.
