Nominations sought for 2014 MAGS Thesis Award

The Executive Committee of the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) is soliciting nominations for the 2014 MAGS Distinguished Master’s Thesis Awards to recognize and reward distinguished scholarship and research at the master’s level.  Michigan Tech may nominate one candidate in each disciplinary category.

Eligible students

  • will have earned a master of science degree between July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013 in the field of Biological Sciences or Humanities
    • Michigan Tech may nominate one thesis in each category
    • The 2015 competition will seek nominees in the fields of Social Sciences, and Physical Sciences and Engineering
  • will have completed an original thesis that makes an unusually significant contribution to the discipline
  • will not have earned a PhD (or comparable research degree) in any discipline prior to the writing of the master’s thesis

Seminar: Submitting your Dissertation, Thesis, or Report

Students planning on finishing a dissertation, thesis, or report in fall 2013 or spring 2014 are invited a seminar designed to help students understand the submission process and answer questions about it. Faculty and staff who assist students with submissions are also welcome to attend.

Once you register, you will receive a confirmation with the location and a reminder of the date and time.

If you are unable to join us, this seminar will be taped and available online after the event.

Significant changes were introduced in fall 2013 based on revisions approved by the University Senate.  Join us to learn about the changes and have your questions answered.

GSG’s first Lunch and Learn – Community Safety

GSG’s first Lunch and Learn of the year will be held on Monday, September 9th. It will feature a presentation on community safety for graduate students given by Reid DeVoge from Public Safety.  The presentation will include information on safety considerations, what to do in case of an emergency, and the residential officer program at Michigan Tech.  This Lunch-n-Learn is highly encouraged for graduate students new to the Houghton area or anyone who wants to learn more about community safety.

Help the Red Cross with Emergencies, Donate Blood.

September is National Preparedness Month, and the American Red Cross asks eligible donors to help prepare for emergencies by giving blood.

National Preparedness Month is designed to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, workplaces and communities. The mission of the Red Cross is to help the public prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. One way you can support the mission is to become a regular blood donor.

First Friday University Social Sept. 6

First Friday Socials are getting under way again for 2013-2014. Faculty, staff and graduate students are invited to attend this year’s opener from 4 to 6 p.m., Sept. 6, at the Pat Nelson Graduate Conference Center on the 4th floor of the Administration Building.

The Graduate School and Graduate Student Government are once again sponsoring this month’s event. Last year’s was a huge success, so don’t miss out. Come and mingle with your colleagues and see the conference center and GSG offices. Along with the Graduate School and GSG, the conference center was funded by a donation from the late Patricia Nelson, wife of Michigan Tech Chemical Engineering graduate Charles J. Nelson (’36, deceased).

Complementary soda, beer and wine will be served along with some great appetizers.

Registration Open for Fall 2013 Safe Place Training

The Michigan Tech Safe Place Program is a comprehensive resource to better prepare faculty and staff to address the needs of students who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (GLBTQ). The training program addresses a wide range of terms that GLBTQ students use to define their identities, issues that GLBTQ students often deal with during the coming out process, concerns that GLBTQ students face both in and out of the classroom, ways that faculty and staff can create inclusive classroom and office environments, where faculty and staff can refer students who need to report harassment and the on- and off-campus resources available to students.

All faculty and staff members are invited to participate in the program. The fall 2013 training times and the online registration form are available online.

ORAU Presentation August 20

Steve Roberts, university partnership specialist from Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), will give a presentation, “Value through Partnerships,” Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 2:30 p.m. in GLRC 202.

ORAU is a consortium leveraging the scientific strength of 105 major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering with national laboratories, government agencies, and private industry.

Michigan Tech has participated in ORAU-administered programs such as the Powe Junior Faculty Award, DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship, ORNL Postdoctoral Research Associates, and the NETL, DOE and EPA Research Participation Programs.

Superior: Best Known Practices Tuesday

Information Technology Services will be offering an hour-long training session–11 a.m., Tuesday, July 16, in EERC B45, to help researchers, faculty, post doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students–get the best out of Superior, Michigan Tech’s newest high-performance computing cluster.

Owing to limited seating, RSVP (to g@mtu.edu) is required. A listing of subsequent training sessions is available online.

Little Huskies Scholarship Available

Little Huskies Child Development Center has scholarships available to preschool age families through the Access to High Quality Early Childhood Education Scholarship Fund.

The purpose of the scholarship fund is to remove financial roadblocks so as to allow Michigan Tech’s most needy families access to high-quality early childhood education at Michigan Tech’s Little Huskies Child Development Center. The focus demographics are undergraduate, graduate, and low-income employee families. Their success at Michigan Tech is a guiding principle. A completed application and all required materials must be submitted and received no later than August 1, 2013 for the 2013-2014 academic year. Summer Seminar Series Announced

The Graduate School is pleased to announce its Summer 2013 Professional Development Seminar Series.  Both seminars will be available on campus and online – streaming live and taped for viewing later.  Join us for one or both seminars, designed to help writers of dissertations, theses, and reports and the staff who assist them.

  • June 18 | An Office Full of Tips | 11am -noon
    Learn how to use Microsoft Office to automate many of the common tasks a writer must do, such as caption figures and tables, format text consistently and place page numbers correctly. Debra Charlesworth, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School will show you tips and tricks that will help you focus on your writing instead of your formatting.
  • July 24 | Copyright for Your Thesis or Dissertation | 11am -noon
    Who holds the copyright on your thesis?  Can you put part of journal article in your dissertation?  What if you wrote the article?  Nora Allred, Copyright Librarian from the J.R. Van Pelt and Opie Library will present the basics of U.S. Copyright and discuss the role it plays in writing and publishing a thesis or dissertation.

Please register online to attend either or both seminars on campus or online.  Once you register, you will receive an e-mail confirmation with the location or technical information needed to view the streaming video.
