Record Enrollment for Spring 2010

The final preliminary spring 2010 enrollment numbers are out and the Graduate School is pleased to announce that  Michigan Tech has a record enrollment of graduate students.

Total graduate headcount is 1189 which is an increase of 212 or 21.7% over the spring 2009 numbers.

Total graduate student credit hours are 8162.5 which is an increase of 1411.0 or 20.9% over the Spring 2009 numbers.

Total 1st time master’s students are 71 which is an increase of 21 or 42.0% over the spring 2009 numbers.

Total 1st time doctoral students are 31 which is an increase of 6 or 24.0% over the spring 2009 numbers.

The Graduate School would like to thank everyone involved in achieving these numbers from our graduate students, faculty, directors and assistants, to the Registrar’s office for diligently working to recruit and enroll the newest students in our programs.  These numbers are very encouraging and are moving us closer to our goal of having 1250 graduate students at Michigan Tech.

DOE Summer 2015 opportunity for STEM Students

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.  Stipends start at $600 per week and eligible Fellows will receive an additional travel and housing allowance.

Eligibility

  • Be at least 18 years of age at time of application;
  • Be a U.S. Citizen;
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0;
  • Be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university (sophomore year or higher) or had a Ph.D. conferred on or after January 2, 2014 in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) degree

Order your cap and gown: Orders must be placed by midnight on February 18, 2018. You can order your cap and gown online through the Campus Bookstore. Remember you may NOT use your undergraduate gown as the graduate gown is much different. If you’ll borrow a graduate gown, let me know. Please direct any questions regarding your order to capandgown@mtu.edu

Qualifications include: A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, computer science/engineering, bioinformatics, biology, statistics, computational biology, math, physics, information sciences, or a related discipline. Necessary skills include education and experience in database concepts and programming, leadership skills, strong written, oral and electronic communication skills, and the ability to work with a team. It is also preferable if the applicant has an advanced proficiency of Microsoft Office Applications and desktop publishing, and experience with Linux operating systems, basic software development, and database development.

IPS offering airport pick-up services

The International Programs and Services (IPS) Office launched their airport pick-up services last night for new students.  The University is expecting over 70 new graduate and undergraduate students from 21 different countries to enroll this Spring.  Airport pick up service to new students until January 11th.

Mapping Faculty Career Processes at Michigan Tech (Lean Report-Out)

The campus community is invited to a Lean report-out on two kaizen events devoted to mapping faculty career processes. The report-out will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 16, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Alumni Lounge. A primary purpose of the event is to facilitate feedback from all members of the Tech community.

The Lean techniques are being used in support of a grant proposal to NSF ADVANCE: “Increasing the Participation and Advancement of Women in Academic Science and Engineering Careers.” Program details can be found online. An ongoing series of kaizen events is being conducted with interdisciplinary teams consisting of representatives from all Colleges, at all faculty ranks and administrative offices. The focus is on identifying steps and programs to improve faculty career processes and goals.

The most recent kaizens addressed pre-tenure and post-tenure career processes. Later kaizens will address recruitment, retention and metrics for success. The kaizen series and related ADVANCE proposal development efforts are supported by the Provost’s Office. Federal Funding General Information Session

Michigan Tech students have an impressive success rate at being awarded some of our nation’s most prestigious and competitive graduate fellowships.

Michigan Tech’s Sponsored Program Enhancement office will host a general information session on  federal funding opportunities.

When: Wednesday April 20th at 6:00 in Fisher Room 131

Please join us if you are interested in finding out how you can fund your graduate education (@ Michigan Tech or at another university) through fellowships/scholarships offered by the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, NASA, and EPA.

Who should attend: Current juniors, seniors, and graduate students who have a competitive GPA, some research experience, and are a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident alien.

Graduate Students Invited to Participate in Safe Place Program

With the increased enrollment of students who openly identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (GLBTQ), the Michigan Tech Safe Place Program has been redesigned to be a comprehensive and in-depth resource to better prepare faculty and staff to address the needs of these students.

The revamped training program addresses a wide range of terms that GLBTQ students use to define their identities, issues that GLBTQ students often deal with during the coming-out process, concerns that GLBTQ students face both in and out of the classroom, ways that faculty and staff can create inclusive classroom and office environments, where faculty and staff can refer students who need to report harassment and the on- and off-campus resources available to students.

Faculty, staff, graduate students and undergraduate student employees are invited to participate in the program. The fall 2012 training times and the online registration form are available at Safe Place.

Two Michigan Tech Students Receive DOE Graduate Fellowships

The US Department of Energy Office of Science has awarded graduate fellowships to two University students.

Colin Gurganus, a PhD student in atmospheric science, and Carley Kratz, who is earning her doctorate in forest science, are among the 150 fellows nationwide selected by the DOE from among 3,300 applicants. They will each receive $50,500 per year for up to three years to support tuition, living expenses, research materials and travel to conferences or to DOE scientific facilities.

“Competition for the DOE fellowships is intense; applicants are drawn from the nation’s finest universities,” said David Reed, vice president for research.  “The fact that two of our students were selected speaks both to the excellence of Michigan Tech’s research program and to the students’ outstanding qualifications, as well as their dedication and enthusiasm. I congratulate them both.”

The new DOE fellowship program is designed to strengthen the nation’s scientific workforce by supporting young students during the formative years of their research.
