2014 Nominations open for The DeVlieg Foundation Fellowships

Nominations are now open for the DeVlieg Foundation Fellowships.

All graduate programs may nominate one eligible PhD student per program.  There will be two recipients – each will receive a stipend for summer 2014 plus support for one credit of tuition.  Eligible students will meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Must be a graduate student in one of the fields supported by the DeVlieg Foundation:
    1. Engineering or a closely related field, OR
    2. Wildlife/biology (2014 Summer Research Award in Biology/Wildlife/Natural Resources)
  2. Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be enrolled in a PhD program.
  4. Must be nominated by student’s graduate program.  Each PhD program may nominate one student.

Nominations are due no later than 4pm on January 29, 2014 to the Graduate School. Please address to the attention of Debra Charlesworth.

Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship program

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi currently awards fifty-one Fellowships of $5,000 each and six at $15,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study.  Each active Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards.

Eligibility:
Open to all active Phi Kappa Phi members or those who have:
  • accepted membership by June 30, 2014
  • applied to enroll as a full-time student in a post-baccalaureate program of study during the coming academic year
Please note:  Students registering in all professional and graduate fields are eligible.
Applicants who have successfully earned 10+ credit hours of graduate study or its equivalent on or before April 15 are not eligible.

Contact your chapter for application deadline information.  Chapter may submit one application to Society headquarters by April 15, 2014.  Recipients will be notified by June 1, 2014.

NRC announces Associateship Programs for 2014

The National Research Council (NRC) administers competitive graduate postdoctoral and senior research awards on behalf of 26 U.S. government research agencies and affiliated institutions with facilities at over 100 locations throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Annual stipends for recent PhD recipients for the 2014 program year range from $42,000 to $80,000 depending upon the sponsoring laboratory, and are appropriately higher for senior award recipients.  Graduate entry level stipends begin at $30,000 and are higher for additional experience.

NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) Program

NASA announces a call for graduate fellowship proposals to the NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) program for the 2014-2015 academic year.  This call for fellowship proposals solicits applications from accredited U.S. universities on behalf of individuals pursuing Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Earth and space sciences, or related disciplines.

The deadline for NEW applications is February 3, 2014, and the deadline for RENEWAL applications is March 17, 2014.

Chateaubriand Fellowship Program

The STEM Chateaubriand Fellowship targets outstanding PhD students enrolled in an American university who wish to conduct part of their doctoral research in a French laboratory for a 4 to 9 month period.  The Office of Science and Technology provide a stipend of up to 1,400 €/month (depending on other sources of funding) and cover the cost of travel and student health insurance.

STEM Chateaubriand fellows are selected through a merit-based competition.  Priority is given to candidates working toward a “double degree” (cotutelle) with their host institution.

All Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) and Health disciplines are eligible. The required level of French remains at the discretion of the host laboratory.

The application deadline is January 31, 2014, for a stay which can begin from September 1, 2014 to April 1, 2015.

Students attend GEM GRAD Lab event

Through collaboration between the Graduate School and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion underrepresented minority students at Tech were given the opportunity to travel to the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities campus) to attend the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science Inc. (GEM) GRAD Lab last weekend.

This event was co-sponsored by the Graduate School at Michigan Tech and the University of Minnesota, and presenters ranged from current graduate students (including Michigan Tech’s GEM fellow, PhD student Sterling Prince) to senior managers, to faculty and senior administrators. They were selected from diverse communities and disciplines and presented on the following topics:

*Why graduate school?
*How to prepare for graduate school
*Understanding the GEM fellowship
*Voices from the field: real life research and internship experiences

In addition to the GRAD lab, students were treated to a reception, dinner and presentation by GEM alum/3M corporation scientist, Stan Rendon at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul.

Michigan Space Grant Consortium Funding Opportunities

The Michigan Space Grant Consortium announces funding opportunities in the following categories: Undergraduate Fellowship, Graduate Fellowship, Pre-College Education, Public Outreach, Teacher Training, and Research Seed Grant.

The deadline for proposal packages is no later than Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m.

The internal Michigan Tech deadline is noon on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
