The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Albany, Oregon is seeking motivated post-graduates (PhD level) interested in researching in the Structural Development Division at NETL. The post-graduate research pertains to materials performance in supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO₂) environments at high temperature. The scope of the materials research is to evaluate whether the available power plant materials are suitable for fossil fuel sCO₂service.

PhD students Ankit Vora (ECE) and Jephias Gwamuri (MSE) co-authored a paper with Joshua Pearce (MSE/ECE), Paul Bergstrom (ECE) and Durdu Guney (ECE) titled “Multi-resonant Silver Nano-disk Patterned Thin Film Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells For Staebler-Wronski Effect Compensation,” in the “Journal of Applied Physics.”

2015 PTI Student Scholarship Opportunities- Applications due Dec 1

The Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) is pleased to announce the continuation of its scholarship program in 2015. PTI is offering scholarships to full-time engineering and architectural students in the U.S. or Canada. The program is open to senior- or graduate-level students whose area of study includes concrete structures, with an emphasis on structural design, materials, construction, or any combination thereof.

Two scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded for the Winter/Spring 2015 school term.

Applications are due December 1, 2014 with the awards to be announced on January 8, 2015. Award recipients will be honored at an award ceremony that will be held in conjunction with the Post-Tensioning Institute’s Annual Technical Conference that will be held in Houston, Texas on April 27, 2015.

US News Ranks Michigan Tech PhD Programs in Engineering, Science

More of Michigan Tech’s PhD level engineering and science programs than ever made US News & World Report’s annual graduate school rankings, released today. The rankings reflect momentum generated by Michigan Tech’s focus on graduate education and research, said Provost Max Seel. The Graduate School has more than doubled its enrollment since 2005.

Michigan Tech’s PhD engineering programs earned an overall ranking of 90th, tied with George Washington University, Rochester Institute of Technology and Mississippi State University. Biomedical engineering at Tech showed up in the rankings for the first time, placing 71st.

Alumnus receives 2014 TMS Young Leader Professional Development Award

Research Assistant Professor Zhiwei Peng (MSE) has received a 2014 TMS Young Leader Professional Development Award from the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society. The award is supported by the TMS Foundation.

Peng, who recently completed a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at Michigan Tech, was honored with the 2013 Bhakta Rath Award for his exceptional research on the use of microwaves to make steel. “I am truly grateful for the education at Michigan Tech which laid a solid foundation for my career,” said Peng. “I am also deeply indebted to my advisor, Jiann-Yang Hwang, for his excellent and invaluable guidance during my PhD studies.”
