Graduate Fellowships from Hertz

The Hertz Foundation gives Graduate Fellowships and are looking for proposals emphasizing near-term application of applied sciences or engineering, including Earth Sciences.  If students have a new way of looking at an applied environmental or geo problem or hazard, the foundation may be interested.  The due date is next Friday,  Nov. 2, which is probably too late to write a proposal from scratch, but is possible if a student already has a proposal partially written.  Both two year and five year fellowships exist.

Northeastern University invites nominations and applications from candidates in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields for the Northeastern University STEM Future Faculty Fellowship Program.

2013-2014 IAF Fellowship Competition Announcement

Fellowships are available to currently registered students who have advanced to candidacy (by the time research begins) for the Ph.D. in the social sciences, physical sciences, technical fields and the professions as related to grassroots development issues. Applications for clinical research in the health field will NOT be considered.

Awards are based on both development and scholarly criteria. Proposals should offer a practical orientation to field-based information. In exceptional cases the IAF will support research reflecting a primary interest in macro questions of politics and economics but only as they relate to the environment of the poor. The Fellowship Program complements IAF’s support for grassroots development in Latin America and the Caribbean, and preference for those applicants whose careers or research projects are related to topics of greatest interest to the IAF. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Organizations promoting grassroots development among poor and disadvantaged peoples;
  • The financial sustainability and independence of development organizations;
  • Trends affecting historically excluded groups, such as African descendants, indigenous peoples, women, people with disabilities and young people;
  • Transnational development;
  • The role of corporate social responsibility in grassroots development;
  • The impact of globalization on grassroots development;
  • The impact on the quality of life of the poor of grassroots development activities in such areas as sustainable agriculture and natural resource management, housing, health care, education, urban development, technology transfer, jobs creation, and marketing and small-enterprise development.

Funding is for between four and 12 months. Research during the 2013-2014 cycle must be initiated between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014.

IAF’s Fellowships provide support for Ph.D. candidates to conduct dissertation research in Latin America and the Caribbean on topics related to grassroots development. The Inter-American Foundation expects to award up to 15 Doctoral Field Research Fellowships in 2012.

Complete proposals include:

  • A complete research prospectus – an application statement, a field research prospectus, a Curriculum Vitae (custom), and a Personal Statement;
  • A letter of University Certification;
  • A letter of affiliation from at least one host organization;
  • Statement of IRB Status or proof of submission or approval;
  • Graduate transcripts;
  • Three academic letters of reference, one which must be from the chair of the applicant’s dissertation committee;
  • A Language Proficiency Report.

International Climate Change Policy and Technology Fellowship Program

Opportunity in Washington, D.C. to contribute to a multilateral initiative to promote industrial efficiency in major economies through the Clean Energy Ministerial (www.cleanenergyministerial.org). The Fellowship position would involve frequent interactions with international counterparts and some international travel.

Prior industrial efficiency experience and demonstrated project management skills are both required.  Preferred qualifications include international experience and prior work in energy and/or climate change policy.  Familiarity with energy management is also desirable.

Stipends range from $50,000 to $100,000 depending on academic level, skills and experience.

Additional allowances for medical insurance or transportation may be provided.

NSF Honors Tech’s Global Watershed Website

A website for Michigan Tech’s Global Watershed program has been singled out as one of two top websites nationwide. The Global Watershed program is part of a graduate STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fellowship program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) at 213 universities across the country. The program, known as GK12, prepares graduate students in STEM fields to work with teachers and students in kindergarten through 12th grade to incorporate scientific research and the scientific method as integral parts of their science education curriculum.

Locally, Michigan Tech’s GK12 Global Watershed program partners graduate student fellows with partner-teachers at the BRIDGE Alternative School, Copper Country Intermediate School District, Hancock High and Middle Schools, Manistee High School and Stanton Township. While the Michigan Tech program focuses primarily on rural schools in the western UP, it also partners with the Colegio Munoz school system in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.

“The website for our GK12 Global Watershed program really is an invaluable tool for organizing and publicizing our project,” said Professor Alex Mayer (CEE), program director.

“It’s critical that we have a polished site that’s easy to use to spread the word about the program to potential GK12 fellows and partner teachers and publicize the accomplishments of our existing fellows and their partner teachers,” Mayer went on to say. “We’re very pleased that NSF has recognized the quality of our web presence.”

The award-winning website was designed and developed locally by the web development firm of opusWeb.com in Hancock. “It’s truly an honor to know that a website our firm developed right here in the Keweenaw was recognized on a national level,” said Jeffery Primeau, opusWeb.com cofounder and director of marketing/communications.

The website was judged on several factors, including design, navigability, structure and content. Comprehensive content/text for the site was written by Lisa Rowan, currently a master’s degree student in ecology at the University of North Florida.

Chateaubriand Fellowship program

Applications are being accepted for the Chateaubriand Fellowship program offered by the Embassy of France. The program offers 10 months of support for Ph.D. students from U.S. institutions to conduct research in France. There are two programs: one is a STEM fellowship program and the other focuses on Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). Recipients receive a stipend, health insurance, and funds for roundtrip travel to France. The deadline for the HSS program is December 31, 2011; STEM Fellowship applications are due February 1, 2012. According to the announcement, “Candidates do not have to be US citizens, but French citizens are not eligible to apply. Students must be enrolled in at an American university.”

Scholarships In Industrial Health and Safety

The U.S. Office of Postsecondary Education is soliciting applications for the Erma Byrd Scholarship Program, which funds students pursuing industrial health and safety studies.  Scholarships of up to $10,000 are available for domestic graduate students and $2,500-5,000 for domestic undergraduate students; scholarships are tied to a service obligation requiring graduates to work in a position related to their studies for at least one year.  Approximately $200,000 is available for 41 awards; applications are due April 25.

Scholarship Opportunity for Engineering Juniors, Seniors and Grad Applicants

Michigan Tech has been awarded NSF scholarships in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. For the next four years, the program will award scholarships to junior and senior engineering students, as well as first-year engineering graduate students.

Faculty and staff are asked to alert students about this opportunity.

The purpose of the undergraduate scholarships is to improve the retention of upper-division engineering students who have financial need and other risk factors that make it difficult to complete their undergraduate degree.

The purpose of the graduate scholarships is to improve the recruitment of women and minorities to graduate school in engineering.

At the undergraduate level, the program will award 35 scholarships per year in amounts of $1,000 to $5,000.

At the graduate level, the program will award five scholarships per year at $8,000.

Graduate Students Invited to Meet with NSF Program Officer, Michael Gorman

On May 17 and 18, Michigan Tech will host a visit by National Science Foundation program officer Michael Gorman, program director for science, technology and society. Gorman, a cognitive psychologist and former Michigan Tech faculty member, will deliver a general presentation about NSF and its research and education programs. He also will deliver presentations for and participate in focused discussions about developing NSF support for on-going activities here at Tech, that are related to nano-scale sciences and engineering (one of Gorman’s personal interests), and developments in the social sciences.

This is an important opportunity to learn about the most recent developments across the foundation. The campus community is invited to any of his activities. Time is built into every event to allow one-on-one conversations. Graduate and undergraduate students in particular are urged to attend any meeting that aligns with their interests.
