 KSO alumni Concert Saturday

Former music directors of the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra(KSO)—Grover Wilkins III, Michael Griffith, and Milton Olsson—share the podium with current director, Joel Neves, as alumni of the orchestra (going back to 1971) join together for an historic KSO Alumni Concert. The concert will be on Saturday, October 13 at 7:30 pm, in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.  

Tickets are on sale now, $19 for adults, $6 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Tickets are available by phone at (906) 487-2073, online at mtu.edu/rozsa, in person at the Central Ticketing Office in the Student Development Complex, or at the Rozsa Box Office the evening of the performance.  Please note the Rozsa Box Office only opens two hours prior to performances.

Fall Gallery Exhibition

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts and the Rozsa Center are excited to announce the fall gallery exhibition, Never Empty, featuring work by artists Dylan Miner (Ann Arbor, MI) and Amanda Breitbach (Nacodoches, TX). The exhibit will run from Friday, October 12 through Saturday, November 10, 2018 in Michigan Tech’s A-Space Gallery, within the Rozsa Center. Gallery hours are M-F 8:00 am – 8:00 pm and 1:00 – 8:00 pm on Saturdays. A reception will be held Saturday, October 27 from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm. Artist Amanda Breitbach will give an artist talk at 6:00 pm that evening.

Join us for the fourth conversation in the Tech Forward series as innovators and entrepreneurs come to campus to share their insights on the disruptive forces driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

A panel discussion with these leaders will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 16 in the Rozsa Center. The presenters will share their views about the Fourth Industrial Revolution and discuss how they think it will change our work, communities, organizations and the economy. They will also share how they believe Michigan Tech can best prepare graduates to lead and be successful in this era.

The presenters are Michigan Tech alumni who are part of the 14 Floors program, which focuses on fostering entrepreneurism and high-tech innovation in the context of global culture and economy. The 14 Floors program is designed to be an infinitely expandable structure analogous to the floors of a building, with something different happening on every floor, providing virtual suites of experiences for Huskies that connect them to innovators, entrepreneurs, mentors and potential employers. The 14 Floors program also includes bi-annual visits to campus by alumni and week-long immersive student trips to places like Silicon Valley.

Jim Fish ’90—an innovation consultant, and technology evangelist with roles at Wayne State Univ, New Hammer LLC, Lemur and Innovatrium.
Paul Fulton ’84—a visionary entrepreneur and CEO—currently leading Nwave, a smart-parking pioneer. Formerly with startups Zentri and Cloudsona, Fulton was also an executive who has worked at Cisco, HP and 3Com.
Dave House ’65—worked at Intel for 23 years, retiring as a senior vice president and general manager, before leading Bay Networks, Nortel and Allegro—then eventually becoming the chairman of the board for Brocade Communications.
Nicholas Lumsden ’02—vice president for product strategy and technology at Online Tech and focuses on hybrid cloud management products and services.
Kanwal Rekhi ’69—has a passion to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. He co-founded Inventus Capital Partners to build a leading Indo-US venture franchise.
John Rockwell ’79—a venture capitalist and consultant who has served as the leader of five technology companies. He is currently CEO of Accelergy Corporation.
John Soyring ’76 ’06—worked 36 years for IBM and was involved in business leadership for the company during that time. He currently is the owner of Sisukas Consulting LLC.

Ring of Steel – Safe Stage Combat Workshop

“The Alpha Psi Omega Theatre Honors Society is pleased to host Ring of Steel for a two-day Safe Stage Combat Workshop. The event will take place at McArdle Theatre (2nd floor of the Walker Arts and Humanities building on the Michigan Tech campus) on Saturday and Sunday, October 13th and 14th starting at 10 am. The workshop is broken down into 2 hour sessions focusing on various types of stage combat from hand to hand combat to swordplay and safety discussions. Short breaks will be provided between sessions in which light snacks will be provided sponsored by Public Safety and Alpha Psi Omega.  

The Ring of Steel Action Theatre and Stunt Troupe is a theatrical combat organization that provides professionally-led classes, training, fight direction, and other services for public and specialty audiences. Instructors are master-level (fully qualified to teach and certify instructors), with the senior instructor having 45 years of experience, 30 feature-film credits and over 500 stage shows, and has served as the fight and stunt director for the Michigan Opera Theatre for the past 16 years. Instructors lead participants in hands-on workshops for theatrical stunt work and swordplay, to train participants in safe method for staging simulated combat.

Participants of all backgrounds are invited to attend and learn how to safely create simulated combat for the stage, film, or reenactments. Participants MUST be over the age of 18 and be ready physically and emotionally for strenuous activity. All equipment will be provided by Ring of Steel.

Michigan Tech Emergency Medical Services

Michigan Tech Emergency Medical Services is a student-led first responder agency with the purpose of providing high-quality medical response 24/7 to the Michigan Tech campus and surrounding areas as well as providing on-campus Heartsaver first aid and CPR and Basic Life Support certifications. Our volunteers are licensed as Emergency Medical Technicians through the State of Michigan and National Registry Certified. Each year, a small group of MTU students are accepted to become certified through participation in over 200 hours of education through the class put on by the agency. Further opportunities for members of the organization involve CPR instructor licensure, providing first aid standby at hockey games and other MTU athletic events, and involvement in community outreach events. Make a Difference Day Registration

Make a Difference Day, the largest national day of community service takes place on Michigan Tech’s campus every fall. Students, faculty, and staff come together to go out into the community to volunteer and make a difference.

Make a Difference Day 2018 will be taking place Saturday, October 20. Check-In will start at 9:00 AM in the MUB Commons. Information packets will be distributed and participants will receive their Make a Difference Day T-Shirts before traveling to their service locations.

Annual Muck Run Scheduled for October 20

The Michigan Tech cross country team has announced the third-annual Michigan Tech Muck Run on Saturday, October 20, at 10 a.m. at the Tech Trails. Runners of all ages are eligible to register and compete in the event.

Pre-registration for Michigan Tech students and members of the Upper Peninsula Road Runners Club will be $15 and public pre-registration will be $20 up until 10/18 at 8:00pm.  Tech Hockey Hosting Intrasquad, Skate With the Huskies on Oct. 6

The Michigan Tech hockey team will play an intrasquad game on Saturday, October 6 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 6:07 p.m.and there will be Skate With The Huskies following the 30-minute game.

Admission for the game will be a cash donation to our local youth hockey organizations. The 2018-19 team will split up and play two 15-minute halves.

The No. 18 ranked Huskies open the 2018-19 season on October 12-13 against No. 1, and defending National Champion, Minnesota Duluth. Puck drop is set for 7:37 p.m.Friday and 7:07 p.m. Saturday. The first WCHA series is November 2-3 at Alabama Huntsville.

2nd Annual Starkey Hearing Foundation Golf Scramble

The sisters of Delta Zeta are hosting their 2nd Annual Starkey Hearing Foundation Charity Golf Scramble on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 11 am. The Starkey Hearing Foundation is a non-profit organization that promotes awareness for speech and hearing and raises money to provide high quality hearing aids to people around the world through various missions. Each year, more than 100,00 hearing aids are delivered through more than 100 missions. Help us support the cause by coming out to our golf scramble! The event will be a 9-hole scramble including a longest drive contest, closest to pin contest, longest putt contest, hole-in-one prizes, and team prizes!

Are you up for a Halloween challenge?  Come join the Michigan Tech Army ROTC program in our inaugural Husky Alpine Run, on Saturday, October 27^th, which is a 5 km trail race ON Mont Ripley!  Don’t ski?  Don’t snowboard?  No worries.  Many people enjoy skiing and snowboarding the slopes of Ripley and now you get to run them!  We encourage everyone to show up and run in their Halloween costume as prizes are awarded to the costume contest winner!  All racers will get complementary food and beverages after the event and there will also be raffle prizes.  The winners of each age group (male and female) will receive medals, and the overall male and female winners will get their names engraved on a plaque that will be posted in the ROTC building.  Sign up now and get a free event t-shirt.  Students get an incredible deal of ONLY $15 for registration!

Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ Turns 200 Years Old!

The School of Technology is ‘thrilled’ to offer an opportunity for their students (& non-SoT majors) to show off their skills and talents in a Halloween Makers Competition for best costume or decoration. Points will be awarded to teams in the following categories:

1) function of the mechanical component;                                        

2) sensor/actuator functionality;

3) robustness of the supporting code;

4) detail and impact of the costume or decoration;

5) creative use of materials;

6) overall creativity of the design.

Set of Rules:

• Teams of 3 or more are required.
• Budget is limited to $50 for the team, points for creative re-use (upscaling) of materials.
• Teams must be comprised of 2 or more SoT majors. Non-SoT students can also join the team.
• Teams must be comprised of 2 or more class years (e.g. freshmen, sophomores, etc.)
• Costume or decoration must include a mechanical component as well as a programmed sensor/actuator.

Judging will be completed by a panel of faculty and staff with expertise in mechanical, electrical, and computing on Halloween, Wednesday, October 31.

A cash prize of $250.00 will be awarded to the best TEAM!

Teams are encouraged to sign up by Friday, October 12^th in the School of Technology’s Main Office (EERC 426) or by completing the Google Form.

Study: Alcohol and Neurovascular Control in Humans

Ever wonder what happens to your sleep quality or health after a night out on the town? Researchers in the Kinesiology & Integrative Physiology Department are looking for the answers to these questions in a project entitled, “Alcohol and Neurovascular Control in Humans.”

The study is conducted in Michigan Tech’s new Sleep Research Laboratory in the Student Development Complex. A minimum of three sleep studies would be conducted at your convenience including a familiarization night and two testing nights. Testing nights is where a placebo or alcohol dose (consistent with 4-5 drinks within 2 hours) would be administered. Blood pressure and nervous system function would be analyzed the following morning.

Social Justice Series

University Marketing and Communications at Michigan Tech is looking for student groups to run temporary takeovers of its Snapchat account. UMC is seeking your help in identifying responsible and outgoing students in your organization who would be willing to run a Snapchat takeover. The benefit to you? Raising student awareness about Michigan Tech in general and about your organization in particular.

The university Snapchat coordinator, Ben Jaszczak, works with campus groups like yours to organize awareness-raising Snapchat takeovers targeted to current and future Huskies. With over 2,000 followers, our Snapchat account is a great way to reach undergraduate and prospective students.

To run a Snapchat takeover, all you need to do is identify a student(s) who is willing to run the takeover and choose a time slot of 1-3 days where they can highlight your program or event. At-Risk for Students Course

College can be stressful at times, and Michigan Tech wants to empower our students with the resources they need to help one another.  We’re excited to present the Kognito simulation At-Risk for Students course, which will help in recognizing signs of distress, determining if a friend needs help, how to talk to someone in need of help, or where you or your friend can turn to for resources.  It can be difficult to deal with these kinds of issues, but an effective conversation can help more than you think-it can help change someones life.  We hope you enjoy this simulation, as we all work together to help one another and build a stronger community.

Kognito is an online training simulation to help students learn how to talk to others in need and help in a crisis situation using role playing.
