Pancake Breakfast to Benefit Relay for Life

Phi Delta Chi and Lambda Chi Alpha are teaming up for their annual pancake breakfast on February 27 at St. Albert the Great on MacInnes Drive from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Bring friends, family, and other good company to celebrate a break from cooking and an all you can eat breakfast.

Tickets are $5 at the door or $4 in advance at the MUB Commons. A promotions table will be set up from 10:30-1:30 on weekdays until the event.

Comedian Chloe Hilliard Hosted by Late Night Programming

Chloe Hilliard is a larger than life comedian. Well, that’s because she’s 6’1 and rocks a killer afro. As a journalist-turn-comedian, she is entertaining the masses with her wit and ability to find the humor in everything. She was recently made her national TV debut on NBC’s smash hit “Last Comic Standing” appearing on AXSTV’s “Gotham Comedy Live” and is a frequent panel guest on “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore”.

The show starts a 10:00 PM in the MUB Ballroom on Saturday, February 19. Admission is at no cost.

MUB Board Hosting Casino Night

Come spend your Thursday night with us in the DHH Ballroom listening to some smooth jazz and gambling your [fake] life savings away. The Inertia Funk and Fusion Band will provide the tunes, and we provide the fun while playing poker, Euchre, roulette, and other awesome casino games! All students will receive a bag of casino chips upon entry, with every 200 chips able to be exchanged for a ticket for raffle prizes including an Amazon Gift Card, a poker set, a crock pot, and a M&M Slot Machine Dispenser. Free snacks and drinks will also be provided. Don’t worry about gambling your life savings away – the most you can really lose is your honor!

Brazilian food is on the menu for Friday’s Khana Khazana in the Memorial Union Food Court. Serving will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, February 19.

The menu includes:

Feijoada : A various type of pork and sausage stew with black beans served with rice.
Salpicao : Brazilian style salad topped with crispy potato.
Bolinho de Chuva : Donut ball sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon.

African Night is Saturday

African Night is Saturday February, 20, in the MUB Ballroom. This year’s theme is “The African Market Experiences.”

Dinner is from 6 to 8 p.m. with a performance from 8 to 10 p.m.

Featured performers this year are:

• Madafo the Storyteller—Madafo tells classic tales for the young and elderly, recites poetry written by the masters and plays the music of the sage. The works of Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Kahil Gibran and other favorite authors are presented in this delightful and insightful program of timeless laughter, folk literature and song.
• Bichinis Bia Congo Dance Theatre—Established in 1979 by Brazzaville, Congo native, Jean-Claude Biougilla Biza (Sompa) is a performance theater that promotes the preservation and practice of authentic Congolese Dance and African Culture.
• Star Fashion Show—Star Misskemi is a Nigerian model, designer and makeup artist based in Lower Michigan running House of Zuri, an African-inspired agency providing services in fashion designing, modeling, styling, photography and Makeup-artistry.

Other attractions are a photo-booth and souvenir store featuring African print apparels and accessories available for people to purchase. HuskyLEAD Session – Setting Up Your Settings for Success

The next HuskyLEAD session will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at 6:00 PM for one hour only in the Memorial Union Building Alumni Lounge. The title of the workshop is “Setting Up Your Settings for Success” and will be presented by Jeremiah Baumann, manager of digital media, Housing and Residential Life. You will learn more about Google calendars, drives, filters, notifications, and other resources to make you a more organized, effective and “put together” leader.

HuskyLEAD is a series of workshops held in the Fall and Spring semesters that are geared toward developing the leadership skills of students. There is no cost to attend and all students are welcome. Bob Jacquart, CEO and owner of Jacquart Fabric Products and Michigan Tech Board of Trustees Member, will be speaking at Michigan Tech next Thursday in the first of an ongoing speaker series that is sponsored by the Pavlis Honors College and the new Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship. Jacquart Fabric Products is the home of the Stormy Kromer. Bob Jacquart was born and raised in Ironwood, MI and acquired the Stormy Kromer brand from the original owner in 2001 when he learned that production of the hats was about to cease. Since 2001, his team has built a globally recognized brand around a U.P. based manufacturing company. Bob will share his experiences and lessons learned in a short presentation followed by a question and discussion session. The New HuskyCard

Do you use the US Bank debit feature on your HuskyCard? If so, please be aware of these important dates:

• February 21: Any card replacements issued after this date will no longer have the US Bank feature. However, if no replacement is needed and your card has been previously activated, then your current HuskyCard will still work as a bank card through June 2016.
• June 30: You must withdraw any remaining balance on your card by this date; contact US Bank and any remaining account balance will be returned to you.

If you have never activated the US Bank feature, then this change to the HuskyCard will not affect you, and you can use your card as you have in the past. In the end, this change will make replacing and issuing cards a simpler process for you.

Rotaract Fundraising for Polio Vaccinations

Monday, February 22, Rotaract Club will be fundraising for Polio vaccinations at a booth in the library across from the main desk on the first floor from 10-2 .

When children get vaccinated for Polio, they receive a purple stamp on their pinkies. To raise awareness and money, we will ask for a donation (1 dollar or more) and paint pinkies purple with nail polish. This is a great way to spread awareness about a disease that not many people know about.

Upper Peninsula ‐ NE Wisconsin ACS Student Research Symposium

The Upper Peninsula Section of the American Chemical Society is now soliciting abstract submissions for the Student Research Symposium, which will be held at NMU’s New Science Facility in Marquette on Saturday, April 2.

The purpose of the event is to provide a venue for students to present their research in chemistry, chemical engineering and related fields. This symposium will be an excellent opportunity for students, faculty and the community at large to learn about the interesting research being conducted in the UP. We expect to see participation from a variety of institutions and academic levels of the upper peninsula and northeastern Wisconsin.

Poster abstracts can be submitted online. The deadline for abstract submission is March 18. There is no registration fee. More information at the UPLS-ACS website.

Cash awards to the best posters will be given, and every participant will receive a gift from the UP local section.

On behalf of the University, we are seeking nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership, Vice President for Student Affairs and Advancement Award for Service, and various other student leadership awards. The recipient of each award will be honored at the 22nd Annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony at 6:00 PM, Friday, April 15, 2016, in the Ballroom of the Memorial Union Building.

 $15,000 Scholarship to Study in Ireland

African Night Hosted by the African Student Organization

African Night is next Saturday, February 20 at the MUB Ballroom. Tickets are selling from February 10-19 at the MUB Commons between Noon-4:00 PM. You can also email asoexec-l@mtu.edu for ticket deliveries. This years theme is African Market and there will be a variety of dishes to try from 6-8PM. Following dinner will be a live performance by Madafo Bichinis Dancers. There will also be African prints and souvenirs (clothing, jewelry, bags, etc.) for sale as well as a free photo booth where you can try on some African fashions and have your photo taken. People should come and witness the “African Market Experience.”

Visiting Artist Rachel Kauff Explores Ecological Art Making

Michigan Technological University’s Rozsa Center, The Department of Visual and Performing Arts, and The Department of Biological Sciences are excited to present a lecture and exhibition exploring the connections between art and ecology, by visiting artist Rachel Kauff. Kauff will first present a lecture, Past Use: Ecology and Art Objects, on Friday, Feb. 19 at 4:00 PM in Michigan Tech’s Biological Sciences building, DOW 641. A-Space, the Rozsa Professional Gallery, will feature Kauff’s work in an exhibition titled Tipping Points, February 20 – April 25. There will be an opening reception and gallery discussion in A-Space for Tipping Points on Saturday, February 20, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. This event is partially sponsored/funded by the Visiting Women & Minority Lecturer/Scholar Series (VWMLS) which is funded by a grant to Institutional Equity & Inclusion from the State of Michigan’s King-Chavez-Parks Initiative.

International Club has started the Language and Culture Study Program which provides languages that Tech does not offer. Weekly Korean and Chinese lessons are happening on Tuesday and Thursday nights 6-8pm in Walker 120A, individual tutors available. Other language sessions (Thai, Portuguese, Hindi, Native American, etc) could be available upon more requests towards iclub@mtu.edu. International Programs and Services has exciting news! Go Overseas just announced they are sponsoring TWO scholarships for students to study abroad in Ireland for a semester! Hearing Loop System in Fisher 135

Recently, Institutional Equity and Inclusion (IEI) and Information Technology (IT) coordinated the installation of a hearing loop system in Fisher Hall, Room 135. This system allows students, employees, and community members who use hearing aids to have a greater ability to hear the content of classes, programs, and events in this room. The idea of a hearing loop system was originally brought forward by a hearing impaired student. The Calumet Theatre has a hearing loop system and this student indicated that Michigan Tech could benefit from a similar system. Funding for diversity and disability initiatives, received from The General Motors Corporation, was devoted specifically to this hearing loop system. IEI and IT worked with Hearing Loop Systems from Holland, MI to determine the best options for Michigan Tech. In the future, as new construction is designed on campus, hearing assistance systems will hopefully be incorporated. IEI would like to promote the availability of the hearing loop system on campus. If your department, group, or organization is hosting an event in Fisher 135 please include the statement “Fisher 135 is Hearing Loop equipped” in your advertising. Winter Carnival Book Sale Saturday, 2/6

The Friends of the Michigan Tech Library (FMTL) will hold a Winter Carnival book sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 6 in the lobby of the Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library.

Merchandise will include Michigan Tech heritage souvenir blankets, Copper Country historic photo note cards and selected used books. Free hot chocolate and cookies will be available. All proceeds will go to support the Michigan Tech Library.

Winter Carnival CashKey Special

Transportation Services is running a Winter Carnival special on cash keys:

If you routinely park at the on-campus metered spaces, you may want to consider purchasing a CashKey. A CashKey is a simple round key that can be attached to your car keychain and be used in place of quarters to quickly and conveniently purchase time at a parking meter.

CashKeys may be purchased and reloaded at the Transportation Services office (Admin 100) in amounts of $25, $50, or $100. CashKeys allow parking at a rate of $0.75/hour and may only be used in hour increments. There is a $25 deposit fee that will be refunded upon return of your CashKey.

The Winter Carnival special will run the whole month of February. All CashKey amounts will be discounted 10 percent. That means you can get $25 of parking for $22.50, $50 of parking for $45, or $100 of parking for $90.

Winter Carnival Parking and Extended Shuttle Service

In order to accommodate the many visitors during Winter Carnival, the following lots will be available beginning at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3rd (Lot 11 opens 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5th), free of charge, no permits required.

     Lot 9 (commuter lot by the Rozsa Center)

     Lot 5 (graduate student lot by the Rozsa)

     Lot 27 (pay lot between the Administration Building and MUB)

     Overnight parking – you may park in Lot 9, the commuter lot by the Rozsa without a permit.

     Lot 11 (near the Administration Building) will be open at 4 pm on Friday.

Lastly, there will be free parking at all metered areas.  However, please be aware that all other areas/lots not listed above will be fully enforced as usual.

Transportation Services will also extend its operations during Winter Carnival.  The MTU shuttle service will run from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.  The City of Houghton shuttle service will run its regular scheduled service.  Please remember that the MTU shuttle bus is not equipped to handle children but you may utilize the on-demand service that the City of Houghton provides.

We hope you enjoy this expanded shuttle service during Winter Carnival and free parking in designated areas.

Khana Khazana Fundraiser for the Children of Syria

Khana Khazana is providing an opportunity for the Iranian Community at Michigan Tech to raise funds to support the children of Syria. This opportunity is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the MUB food court. Cost is $7.25 per plate including a fountain drink. The menu includes: Chicken Cutlet, or “KuKu-ye Morq” in Farsi, is a delicious dish from northern Iran. It is a mix of shredded chicken breast, eggs and onions. A special red sauce adds a very pleasant juicy taste to it. Potato Kuku is an egg-based Persian vegetarian dish flavored with shredded potatoes, onion, garlic and chives. Aush Reshteh is a delicious hearty soup in Iran made of fresh vegetables, rice noodles, beans and kashk. Halva is a delicious sweet desert made up of rice flour, sugar, rosewater, saffron and almond.

Volunteers Needed for Get WISE!

The Center for Pre-College Outreach is seeking volunteers to help with a workshop for local youth called Get WISE. Get WISE stands for Get Women in Science and Engineering! The event is open to 250 local 7th and 8th grade girls – they come to campus, take part in fun science/engineering challenges, engage in friendly competition, and meet college role models. Volunteers at this event will be in charge of a small group of girls and will facilitate the three activities throughout the day. Get WISE will be held on Tuesday, February 23rd from 9:00 am – 1:30 pm in the SDC Wood Gym. Our greatest need is currently for late morning and early afternoon (times between 11:00 – 1:30), but any amount of time you can give is tremendously appreciated, from one hour to all day! It’s a great event; check out photos from last year here. Lunch is provided for those who are there during that time, and there will be training sessions beforehand so that everyone is fully prepared. Help Plan the 2016 Keweenaw Color Run

The Keweenaw Color Run(KCR) is a locally organized event in its second year that serves the whole community of Michigan Tech and the Keweenaw. The event brings students, community members and businesses together from different backgrounds and cultures for entertainment and fitness. We are committed to diversity, culture and working towards a stronger sense of community here in our home. Last year, we were able to donate over $2,000 to community Non-Profits all while providing a top-notch event experience for over 600 participants. This year we have the set the goal to provide an even better event to more participants while staying core to our values: Join us in pursuit of this mission!

We are seeking candidates from a wide perspective of campus involvement to help “plot the course” of the 2016 KCR. Come build and demonstrate your leadership skills with a position on the KCR Committee. We provide leadership opportunities to: Manage 200 Volunteers, oversee a large organizational budget, develop a social advertising portfolio, refine processes, work with permitting and grant writing, form relationships with corporations and local businesses; all invaluable tools for a resume and for your career. Not to mention, you get to spend time with an awesome team doing awesome things for the Community!

Position Responsibilities For All Positions:
Commit to working about 1-2 hours per week, more the week of the event.
Attend every-other week committee meetings on MTU Campus.
Complete action Items as assigned and fulfill your goals as set with the committee.
Represent the mission of the KCR when acting in official capacity and in daily life.

ADVENTURE SPRING BREAK 2016 with the Outdoor Adventure Program

The OAP student staff plan a number of Spring break adventures for students. The OAP prides itself on offering a quality experience in the outdoors, planned and led by student trip leaders. Our student trip leaders have extensive training, including Wilderness First Responder Certification and previous trip leader experience. Our trip leaders spend a great deal of time researching and planning these trips to ensure a safe, fun, and sometimes educational experience for their peers.         Yosemite Valley Experience! Live in Yosemite Valley, California for the week! Activities could include hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, climbing, and soaking in the Yosemite Valley culture. Price: $300 (+ airfare to San Francisco Airport)     Southbound Experience – Orange Beach, Alabama with pit stops at Red River Gorge and Mammoth Cave! Get your swimsuits ready! Khana Khazana will serve Filipino cuisine from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow in the MUB food court. The cost is $7.25 for a full meal including a fountain soda.

Opening Reception For Noise Floor Tomorrow

Noise surrounds us. In the industrial world we are constantly bombarded with sounds, most of which we no longer even notice (the hum of compressor motors, the whine of routers, the whirr of hard drives, the roar of lawnmowers).

Noise Floor is an interactive exhibit by artist Josh Loar (VPA), focused on the pervasive noise around us, mechanical and cultural–bringing into focus sounds that we normally shut out of our conscious minds.

Join us for a reception with the artist at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow. in the Rozsa Gallery A-Space. This exhibit is free and open to the public, and will be in the Rozsa Gallery A-Space through jan. 30.

Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. M-F and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. Loar, Professor of Practice in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, is a multimedia artist and designer whose works have been featured in galleries and salons from NYC to Los Angeles, and his design and music composition has been featured in countless stage shows, films, TV programs, theme parks, concerts, and so on. He is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, director, writer, painter, filmmaker, and all-around general artist type.

Are you interested in joining a community of self-motivated, independent-thinking students who take charge of their education and full advantage of all that Michigan Tech has to offer? If so, consider applying to the Pavlis Honors College’s Scholars and Leaders Programs.

All motivated and committed undergraduate students in good academic standing are invited, regardless of GPA.

The current application window will remain open until March 1 for students wishing to join the college in fall.

All scholars and leaders students take core courses, participate in an immersion experience and carry out an honors project. The Scholars and Leaders Programs offer multiple pathways for students to complete the requirements for Pavlis Honors College designation on their diplomas and transcripts as well as special recognition in the graduation program.

One pathway is the well-established Pavlis Institute for Global Technological Leadership which is designed to prepare students to become successful leaders through focused coursework and interdisciplinary, team-based project work implemented in a cross-cultural environment.

Students applying to this program should have at least three years remaining in their undergraduate degree program and be prepared to travel to one our foreign project centers the summer between their third and fourth years of study at Michigan Tech.

A second pathway is the new Peace Corps Prep program, an official partnership with the U.S. Peace Corps. This program prepares undergraduates for Peace Corps service or other cross-cultural, community-based professional work. Students gain cross-cultural and foreign language learning experience in and out of the classroom. They also gain first-hand experience in a prominent sector of community development work, such as health, education or environment. The Peace Corps Prep program emphasizes establishing strong cross-cultural professional partnerships and developing an interdisciplinary framework for addressing pressing global problems such as climate change, sanitation, childhood malnutrition, girl’s education and others.

Students can customize their area of focus to fit their personal interests. Students applying to this program should have at least two years remaining in their undergraduate degree program.

Third, is the Custom Pathway Program, where students can customize their own pathway to incorporate an enterprise experience, student research, an entrepreneurial endeavor or an industrial internship, to name just a few options, to complete the Pavlis Honors College requirements.

If none of our established pathways suit your needs and interests, design your own and work with the college’s faculty and staff to realize your vision for success.

Intermittent nighttime closures of Portage Lake Lift Bridge set for week of January 25

Intermittent nighttime closures of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge have been scheduled for January 25-29 as part of ongoing maintenance work. The closures will likely result in delays for motorists. The contractor for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be testing new bridge components. These tests require a series of lifts of the bridge span and a full closure of the bridge to traffic. Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes between 7 and 11 p.m.and delays of up to 30 minutes between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. during the testing period. The lower bridge deck will be closed to snowmobile traffic during these tests. The $8.4 million project involves upgrades and preventive maintenance on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock. The project started in mid-December 2014 and is scheduled to be completed in mid-April 2016.

Salvation Army Showing Inside Out

This Saturday, the Salvation Army is having our first movie night and we are showing “Inside Out”. Students from Michigan Tech are welcome to come and enjoy the movie. The movie starts around 6:00PM and it will be at their main building in Hancock. They are aslo looking for any college students to donate their time in tutoring children who needs help in school. Colorful Taste of Thailand hosted by the Thai Student Association will be on Saturday, January 16 at the MUB Ballroom. It offers full-meal courses which you can enjoy the many colors of fine Thai cuisine. The courses will include appetizers, main courses, desserts, and drinks.

Pete Seeger: The Storm King at the Rozsa

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts presents the grammy nominated “Pete Seeger: The Storm King.” It’s an evening of live music, poetry and video with a look back at the great hero of 60’s music, peace and the counterculture movement.

This beautiful collection of recorded stories, narratives, and poems spoken by the late Pete Seeger and longtime protege, producer and drummer Jeff Haynes, is set to live, multi-genre music that enhances Seeger’s marvelous reminiscences.

“Pete Seeger: The Storm King,” comes to the Rozsa at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22.

Student Activities is pleased to announce the Spring 2016 HuskyLEAD sessions. HuskyLEAD is a series of workshops designed to develop the leadership skills of students. The sessions are held on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 PM and last only one hour. Tech’s Sunday Hockey Game to be Streamed Live

Michigan Tech’s game at the Desert Hockey Classic this Sunday will be available live via Pac-12.com. Fans can watch the game free-of-charge by clicking HERE.

The Huskies will play at either 2 p.m. or 5 p.m. ET on Sunday depending on the result of Friday’s showdown with UCONN. Arizona State, who is hosting the event, will play the late game Sunday regardless of its result in the semifinals vs. Yale.

There is no live broadcast or stream of Tech’s game today. Those not making the trip to Arizona to watch the Huskies take on Connecticut can listen to the contest live on Mix 93 and Pasty.net or follow along on Twitter (@mtuhky) for live in-game updates.

Volunteers Needed for 2016 U.S. Skiing Championships

Volunteers are still needed for the 2016 U.S. Skiing Championships hosted by Michigan Tech at its on-campus Nordic Training Center Jan. 3-9. The event will consist of four race days: classic distance races on Jan. 3, freestyle sprint races on Jan. 4, freestyle distance races on Jan. 7 and classic sprints on Jan. 9. The website, NordicChampionship.org, has full race details and volunteer registration. Volunteers are needed for race registration and check-in, at the start and finish areas, on the course to help with crowd crossing and before and after the events to set up and tear down. With the help of a supportive community and network of volunteers, Michigan Tech has successfully hosted the U.S. Skiing Championships three times previously: 2007, 2008 and 2015. Toy’s for Tots Donation Box on Campus

The Registrar’s Office is once again participating in the Toys for Tots program that runs until December 23rd. While you are out shopping for the holidays, please consider purchasing a toy that will benefit a local child. The program is looking for new, unwrapped donations for children up to age 16. The donation box is located on the first floor of the Administration Building by the elevators. Book Drive to Support Community Center in Ghana, Africa

Pavlis Institute for Global Technological Leadership this past summer  had the incredible opportunity to travel to Ghana, Africa to carry out numerous projects.  Part of the experience led to a community center in a small town called Abesim.  The Pavlis program has worked with this community center in the past, but the team felt that they should bring attention back to this incredible resource for students.  One of the most unfortunate things about this community center is that it is etremely lacking in educational material for students achieving higher education.  Therefore, as part of a Senior Capston Experience, Courtney De Cramer is working with the Ghana team that will be traveling to the country in the summer of 2016 to donate college-level textbooks to this community center.  Therefore, they are running a book drive from December 7-December 19 to collect any college level materials for the team to bring on their journey.  They will accept any and all donations.  To donate or for questions please contact Pete Seim (pjhokeme@mtu.edu) or Courtney De Cramer (ckdecram@mtu.edu).

Pavlis Honors College Angel Tree

This holiday season, the Pavlis Honors College is sponsoring a Salvation Army Angel Tree. If you are able to purchase a gift for a child in need, stop by room 722 of the M&M building to choose an angel tag off our tree. The tags contain the name of a child, their age and their interests. After purchasing a gift, attach the tag to it and return it under the tree. The Salvation Army asks that the gifts remain unwrapped. The last day to drop off a gift will be Dec. 11.   For many children in the Keweenaw, your gift may be the only one they open this holiday season. We are sponsoring 50 children this year and with the help of Michigan Tech faculty, staff and students, hope to provide all of them with gifts. Thank you for your generosity.

The annual Museum Holiday Sale begins today and will continue through Dec. 23. The museum is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.   All gift shop merchandise is 20 percent off.
