Student News Briefs – Friday, February 6, 2015

NEWS

1. Student Leadership Award Nominations Now Open Online

At Michigan Tech we are blessed with students that are crazy smart, motivated and adventurous.  As faculty and staff we partner with these students to inspire community, scholarship, possibilities, accountability, and tenacity. And we realize how lucky we are to be able to work alongside them in their academic and career pursuits.  Now is the time to recognize these students for their commitment, enthusiasm, and leadership. On behalf of the University, we are seeking nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership, Vice President for Student Affairs and Advancement Award for Service, and various other student leadership awards. The recipient of each award will be honored at the 21st Annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony at 6:00 PM, Friday, April 17, 2015, in the Ballroom of the Memorial Union Building.

The nomination process is simple and actually quite easy. All awards and information about each can be found on the web at www.sa.mtu.edu/awards/ . For each individual award, simply click on the award title, then complete and submit the nomination form.

Nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership and the Vice President for Student Affairs and Advancement Award for Service are due by 5:00 PM, Friday, March 6, 2015.

Nominations for all other Student Leadership Awards are due by 12:00 PM, Friday, March 20, 2015.

Please take a minute to nominate a student or colleague today.

Questions concerning any of the awards should be directed to Karma Kilpela, Student Activities, at 487-1963 or karma@mtu.edu .

Thank you for recognizing our best and brightest students.  Your support is appreciated.

Thus, compensated activities (such as faculty committee work) are not eligible. However, activities that have evolved from compensated work are eligible, provided that they are separate and distinct from compensated duties. Eligible activities may span more than one year; however, this is not intended as a “Lifetime Achievement” award for service accumulated over many years or decades.

Faculty, staff, or students may nominate a faculty member who is making the campus or community a better place for all of us. Nomination instructions and forms are available at:
http://www.mtu.edu/senate/resources/faculty-award/
Past winners can be seen at:

5. Fifth Annual Snowfall Contest Now Open

The flakes are flying, and we Huskies couldn’t be more excited that the season of snow is upon us. Do you think you know what Heikki Lunta has in store for us?

Michigan Tech faculty, staff, students, retirees, alumni and friends are invited to predict our monthly snowfall and the grand total for the 2014-15 season in our fifth annual Snowfall Contest.

Enter by the 10th day of each month, and if your guess is closest to the total amount of snow that falls in the Keweenaw for the month, you’ll win a totally-Tech gift (like a winter survival kit, pasty vouchers, a pint glass or Tech gear). Enter the monthly contest.

You can also make your best guess on how much snow is going to fall in the Copper Country during the 2014–15 season. If your prediction is closest to the actual total amount, you’ll win a two-night stay on campus and a Michigan Tech Winter Survival Kit. Enter the annual contest.

You can check out the archive of snowfall totals online. Good luck!

8. New Backcountry Route Added to Tech Trails

A new backcountry, single-track route has been added to the Tech Trails. The route, which runs from the main trailhead to the Nara trailhead, is now open to fatbikers, skiers and snowshoers.

This route follows the main ski trails in two places for a few hundred meters. Please stay far to the un-tracked side of the main trails while transiting the wide segments, and remember to yield to all skiers.

The more we use the backcountry route (especially snowshoers), the better it packs, and the more fun it is to ride. As we get more snow, regular grooming will be added to this route.

Please note this trail is intended for fatbikes only (3-1/2-inch or larger tires). Also, if your fatbike is making ruts deeper than the skiers on the wide trails, come back another time.

Remember to support the trails and purchase your annual trail membership or day pass. Come out to the trails, and enjoy the winter!

Diwali Night 2014 Final Poster A2

14. Celebrate Diwali Night Saturday with Indian Food and Entertainment

Diwali Night, the Indian festival of lights, has become a tradition far from its Indian roots—at Michigan Tech. This Saturday, Dec. 6, is Diwali Night at Tech, hosted by the Indian Students Association (ISA).

Dinner, served from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Commons, will include Hara Bhara Kabab—a vegetable patty stuffed with spinach, potatoes and green peas; Chicken Mughlai—a cashew curry chicken; Paneer Kadai—a vegetarian entree of cottage cheese in tomato-based curry; pita bread; Kashmiri Pulav—Basmati rice cooked in Indian spices and dried fruits; and Vermicelli Kheer—a dessert of flavored vermicelli pudding with milk and sugar.

After dinner, there will be a performance at 7:30 p.m. at the Rozsa Center, on the theme “The Wonder Years,” focusing on college life with friends. The Indian Students Association band will play Indian music. Drama and dance will include Indian classical Bharatnatyam, from southern India; folk dances including Bhangra or Punjabi from North India, and Lavani, which is Maharashtrian folk dancing from the West of India, and the Western hip-hop.

There are various legends about the origin of Diwali. Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. In Bengal, the festival is dedicated to the worship of Kali, the dark goddess of strength. Ganesha, the elephant-headed god who is the symbol of auspiciousness and wisdom is also worshipped in most Hindu homes during Diwali. The festival also commemorates the return of Rama, along with Sita and Lakshman, from his 14-year exile and the vanquishing of the demon-king Ravana.

Tickets include dinner and the performance. The cost is $15 for the general public and $8 for ISA members.

Tickets for the event are available at the following:

Rozsa Center webpage
SDC Ticket Office—in person or by calling 7-2073
MUB Commons Promotion Desk—11 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Dec. 5
Rozsa Box Office—Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. for the performance only
