Changes Made to Experience Tech Hockey Ticket Procedures

Michigan Tech students receive free admission to home hockey games thanks to the Experience Tech Fee. The process by which they will gain entrance to games has changed for 2013-14.

Students no longer need to pick up tickets in advance. Thanks to the new technology available in the HuskyCards that were issued this fall, students will be able to touch their ID card to a scanner at the door. The student entrance will be at the northwest corner of the arena (closest to Portage Health University Center).

As in the past, the first 750 students will be admitted free and may sit in any Experience Tech seat. Those seats are located in sections K, L, M, N and O of the arena and designated with a sticker on the seat back.

Doors open prior to each home hockey game one hour in advance. To ensure the best seats, students should be present when the arena opens.

Michigan Tech begins its 2013-14 hockey season this Saturday, October 5 with a contest vs. Laurentian. Opening faceoff is set for 7:07 PM.

FinanceU- Financial Literacy Tool

The Office of Financial Aid and the student Finance Club have partnered to offer FinanceU, a financial literacy program designed to increase financial awareness of students and to assist students in making informed financial decisions now and in their professional lives.  The Finance Club is advised by Emanuel Oliveira in the School of Business and Economics. The Financial Aid Office representative is Cindy Cowell.

FinanceU is a great avenue to introduce students to CashCourse, a free financial literacy tool sponsored by the Alumni Association and available on the Financial Aid website at www.cashcourse.org/michigantech.

In addition to the FinanceU events, the Financial Aid Office can be contacted to schedule a financial literacy presentation or one on one assistance. The presentations or meetings can be conducted in any area of financial literacy including budgeting, student loans, financial aid, or savings, to name just a few.

An informal survey of students attending a FinanceU event last December showed that students can enhance their financial literacy skills. Of the respondents, 78% have a savings plan with 100% of those with a savings plan indicating that the tool they use for tracking saving is their checking account. Other savings tools used include a piggy bank, securities and no tool used.

Seeking Students for Video Project

As the Generations of Discovery campaign draws to a close, we in UMC are working on a video to be shown at the celebration. The video will convey a message of thanks, featuring photos of students, faculty, and staff from throughout campus.

We’re looking for students who are enthusiastic, successful, and/or thankful for the experiences/resources/opportunities they’ve had at Michigan Tech. Do you know students who fit the bill? We’d love to include them!

UMC will host an “open-call” photo session next Wednesday, September 4, in UMC (Garden Level Admin), from 10:00 AM – noon and 2:00 – 4:00 PM. Students (and faculty and staff members) are encouraged to drop in—individually or in pairs or groups—and have their photo taken holding a “Thank You” sign.

Photos will take less than five minutes, and students can come as they are. Casual class attire, Michigan Tech apparel, jeans, shorts, and hats are all okay (no slogan tees, ripped or stained clothing, or profanity on clothing, please).

For more information please contact Kara Sokol at kwsokol@mtu.edu
