1. Khana Khazana Serves Chinese Cuisine

This Friday, June 27 from 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM, Khana Khazana will feature Chinese cuisine cooked by Lu Yang, a graduate student of the Department of Geological Engineering.

The main dish is Fried Rice. It is steamed rice stir-fried with corn, carrots, peas, and seasoned with soy sauce, oyster sauce, black pepper, and salt. Shrimp  is added for the meat lovers.  Cold Milk Tea will also be served which is made from tea leaves, milk, and sugar, and served with ice cubes.

Khana Khazana is going to serve the meals at the trailer, located in front of the J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library.


2. Student Activities July Programming Events

July is the peak of summer and Student Activities is on top of the fun with a Sunset Cruise in Copper Harbor, Paddle Board Demos, a picnic at Prince’s Point and so much more going on locally. Check out our calendar of events or go to Involvement Link for more details.


3. Little Huskies Scholarship Application Deadline Set for July 15

Please be aware that Little Huskies Child Development Center has scholarships available to preschool age families through the Access to High Quality Early Childhood Education Scholarship Fund. Infant and toddler availability is not anticipated, but families are welcome to apply for children of any age, and availability will be reassessed when scholarship applications are reviewed.

The purpose of the scholarship fund is to remove financial roadblocks to allow Michigan Tech’s most needy families access to high-quality early childhood education at Little Huskies. The focus demographics are undergraduate, graduate and low-income employee families. Their success at Michigan Tech is a guiding principle. A completed application and all required materials must be submitted and received no later than July 15 for the 2014 academic year. 4. Bootcamp Conditioning Classes at Michigan Tech Recreation

Sand & Sun… Summer Fitness has Begun! This high-powered workout uses kettlebells, TRX suspension training, resistance bands, and body weight. Bootcamp is open to all fitness level participants and will push you through a fast and effective mix of strength, conditioning and core training. Burn fat, build stamina and sculpt your body!

Summer Session #2 Starts July 8.

1. Student Activities Hosts Event, Chocolate Covered Banana’s

2. Sign Up for the Sunset Cruise in Copper Harbor

The very popular Copper Harbor Sunset Cruise aboard the Isle Royale Queen IV will be taking place on Thursday, July 17.  Sign up is required for the student cruise and will be held at the OAP on Friday, June 27 at 2:00 PM.  Your student ID is required and a $5.00 fee that includes the cruise and transportation to Copper Harbor.  Buses will leave from the MUB bus stop at 6:30 PM sharp so please arrive by 6:00 PM to collect your ticket and board the bus.

3. Sign Up for Student Event, Intro to Golfing

Student Activities and Portage Lake Golf Course team up to bring you a beginner level group lesson. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at golf but didn’t know where to start, this is your opportunity to learn the basics of golf course etiquette.  Course Manager and PGA professional, Mark Maroste, will introduce the basics and you will have a chance to try something new!

The event will be held on July 11 from 2:00-4:00 PM. The bus leaves the MUB Bus Stop at 1:30 PM.  The deposit of $5.00 at sign up that you will get back when you leave for the event. Attendance is limited and sign up is required. Come to the OAP at 2:00 PM during the Student Activities event, Chocolate Covered Banana’s, to sign up.

1. Indoor Training for your Outdoor Activities

3. Volunteer Opportunity

The Aspirus Keweenaw Copperman Triathlon will be held on August 2 this year in beautiful Copper Harbor. The committee has begun its search for volunteers for this year’s race. Without the help of all of the wonderful volunteers, this race would not be possible. There are many opportunities in various capacities. If you’re available to help on either the 1st or 2nd, please let us know. Volunteers are able to tent camp on our site at Fort Wilkins Friday & Saturday and all receive a free t-shirt.

4. Last Call to Sign Up Today for the Michigan Tech Expo

Hello Student Organization leaders!  During the weeks of June 22-28 and July 6-12, Summer Youth Programs will be hosting two huge scholarship summer camps: Women in Engineering (WIE) and Engineering Scholars Program (ESP). As part of these camps, we host an expo about all things Michigan Tech. This expo includes representatives from many student organizations, Enterprise teams, and club sports. Additionally, this will serve as the academic expo for the two programs; all departments are welcome to attend.

The purpose of the “Tech Expo” is to give these bright students a feeling of what life is like at Michigan Tech. All of the participants have applied and been accepted to the program based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, and teacher recommendations — they are very driven and interesting young people! During the week of June 23rd, the group is entirely female. 150 students participate each week for a total of 300.

Dates: Wed. June 25 and Wed. July 9

Times: Both Expos are from 4 – 5 PM

1. Khana Khazana Serves Indonesian Cuisine

Khana Khazana at Michigan Tech is going to present Indonesian cuisine on Friday, May 30. Igus Anwar, a Ph.D student in Forest Science will cook Indonesian Yellow Rice (Nasi Kuning) and Indonesian Fruit Punch (Es Teler). “Nasi Kuning” is made from rice cooked with turmeric, coconut milk and some traditional spices. Served with grilled chicken that’s steamed with sweet soy ketchup and Indonesian spices, then grilled. Completed with some fresh vegetables as well. As a dessert is, Es Teler, made from some fresh tropical fruits such as avocado, lychee, pineapple, and watermelon mixed with coconut milk, sweet condensed milk, and pandan paste.

Serving from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM.  Meal is $6  (cash only).  Khana Khazana is going to serve the meals at the trailer, located in front of the J. Robert Van Pelt And John and Ruanne Opie Library.

2.  Outdoor Adventure Program Begins Summer Hours

The Outdoor Adventure Program has transitioned to their summer hours. The rental center is now open from Noon to 5 PM, Monday-Saturday and 6-8 PM on Sundays.

3. Water Safety Instructor Training June 15, 28 & 29

​A 3-day Water Safety Instructor Training course is now being offered through Michigan Tech Community Programs on June 15, 28, and 29. The comprehensive Red Cross WSI program trains instructors in water safety and drowning prevention and provides information needed to plan and conduct courses in the Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program. Cost to register is $260. Deadline to register is May 30.

4. Volunteers Needed for Bridgefest Feast

If you are interested in volunteering for either the Bridgefest Feast (fomally known as Seafood Fest) or the Bridgefest Parade please contact Catherine Burns at cahorsch@mtu.edu. There is a 30 minute meeting next week, Thursday, June 5 at 6:00 PM in the Board Room at the Lakeshore Center to review responsibilities for parade volunteers. The parade volunteers would be needed at 4:30 PM at the starting point of the parade (Church of the Resurrection in Hancock) on Friday, June 13. Volunteers would then be done as soon as the parade is over.

All volunteers are free to wear their organizations logo/tee shirts when they work (assuming the shirts are in good taste). They are also required to wear tennis shoes and a hat while they work. Women should wear their hair back or in a ponytail. All organizations that participate will be included on the Thank You sign (assuming they sign up with me by Sunday, June 8.)

Anyone interested should email cahorsch@mtu.edu with the list of names willing to volunteer, the day and time they would like to work, the organization they represent, and their cell phone number.

1. Khana Khazana Serving Syrian Cuisine

Khana Khazana at Michigan Tech is going to present Syrian cuisine on Friday, May 23rd. Roba Bdeir, a Ph.D student in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology will cook Falafel with Hummus and Fattoush Salad. The food is made from dehydrated chickpeas are soaked overnight and grounded with onions, parsley, cilantro and garlic with Syrian spices. Fried to a rich, golden brown, and served with zesty Hummus dip and Fattoush salad. Homemade apricot juice served with the meal.

We will start serving at 11:00 AM to 1.30:00 PM. The whole meal is $5.95. Khana Khazana is going to serve the meals at the trailer, located in front of the Library.

1. Husky Motors Shuttle Service Summer Hours

Husky Motors shuttle service will operate 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the summer< span class=”Apple-converted-space”> semester beginning Friday, May 2. The shuttle services the Memorial Union to the SDC and through both the Lower and Upper Daniell Heights’, stopping at the bus shelters. Additionally, the shuttle services the Lakeshore Center at the top of the hour. The summer semester shuttle bus schedule can be viewed HERE.

If you have been issued a key to any lock at the University you must return the key before leaving. You cannot hand over a key to your successor, it needs to be re-issued into their name. You are liable for any key issued in your name.

If you do not remember where you received your key, you can return it to Public Safety.

1. Khana Khazana Serving Korean, Indonesian, and Indian Food

Khana Khazana, a weekly international lunch cooked and served by international students, will feature Asian cuisine this Friday, April 25.

Lu Yang, a master student from Geology department, will present Korean Sushi, a traditional Korean food which is made by wrapping steam rice, crab meat, some vegetables with nori; Igus Anwar, a PHD student from Forest Resources and Environmental Science, will cook Rujak, an Indonesian fruit salad, made of various tropical fruits such as pineapple, cucumber, papaya, and mango with peanut sauce and spices; and Qadeer Abdul will present Hyderabadi fish curry, prepared with exotic spices and creamy yogurt. Vegetarian alternatives will be available.

Khana Khazana is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Food Court. A full meal is $6.95, and individual dishes are $2.50 each.

3. Rozsa Center Presents Sing Me to Heaven

Come to the Rozsa Center this Saturday evening, April 26 at 7:30 PM, for an evening of uplifting, joyous and above all beautiful choral music. Join Dr. Jared Anderson, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Michigan Tech, as he conducts conScience: Michigan Tech Chamber Singers and the Michigan Tech Concert Choir in a concert titled “Sing Me to Heaven: A Celebration of Sacred Choral Music.” The choirs of Michigan Tech will explore ideas of heaven through the music of diverse periods and styles.

4. The SDC is Hiring Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors

The recreation department at the SDC is looking for additional Red Cross Certified Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors. Qualifications include Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR.  Duties include monitoring and ensuring the safety of all patrons in the SDC swimming area and enforcing all site rules and regulations. Instructors have opportunities to instruct group and private swim lessons.  Click HERE to apply online.

Welcoming new students and their families is one of the most exciting times on campus. Student organizations are invited to help welcome in-coming students during move-in on Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24. Your group can sign up for one two-hour shift or multiple shifts. This is a great service opportunity for your organization!

• Wear comfortable, closed toe shoes (athletic shoes recommended).
• Volunteers may not recruit or pass out invitations/flyers of any kind.
• Volunteers must help everyone, not just the people you might want to get to know.
• Please remember that some students and families may not want your help. Please be considerate
and ask if they would like assistance first, before grabbing items.
• Arrive 10-15 minutes early to check in at the Wadsworth Hall Reception Desk in order to get to your
assigned location on time for the start of your shift.
• Work with University, Orientation, and Student Life staffs who are also assigned to assist with the
move-in process. We are one big team on move-in day.

1. Khana Khazana Serves Mediteranean Cuisine

Khana Khazana, a weekly international lunch cooked and served by international students, will feature Mediterranean cuisine this Friday, April 18.

The menus are Kidney Beans Salad, a traditional Mediterranean Kidney Bean salad recipe with a light dressing made with olive oil and lemon; Mediterranean Meatballs with Couscous, beef and lentil meatballs serving with olive oil-basil flavored couscous; Tiramisu, meaning “pick me up” or “lift me up”, a popular coffee-flavored Italian dessert. Vegetarian alternatives will be available.

2. Spring Fling Held at the SDC

Ahoy matey, Spring Fling 2014 – Pirates Edition is set to sail into campus Friday, April 18 from noon-4:00 PM at the SDC. 53 Student Organizations will be set up in the hockey arena and Oozeball will take place in the wood gym.  In addition, MUB Board will be doling out provisions of root beer floats and fresh cut french fries. Look out for the caricature artist, inflatables, and a t-shirt tie-dyeing station fer all ye pirate’s entertainment!  Hope to see all of you there!

4. Global City Presents A Village in Bangladesh

For our last “Global City Presents” of the semester, A Village in Bangladesh by S. M. Mizanur Rahman on April 22 at 5:00 pm, EERC 103.

Mizanur will present the development disaster caused by shrimp farming in his village, and how small producers are left out of the economic development of this product. He will also talk about his work in the community and “The Motorcycle Project”, an idea he developed with the goal to provide capital support and planning skills to the local people, which he plans on implementing this summer.

Mizanur grew up in the village of Nurnagar, in the Satkhira district, Bangladesh, before moving to the capital city of Dhaka where he did his undergraduate and master studies. He is now doing his PhD in Environmental and Energy Policy at MTU.

5. Speaker on Sexual Assault and Dating Violence

Michigan Tech is currently in the process of developing a campus/community network to address positive masculinity. Guest speaker, Rus Funk, will discuss the topic of “Developing the Capacity for a Positive Masculinity Program”.  Rus Funk is a long time activist for gender, racial, and sexual justice.  He has been working specifically to combat sexual and domestic violence, racist violence, and homophobia for over 25 years.   He will be giving a presentation on Sexual Assault Prevention on Wednesday, April 23 at 7:00 PM in Fisher 135. The presentation is free and open to the public.

6. Finals Week has Gone to the Dogs

The puppies are back by popular demand.   Unwind and de-stress over at the OAP house and play with the dogs.  On Thursday, April 24 from 5:00-6:30 pm there will be Golden Retrievers from Sigma Tau Gamma and on Tuesday, April 29 from 5:00-6:30 pm, two Dachshunds.

7. Spring Fever Social Event

Are you interested in learning some tennis moves? Join GSG for the Spring Fever social event held at the SDC on April 19 from 12-3 PM!

We have FREE tennis lessons 12-3 PM, but sign up is required. Sign up sheet is found at the Graduate School Front Desk, Admin. Building, 4th floor.

Not really interested in tennis? We also have other fun games (basketball, volleyball, etc…) held at the SDC – Wood Gym.

This event is free for Graduate students and their families.


8. Outdoor Cooking Competition with OAP

The OAP is holding an Outdoor Cooking Competition on April 22. Cooking can begin at 1:00 and the dishes must be completed between 3:00-5:00 PM for judging.  The cost is $5.00 to compete and you can enter as many dishes as you’d like.  All participants will receive a recipe book of the dishes that were entered into the competition.

1. Khana Khazana Will Serve Breakfast April 15

Khana Khazana, a collaboration of international students and Dining Services, will feature breakfast on Tuesday, April 15.
The cooks, Amir Zandnia and Aref Majdara, will cook Haleem, a popular Iranian breakfast stew made from wheat and beef meat. It is slowly simmered for several hours until smooth and silky; Veggie Omelet, an
Iranian style omelet made from eggs, onions and tomatoes; Bread and Cheese, a light sandwich with crème cheese, parsley, radishes and walnuts; Chai, a spiced milk tea from India, The most common are cardamom and ginger. Indian chai produces a warming, soothing effect, acts as a natural digestive aid and gives one a wonderful sense of well-being.
Khana Khazana is served from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union Food Court. A full meal is $5.95, and individual dishes are $2 each.


2. Latin Salsa Party

NOSOTROS with the support of the Graduate Student Governmnet (GSG) is running a fun Latin social. The last Salsa party in Spring semester 2014 is on April 11, at MUB Ballroom A, 8-9 Free Salsa lessons, 9-11 open dance floor. Join the GSG Latin social event, learn how to dance to Latin music, and find new friends! The event is FREE, for all levels, family friendly, and no partner is needed! Just show up!

5.  Film Board Showing, Lone Survivor

This week Film Board is showing Lone Survivor in Fisher 135. It will be shown on Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12 at 5:30, 8:30, and 11:30 pm. Tickets are $3 each and concessions range from 25 cents to 75 cents. Next weekend we’re showing That Awkward Moment.

7. Spring Fling

Spring Fling is always the Friday of Week 13 of  the Spring Semester and this year it is held on April 18 from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Students end the academic year and welcome warmer weather by engaging in activities. Various student organizations participate in this event providing food and entertainment for a campus community eager to relax and have fun before the serious business of final exams begins.

9. Rozsa Center Presents Ecology and Art Lecture Series by John Luther Adams

Called “one of the most original musical thinkers of the new century” (Alex Ross, The New Yorker), John Luther Adams is a composer and environmentalist whose life and work are deeply rooted in the natural world.  Adams, who currently resides in Alaska, will bring his talent and vision to Michigan Tech as a part of the “Ecology and Art Lecture Series” at the Rozsa on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. Two events are planned as a part of this series: Adams will participate in a panel discussion with Michigan Tech environmental science, ecology, poetry, and music professors, and regional environmental science professionals, in the Rozsa Lobby from 10 AM – 11 AM.  This event is free, and the public is invited. He will then present a full lecture on his work and its relationship with the natural sciences at 7:30 PMin the Rozsa Center performance hall. The lecture is also free, and open to the public.
