Student Organizations: Deadline Approaching for K-Day Sign Up

Registration for K-Day is now available! Click HERE to register.  Registration closes on September 5 at 5:00PM.

K-Day, short for Keweenaw Day, is an annual tradition at Michigan Tech held on the Friday of the week of Labor Day.  Each year on K-Day, classes release at noon so our students can celebrate their beautiful surroundings in the Keweenaw Peninsula and learn about ways to get involved and connected at Tech.  K-Day typically sees around 3,500-4,000 students attend, so be sure to check out this amazing event so you don’t miss out!

Transportation from Michigan Tech to the park is provided at no cost.

Student Organization Officers Announcement

Tech Theatre Holds Auditions for Two Plays on August 31 and Sept 1

Michigan Tech Theatre Company will hold auditions next week for two show to be performed in the Fall Semester.

Auditions for both plays will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31 and Thursday Sept. 1, in the McArdle Theatre, second floor of the Walker Building. Call backs will be held as needed.

“Silent Sky” by Lauren Gunderson:

Both Science and fiction, “Silent Sky” blends the discovery of how to measure the universe with the essence of the discover’s life story. Set against the turmoil of the cry for social justice at the beginning of the 20th century, the chronicle of Henrietta Leavitt counterpoints the power of a passion for work with the desire for love and family. Five parts – four women and one man.

Six Performances, October 13-15 and 20-22. Rehearsals will take place Sunday through Friday evenings. All actors will not be required at all rehearsals. No preparation is required for auditions which will include games and reading from the script.

“The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui” by Bertolt Brecht.

This dark comedy, set in ’30s Chicago, tells the story of a strongman’s rise to the head of the Cauliflower Turst that has many parallels around the world today.

Written as a parable about Hitler’s rise to power, the story applies to any situation in which a charismatic leader exploits the economic fears of the little guy to seize more and more power.

There’s jazz, gun-molls, shady backroom deals and lots of dark laughs.

There are parts for three or more women (up to six possible) and 19 or more men (up to 30 possible … one singing part—baritone preferred). There are also two gender-irrelevant roles.

No monologues required for audition, just come ready to read and dressed for movement. No previous experience required. There will be three performances Nov. 10-12.

Keweenaw Color Run Seeking Volunteers

It’s getting close to the beginning of the fall semester and the Keweenaw Color Run committee would like to welcome all students and faculty alike back to tech. As we enter into the school year, we would like to remind everyone that in less than a month, on September 18th, hundreds of people will be finishing the 2nd Annual Keweenaw Color Run. Want to help make this event awesome? Well then you’re in luck! The 2nd Annual Keweenaw Color Run is looking for volunteers. To sign up to volunteer please visit: www.volunteer.keweenawcolor.com

Volunteers will be provided with free food and beverages the day of the event and will get a free event T-shirt. Husky Motors New On-Line Reservation System

Husky Motors introduced its new on-line reservation system on May 16. Now, as a new school year approaches, we would like to provide you with some reminders, helpful tips and updates based on customer feedback. The original article is linked for those who may have missed it.

All who reserve vehicles or will be driving them must be registered in the reservation system. So, if you plan to reserve or drive a Husky Motors Vehicle, take a moment now to register using this link—it’s easy to do.

Here are a few things you should know about the reservation system:

Reservations can be made, changed or cancelled on-line, 24/7
All reservations are dispatched through our outdoor key kiosk, which is located on the east entrance of the Facilities Management Building. The key kiosk provides 24/7 access to your vehicle reservation.
As requested by our users, we have installed a sun shade to our outdoor key kiosk. This will help shade the kiosk screen during peak sunshine hours.

When picking up and returning your reserved vehicle, they can be found and returned to the lot designated for Husky Motors vehicles (North East of the Facilities Management Building). Also, if leaving a personal vehicle during your reservation period, it must be parked in the lot designated Husky Motors vehicles.
Reservations must be picked up and returned within one hour of the reservation time, before or after the scheduled time (a two-hour window).

Vehicle keys must be picked up and returned to the kiosk by the individual listed on the reservation.
Vehicles should be returned with a full tank of fuel and free of any debris or trash—another reservation may start soon after your return.

Husky Motors values your business and appreciates all feedback provided. Utilize our new on-line system to provide reservation and/or vehicle specific feedback.

PaintU Party on Walker Lawn Hosted by MUB Board, 8/24

That’s right, PaintU is back to kick off the school year in style! Flashing lights, pulse pounding music, and copious amounts of neon paint; it’s going to be the ultimate Orientation Week event! Now we know you want to show up to this party looking super fly, but we highly recommend wearing something you don’t mind getting blasted with paint.

Fellowships for Study on Scandinavia

The American-Scandinavian Foundation is offering fellowships American students, scholars, professionals and artists for study and/or research in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden.

Fellowships of up to $23,000 are intended to support an academic year-long stay, and priority is given to students at the graduate level who need to spend time at foreign academic or research institutions. Grants of up to $5,000 are considered more suitable for shorter research visits, both on the graduate or post-doctoral level. Funding is available to candidates in all fields.

Ride of Silence Event to Honor those Injured While Biking

Michigan Tech’s SWEAT program and Bike Initiative Keweenaw will be partnering with local law enforcement to host a Ride of Silence in the Houghton/Hancock area on Aug. 24. This will be one of several Ride of Silence events taking place that day around the U.P.

The event will take place at 6 p.m. (arrive by 5:45) Wednesday, Aug. 24 and will begin in Hancock, under the Lift Bridge (near the Ramada). It will be 19 miles at a 10-12 mph pace. Bring water, comfortable clothing and a helmet

The event is being held to honor people who have been injured or killed while biking, particularly in several recent tragic events in Michigan this year, and to raise awareness on all of the users that share the road.

The Ride of Silence is open to everyone, but helmets are required. Law enforcement will provide an escort throughout the 19 mile ride, from Hancock to Chassell and back. Contact us with any questions.

Move-In Volunteer Participation Expectations:
•    Remember that you are representing your Student Organization and Michigan Technological University. First impressions are very important to new students and their family members.
•    Wear apparel that represents your Student Organization or Michigan Tech only.
•    Wear clothing that is neat and appropriate (no holes, no hats, and no sunglasses are permitted).
•    Wear comfortable, closed toe shoes (athletic shoes recommended).
•    Volunteers may not recruit or pass out invitations/flyers of any kind.
•    Volunteers must help everyone, not just the people you might want to get to know.
•    Please remember that some students and families may not want your help. Please be considerate and ask if they would like assistance first, before grabbing items.
•    Arrive 10-15 minutes early to check in at the Wadsworth Hall Reception Desk in order to get to your assigned location on time for the start of your shift.
•    Work with University, Orientation, and Housing and Residential Life staffs who are also assigned to assist with the move-in process. We are one big team on move-in day.

It’s back. Get ready for the 2nd Annual Keweenaw Color Run! This event is a time for students, community members, and visitors to come together to celebrate the colorful and diverse community in the Keweenaw! **Distance**

**Wave Start**
For the safety and experience of all participants, we will be instituting a waved start. Please register for the wave that best describes your goal. Wave hopping will be allowed on race day, however hopping into Wave 1 will not entitile you to Chip Timing.

**Chip Timing**
By popular demand, we will offer chip timing to runners who REGISTER in Wave 1. No other waves will get a chip time. This allows us to keep the fun, no stress atmosphere of the event

Sunset Cruise Tickets for the August 4th Cruise Available

There are tickets available to students for the Copper Harbor Sunset Cruise on the evening of Thursday, August 4. Tickets are $5.00 per person with your student ID. Family is welcome to attend with a student but must also pay the $5.00 fee.

SDC Multi Purpose Room Closed July 26-August 7

The SDC multipurpose room is closed now through August 7 for floor refinishing.

The wood gym will be available for open recreation activities that were scheduled in the multipurpose room with one exception. The wood gym will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 3 from noon to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. for basketball camp and no open recreation will be available during these times.

Seminar to Focus on Infectious Diseases

Kelly Kamm, a post-doctoral fellow in epidemiology at SUNY-Buffalo will present “Low Technology Interventions to Prevent Infectious Diseases in High-risk Populations,” at 1 p.m. Monday (July, 25) in Dow 875.

Globally, 30 percent of deaths each year are due to communicable, maternal, perinatal or nutritional causes. Additionally, the large number of non-fatal episodes of these conditions has long-term health and economic impacts on individuals and communities.

The distribution of these conditions is based on individual, environmental and societal factors. Isolated, rural, poor or institutionalized populations often bear the burden of infectious diseases but have limited personal or political power to affect change.

Low technology solutions, such as access to adequate volumes of safe drinking water, functional sanitation facilities, improvements in hand hygiene and dietary changes can reduce the incidence or severity of many infectious diseases.

Using examples from studies in high-risk populations in Kenya, Bangladesh and the U.S., Kamm will discuss developing feasible, scalable interventions to improve hand hygiene, as well as the need for monitoring and evaluating the programs to determine the extent of behavior change and health impact in the target population.

Chalking Competition

Student Activities and Wellness Programs are teaming up and bringing you unique event: Chalking Competition, “What you are grateful for.” You don’t have to be Picasso, you just need to want to have some fun with sidewalk chalk and let your creativity flow. We will be gathering at the Husky statue on July 21 at 1:00 PM. You will have 1 hour and 15 minutes to create your artwork and then the judges will determine the work of art that most represents the subject, “What are you grateful for.” The winner will receive a Prize!

• No profanity or inappropriate content
• You can chalk as an individual or you can team up but you must be a student to win the prize
• Chalk will be provided
• You can finish at anytime within the hour and fifteen minute time frame (1:15-2:30)
• Chalking will end at 2:30 so that the judges have enough time to review, ask questions, and hand out the prize.

This event is meant to inspire community and well being within ourselves and as a shared concept for others. Spectators are much encouraged but please be respectful and encouraging to all participants.

The rain date for this event will be July 28, 1:00 PM, at the Husky statue.

Sunset Cruise #2 Sign Up

Sign-up for the second Sunset Cruise on Thursday, August 4 will take place during the chalking competition on Thursday, July 21. We will start taking sign-ups once the chalking competition is underway around 1:15.

The cost is $5.00 per person with your student ID. students may purchase tickets for their spouse and children as well.

CDI to Host Dialogue on Realities of Violence

In light of the tragic killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota and the five Police Officers-Brent Thompson, Senior Cpl. Lorne Ahrens, Sgt. Michael Smith, Michael Krol and Patrick Zamarripa, who were killed in Dallas last week, Michigan Tech’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion invites the community to engage in a meaningful dialogue about the realities of violence plaguing the nation.

The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. today (July 15) in the Hamar House.

Looking to expand your outdoor skills? Look no further. The OAP is offering a Leave No Trace (LNT) Trainer Course here in the Keweenaw in partnership with the Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers.

This two day course assists participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for disseminating these low impact skills.

Trainer Courses are designed for educators, guides, agency employees and other outdoor professionals. Successful graduates of the Trainer Course gain skills to teach Leave No Trace techniques and ethics to their clients, friends and family.

Course dates are July 7-8 and the cost is $125 including an overnight camping trip the night of July 7. This course is open to anyone age 18 and over—students, staff/faculty, or community members. There is limited space in this course, so sign up now. To register, visit the site.

For those looking for a shorter experience, the OAP and the Keweenaw Land Trust will be hosting an Awareness Workshop with the Traveling Trainers on Saturday, July 9 at the Boston Pond Nature Area on US-41, just before you reach Airpark Blvd.

This event will include some education about LNT Principles and how to incorporate those into our activities as well as a clean-up activity at Boston Pond. This event is free and open to the public, youth are encouraged to attend with an adult. Chocolay Raptor Center Visits Campus with their Resident Birds

Please join us for a very special presentation by the Chocolay Raptor Center of Marquette, MI on their raptor rehab program. They will be bringing live program birds with them and answering questions after the 1 hour presentation to be held at 1:00 p.m on Thursday, June 30. The event will be located on the lawn between the ChemSci and EERC buildings and is free to attend.

Confidential and Anonymous HIV Testing on Campus

In accordance with National HIV testing day, the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department will be on Michigan Tech’s campus on Monday, June 27 from 1:00-3:00 pm offering free HIV testing.  Testing will take place at the Center for Diversity and Inclusion in the conference room (garden level).  Testing is free to all students, faculty, staff, and community, and is confidential, anonymous, and efficient.  The performed test is called Alere and only takes 20 minutes to complete with a simple finger prick. 

Appointments will be available in 30 minute increments from 1:00-3:00 pm and can be made by emailing wmborosk@mtu.edu.
