Indian Cuisine_June 3, 2016Khana Khazana Serving Indian Cuisine

Indian food will be served at Khana Khazana in the Food Trailer in the MUB Circle.

Serving will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 3. The menu features Mixed Vegetable Pakora—crispy Indian fritters served as appetizers, Chicken Butter Masala— chicken breasts marinated and cooked in butter with tomato curry, Matar Paneer Masala—Indian cottage cheese and green peas in tomato curry and Badam Shake—a milk dessert with almond and saffron.

The cost is $6.95 for the full meal.

Husky Tae Kwon Do Sponsoring Summer Camp

The Husky Tae Kwon Do club and Big Water Tae Kwon Do of Calumet are co-hosting the 2016 American Chung Do Kwon Summer camp in Chassell, MI June 24 – 26. Come and learn martial arts techniques from aikido, jujitsu, and tae kwon do. No prior experience needed.

Guatemalan Kite Flying at McLain State Park on Saturday

Students in Lisa Gordillo’s (VPA), Outdoor Sculpture class will fly kites inspired by the Guatemalan “barrilete.”

The event will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at McLain State Park.

This is a free event and open to the public. All are welcome to join us to celebrate.

After the event, kites will be on display in the Rozsa Lobby through the end of June.

Lot Closed Due to Painting

Lot 15W will be closed tomorrow (June 3) for painting. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Please make other parking arrangements if needed.


Two Short Courses Offered in Engines

Two short courses (2.5 days in duration) are being offered this month.

Both courses include laboratory components with a format that mixes traditional lecture and group discussion with hands-on experiments conducted in powertrain test-cells and through driving vehicles on the road. The courses will be available to all faculty, staff, non degree seeking students, Michigan Tech graduate students and undergraduate seniors. Both courses are one credit.

Information about the courses can be found when searching courses on Banweb. MEEM 5990 Section 49 and MEEM 5990 Section 50.

Course descriptions are as follows:

Diesel Engines-Their Combustion and Operation (June 15-17)

Topics will be covered through a mix of lecture, hands-on experimentation, group discussions and group data analysis. Both courses will be delivered from the Michigan Tech Advanced Power Systems Research Center located near the Houghton County Airport. Transportation to and from campus will be provided each day. Lunch will be provided on Thursday and Friday.

SI Engines-Their Operation & Control (June 22-24)

Topics will be covered through a mix of lecture, hands-on experimentation, group discussions and group data analysis.

Registration is now open, search for MEEM 5990 Section 49 and MEEM 5990 Section 50. Students are welcome to register for both, or just one. There are no pre-requisites, but familiarity with thermodynamics and IC engine cycles will be helpful.

During the weeks of June 19-25 and June 26-July 2, Summer Youth Programs will be hosting several major scholarship summer camps: Women in Engineering (WIE), Engineering Scholars Program (ESP), and Women in Computer Science (WICS).  As part of these camps, we host an expo about all things Michigan Tech.  This expo includes representatives from many student organizations, campus departments, Enterprise teams, and club sports.

The purpose of the “Tech Expo” is to give these bright students a feeling of what life is like at Michigan Tech.  All of the participants have applied and been accepted to the program based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, and teacher recommendations — they are very driven and interesting young people! WIE and WICS are entirely female camps (a total of around 180 women), and ESP welcome 150 students (both male and female).

 

Dates:  Tuesday. June 21 and Tuesday. June 28

Times: Both Expos are from 4 – 5 PM

Location:  MUB Ballroom

Memorial Union Closed Monday

The Memorial Union will be closed Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. The building will reopen at 7 a.m. Tuesday, May 31.


 

Museum Open Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend

By popular demand, the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum will be open Saturday, May 28 of Memorial Day Weekend. The museum previously announced they would be closed over the holiday weekend. They received several inquiries from out of town visitors regarding if the museum would be open and now they can visit the Keweenaw and see the “gem” of Michigan Tech on Saturday. The museum will be closed as planned on Sunday and Memorial Day.


 

Bookstore, University Images Closed for Inventory

The Campus Bookstore in the Memorial Union Building will be closed for inventory starting Thursday, May 26 thru Tuesday, May 31. University Images in the Student Development Complex will be closed for inventory beginning Saturday, May 28 thru Tuesday May 31. Both stores will reopen on Wednesday, June 1.

Center for Pre-College Outreach Offices Move to Wadsworth for Summer

 

The Center for Pre-College Outreach office will move to their summer location on the forth floor of Wadsworth Hall today. Summer Youth Programs begin in June and will continue until August. The offices will house all CPCO operations including SYP, Mind Trekkers and College Access.

Parade of Nations 2016 Theme: Passport to the World

 

“Passport to the World” will be the theme of the 2016 Parade of Nations, scheduled for September 17. The 27th annual Parade of Nations is a celebration of the international heritage and flavor of our community.

It kicks off with a parade from Hancock to the Dee Stadium in Houghton. A cultural festival featuring food, crafts and entertainment from many nations follows the parade.

The headline act, BreakSK8, will skate in the parade and perform at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on the Michigan Tech campus that evening. BreakSK8 is a professional jam-skating team that likes to push the limits of what can be done on rollerblades. They have toured the world and appeared in films.

Parade of Nations is sponsored by Michigan Tech, Finlandia, and community businesses and residents.


Tech Unveils 2016-17 Hockey Schedule

 

Four series against teams from last year’s NCAA tournament, a trip to the 52nd Great Lakes Invitational and 14 games against in-state rivals are among the highlights of the 2016-17 Michigan Tech hockey schedule, which was unveiled yesterday.

The nationally-ranked Huskies open their 96th season of hockey with a non-conference series at former WCHA foe Minnesota Duluth Oct. 1-2, renewing a rivalry that dates back to 1952-53.

Tech jumps right into league action the following weekend (Oct. 7-8) to start the defense of the MacNaughton Cup with a road test against Minnesota State before returning to the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena for a two-game set with Alabama Huntsville on Oct. 14-15

The new WCHA playoff format begins this season and will feature home-site games for the duration of the conference tournament. The first round and semifinals will each be best-of-three series at the higher seed, while the WCHA Championship Game will be a one-game, winner-takes-all matchup at the highest remaining seed.

Hockey Spring Carnival Tonight

 

Michigan Tech will host a Spring Hockey Carnival at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Friday, May 20, from 6-8 p.m. The event is free and open to people of all ages and will feature food, games for kids, raffle and door prizes, photo opportunities with the MacNaughton Cup and autographs with Huskies players and staff.

Youth are encouraged to bring their own hockey sticks to play floor hockey with Michigan Tech players. The Huskies will also run skill sessions, which will include a chance to shoot against Tech goaltenders.

A bounce house, video games on the arena’s video board, music and Tech’s mascot, Blizzard T. Husky, will also be part of the evening.

The free food offerings are hot dogs, popcorn, pop and bottled water. Other food options will be available for purchase. Raffle prizes include University Images gift cards, a free week at Michigan Tech Hockey School, sticks signed by the Huskies and family ticket packages.

Tickets to watch the Huskies defend their 2015-16 WCHA regular season championship will be on sale during the event. More information on season tickets will be released next week.

Cuisine of Thailand will be featured at the next Khana Khazana from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 13 in the food trailer in the MUB Circle.

The menu features:

  • Khoa Mun Kai Tod (fried chicken with ginger garlic rice) — one of the most common street foods in Thailand
  • Ajad (sweet and sour salad) — a popular side dish salad with cucumber, bell pepper, onion and cilantro with sweet and sour dressing

A Sneak Peak at the 2016-2017 Rozsa VPA Arts Season

We have come to the close of another arts season at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made it a success.

So much was new this year from the World Without Ice climate change meditation/film/sound installation exhibit in McArdle Theatre to the cutting-edge new Project Learning Lab experimental art space in the Rozsa gallery b. From the beautiful collaboration of the Minnesota Ballet’s Nutcracker with the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, with new discount Family Ticket Packages that brought so many more families out to enjoy a night at the theater, to the wildly interactive adventure “Intergalactic Nemesis: Target Earth” live-action graphic novel. It was a vibrant, thoughtful and above all, enjoyable season.
We are now in the process of gearing up for the 2016-2017 Rozsa Visual and Performing Arts season and here is a taste of what we have in store.

New Museum Website Debuts

The A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum has released a newly transformed web site.
The museum’s first collection of information accessible through the World Wide Web went public in the mid-1990s. The last complete redesign of the museum web site was in 2005. The just-released transformed museum web site is fully compatible for tablets and smart phones.
The museum welcomes all visitors. Admission fee is waived for Michigan Tech students as well as Michigan Tech employees and their professional guests.


Husky Motors Introduces New On-line Reservation System

Effective Monday, May 16 all vehicle reservations will be made through our new on-line reservation system.Husky Motors has partnered with FleetCommander to improve the process of renting vehicles. No more picking up your rental vehicle on Friday for a Sunday rental. No more calling in your reservation or walking down to the motor pool to see if a vehicle is available. No more questioning if your request was received.The process has been streamlined and improved for customer satisfaction. Customers will be able to make, adjust and cancel their reservation on-line, 24/7. Vehicles will be available 24/7 via the outdoor Key Kiosk for convenient pick-up and return. The Key Kiosk is located on the east entrance of the Facilities Management building.

Summer Hours on Campus

 

Starting Monday, May 2, the University shifts to its summer schedule.

The general hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. All offices must be staffed during these hours.
Employees are expected to fulfill their usual full-time or part-time obligations.

Your actual work schedule must be approved by your supervisor. Regular office hours resume on Monday, August 15.


Volunteers Needed for Disaster Drill

 

A mock disaster drill will be held at Michigan Tech on Tuesday, May 10, and the University’s Department of Public Safety and Police Services is looking for 55 volunteers to play the role of “victims” during the exercise. Faculty, staff, students and community members are all welcome to volunteer.

“Volunteer actors are very important to improving the realistic nature of the exercise and helping make it even more effective for the emergency response personnel who plan to participate,” Jon Stone, a crisis management consultant who is running the drill, explains.

Shuttle Service Adds Stop

 

In order to accommodate summer PE courses, as well as offer students and staff the opportunity to use the University shuttle to the Portage Lake Golf Course, Transportation Services has added a stop at the PLGC for the summer.

Parking Spaces to be Painted

Transportation Services is currently painting the parking space lines around campus. Be prepared for partial lot closures to allow the painting to be completed. If you should arrive in a partially painted parking lot, utilize any available freshly painted parking spaces that are not within a barricaded area so that the painting crew can access the unpainted areas. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If there are any questions contact Transportation Services at 7-1441.


Memorial Union Commons Remodeling

 

Due to the renovation of the Memorial Union Building retail dining to a fresh quick service bistro and the remodeling of the Memorial Union Keweenaw Commons with a Northwoods feel, the ground floor of the MUB will be under construction this summer.

The Food Court and Keweenaw Commons seating area will be closed following normal operating hours this Friday (April 29). 
The ground floor hallway leading to the elevator and restrooms will remain open with the exception of the week of June 3 through 8.
Retail Dining will be offered through the Dining Services trailer which will be parked near the Husky Statue on the campus mall. The operating hours will be from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Library Cafe will remain in operation serving it’s current menu. The Cafe hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The first and second floors of the MUB, including the catering operations, the bookstore, meeting rooms, guest rooms, student activities and student organization offices and the Memorial Union offices, will remain open throughout the summer.

Transportation Services Updated Summer Shuttle Schedule

Transportation Services shuttle service will operate 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the summer semester beginning Monday, May 2.  The shuttle services the Memorial Union Building to the SDC and through both the Lower and Upper Daniell Heights, stopping at the bus shelters.  Additionally, the shuttle services the Lake Shore Center at the top of the hour.  The summer semester shuttle bus schedule can be viewed at http://www.mtu.edu/facilities/parking/campus-maps/Shuttle%20Service.pdf .

City of Houghton Updated Summer Shuttle Schedule

As of May 2, 2016, the City of Houghton will be operating their summer shuttle schedule.  They will be running the on-demand service MondayFriday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Please call 482-6092 to make a reservation.  They will also be running the downtowner shuttle service MondayFriday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Please see the link below for more information and rates.

Testing of Portage Lake Lift Bridge planned to finish week of May 2

 

Nighttime tests of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge will continue during the week of May 2 as part of ongoing maintenance work. The testing will likely result in brief delays for motorists.

 

The contractor for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will suspend test lifts after 3 p.m. today to avoid traffic impacts during Michigan Technological University graduation weekend. The contractor will resume after 7 p.m. Monday, performing test lifts of the bridge span that require brief closures of the bridge to traffic.

 

Motorists should expect delays of 10 to 15 minutes, roughly equivalent to a standard bridge lift for marine traffic. Test lifts will be limited to taking place between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Traffic will be allowed to clear and resume normal flow between test lifts.

 

The $8.4 million project involves upgrades and preventive maintenance on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock. The project started in mid-December 2014 and was scheduled to be completed by the end of April. Recent weather interfered with project completion; dry weather conditions are needed to conduct bridge span balance testing. The project is now set to be completed the week of May 2.

SDC Summer Building Hours will begin May 1 and continue until August 21.


City of Houghton Dumpsters Available

STUDENT OR
Dumpsters will be available for students to put their “junk” in starting this week.  The dates are April 27 to May 3rd.  The locations are (2): Lot 21, off of Garnet and under the parking deck downtown.  There will be three separate dumpsters, one for regular junk, one for metal and one for e-waste. Please note that these dumpsters are NOT for regular household garbage.

Student Organization – End of Year Checklist

As we wrap up another great year, please take care of the following items before leaving campus for the summer:

  • Update your organization roster on Involvement Link with new officers if your organization recently held elections.  Officers receive important communications throughout the summer regarding events, volunteer opportunities, funding, training, re-registration and more.  Student Activities uses the titles of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer to create mailing lists, so please make sure your officers are labeled accordingly.
  • If your organization members are graduating and have University keys to rooms or buildings, please have them return the keys to Public Safety and Police Services or to the appropriate departmental coordinator.  If your members have keys to the Memorial Union Building rooms, please return them to the Manager’s Office, MUB 101.
  • It would be a good idea to verify with your organization’s advisor that they are available to be your advisor for next school year.  Be sure to update Involvement Link with any new changes.  Let me know if you need assistance in locating a new advisor.
  • If your organization has elected a new treasurer, be sure to transfer ownership of your banking account to the new officer.  It’s more difficult to do this once your former treasurer leaves campus.
  • Your mailbox in MUB 106 must be emptied out by Friday, April 29. Student Activities staff will be cleaning out the mailboxes the following week.
  • Your swipe access to MUB 106 will expire at the end of the semester.  If you would like access for the summer months, please email your request toactivities@mtu.edu and include your name, university email address, organization name, and your position within your organization.
  • Please be sure that all outstanding balances with the USG and other university departments are reconciled before you leave for the summer.  USG reimbursement requests were due on April 11.  Your USG allocation must be used by the end of the school year in accordance to the USG constitution.  There will be no reimbursements during the summer months.
  • If your organization purchased or acquired new equipment this academic year, please update your inventory list on Involvement Link.  If you purchased equipment that has a replacement value of $500 or more, contact me for tagging instructions.
  • Start thinking now about your organization’s participation in two great Fall events – K-Day on Friday, September 9, and Parade of Nations on Saturday, September 17.  More information to follow on K-Day in a couple of weeks; and information on the 2016 Parade of Nations can be found athttp://www.mtu.edu/international/events-programs/parade-nations/.
  • Mark your calendars for the Fall Student Success Summit to be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016!  A day-long conference for students is being planned as a collaborative effort between various campus departments.  The project is lead by the Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success.

Rozsa’s Project Learning Lab “gallery b” Presents Extraxtion

The Rozsa Center and The Department of Visual And Performing Art present the final 2015-2016 exhibit of Sculpture and 3D Design students, who will host an exhibit titled “Extraxtion,” with a public reception for their work in Rosza “gallery b,” the Rozsa’s experimental Project Learning Lab gallery space, this Thursday, April 21st, from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM.


 

Michigan Tech Choirs Present “Songs of the Earth”

Join the choirs of Michigan Tech as they present the final Rozsa event of the season, a concert entitled Songs of the Earth! Songs of the Earth celebrates Earth Day 2016 (Friday, April 22) with music that is inspired by nature or that includes themes relating to the natural world. The show will be at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, April 23, at 7:30 PM.

Tickets for the Songs of the Season concert are on sale now, $13 for adults, $5 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Sign up to be a Maker Coach for the new Makerspace in the MUB

Are you interested in helping out in the new Makerspace in the MUB Basement? We are looking for motivated volunteers with an interest in “making” who would be willing to volunteer their time (approx. 2-3 hours per week) to help staff the space during the school year as a “Maker Coach”. As a Coach, you will earn access to use the space outside of regular operating hours and have an opportunity to help shape the space as it continues to develop in the future.

Coaches should have an interest in helping others learn and be excited about creating an inclusive culture of “making” here at Michigan Tech. No previous knowledge of machinery or tools is required, but you should be interested in learning more about the tools used in the space. As a moderator of the space, you will learn to quickly identify unsafe practices and advise users on how they can use the tools safely. Coaches will also share personal knowledge and experiences to help others with what they are working on. Your role will be vital for smooth operation of the new Makerspace, and will improve the experience for Makers all across campus.

WHAT IS THE MAKERSPACE EXACTLY?

Over the past few years, many students, faculty, and staff have noticed the lack of an inclusive and accessible space for members of the Michigan Tech community from any background with any level of experience to tinker, create, work on personal projects, and prototype their ideas. We need a space where artists and engineers, hackers and designers, and all members of the Tech Community can come together to make cool things and bring their ideas to life. Version 1 of this space will be opening Fall 2016 in the MUB Basement with a focus on creating a welcoming environment for you, regardless of your background, department, or level of experience.

This initial version of the space will include everything from arts and craft supplies, basic hand tools, power tools, equipment for woodworking and electronics, 3D printing and designing, and more. It will include areas for collaboration and ideation, as well as prototyping and making. As the space opens and progresses, it will continually be reevaluated in order to provide the best experience for those using it. If a tool or supply that you think is important is missing, the Maker Coaches will evaluate those needs and determine which new pieces to add. One of the coolest pieces about the new Makerspace is that is one big work in progress, with great opportunities for you and the rest of the Michigan Tech community to make an impact and create an awesome space for all Makers here at Michigan Tech.

Michigan Tech 22nd annual Student Leadership Awards Winners

University President Glenn Mroz bestowed the President’s Award for Leadership on Terrianna Bradley, a third-year Environmental Engineering major. In presenting the award, Mroz cited Bradley’s internships with Prein and Newhof and her restructuring the Tech chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers as its president.

Mroz said Bradley coordinated the Society of Intellectual Sisters Bra Show for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, designed a new flood prediction model for the Consumers Product Manufacturing Enterprise and attending Leadershape.

The Provost’s Award for Leadership was presented to Sarah Harttung. Her department, Forest Resources and Environmental Science, describes her as “an exemplary student whose academic prowess extends well beyond the classroom.”

Harttung has been involved in five research labs, pursued a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship for two summers exploring multiple facets of climate change and is working toward publishing papers from both projects.

The Vice President for Student Affairs and Advancement Award went to Rachel Chard, a Business Management major with a concentration in Supply Chain and Operations. Chard is Events and Programming Leader for Career Ambassadors, a member of the Circle K community service and leadership organization and is the in-arena emcee for Michigan Tech Hockey games.

Other individual award winners were; Exceptional Leadership in Student Governance—Chelsea Nikula, Exceptional Enthusiasm as a Student Leader—Madison Diehl, Student Employee of the Year—Alyssa Vinckier, Rising Star of the Year—Rachel Kolb, Outstanding Future Alumnus—Ian Greenland and Outstanding Future Alumna— Olivia Munoz.

The Claire M. Donovan Award, presented by Blue Key Honor Society to recognize a member of the faculty, staff or student body for outstanding service and contribution was awarded to Thomas Wood (MSE).

The Most Improved Student Organization was awarded to the National Society of Black Engineers, the Student Organization of the Year was presented to the Forestry Club and Student Organization Advisor of the Year to Ariana Johnson, advisor to the Dance Team. The Keweenaw Color Run was tabbed Exceptional Program of the Year and Delta Upsilon’s work on the West Houghton Ice Rink Project was named Exceptional Community Service Project.

Award recipients who received awards at previous ceremonies were recognized. Sara Alian was named Exceptional Graduate Student Leader, Lauren Schaefer named Exceptional Graduate Student Scholar and Tarun Dam (Chem) and Yun Hang Hu (MSE) were named Exceptional Graduate Mentors.

Undergraduate Research Expo winners were, first place—Gina Testa, second place—Hannah Marti and third place—Olivia Ingram. The Greek man of the Year was Charles Hubbard and Greek Woman of the Year was Dallas Linville.

There was a tie for the Percy Julian Award, which went to Luyao Li and Neffertia Tyner.


 

2016 Spring Commencement

Michigan Tech’s 2016 Spring Commencement will take place at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 30. The ceremony will be held in the MacInnes Student Ice Arena of the Student Development Complex.

Carrie Hessler-Radelet, Peace Corps director, will deliver the commencement address. Hessler-Radelet is the 19th director of the Peace Corps, a position she has held since June 2014.

Prior to that, she served as the agency’s acting director and deputy director from 2010-14. Hessler-Radelet holds a master’s of science in health policy and management from the Harvard School of Public Health and a bachelor’s of arts in political science from Boston University. She and her husband have two children.

Graduating student Drew Markel will deliver the student address. Markel, a Rochester, Michigan native, graduates having double-majored in biomedical and mechanical engineering. He will join the Kimberly-Clark Corporation this summer and work in Family Care products.

More than 960 students will take part in the ceremony. Doors open at 8:30 a.m., and students are expected to be present and prepared at 9:45 a.m.

A seating chart of the graduates and additional information is available online on the Commencement web page.

Prior to the ceremony, the official ROTC commissioning will take place at 7:30 a.m. in the Rozsa Center. A public commissioning will also occur during commencement.

Geoseminar — Rudiger Escobar Wolf

The next Geoseminar will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday, April 22 in Dow 610. Rudiger Escobar Wolf will present “Surface Displacement Monitoring Using Digital Photogrammetry: Examples From Transportation Corridors.” All are welcome.

The discussion will be illustrated with examples of natural and artificial surface movement monitoring, including rock slopes, permafrost terrain and retaining walls. The examples Wolf will discuss come from ongoing work funded by the US Department of Transportation, in collaboration with colleagues within Michigan Tech, the Michigan Tech Research Institute and other partners.

Model UN at Michigan Tech Looking for New Members

Model UN is an academic simulation of the United Nations where participants (delegates) role play as representatives of a country, organization or a body (Amnesty, NATO, EU etc.).

A Model UN brings in a lot of skills that employers look at these days. These skills include but are not limited to; problem solving skills, critical thinking, creativity, people management, coordinating with others, emotional intelligence, judgement and decision making skills under crisis situations, negotiations and cognitive flexibility.

In order to bring this into the Tech culture, the aim is making a student organization of the same and having a Model UN conference at Michigan Tech on an annual basis.

This would not only imbibe various skills that are of particular importance in today’s job seeking environment, but would also develop one as an individual and help them see what’s going on in the world and in what ways could the world’s problems be rectified.

As this club is yet in its budding stage, we are looking for an advisor who has Model UN experience or knowledge regarding the geopolitical scenario who could guide us in our endeavor to make this event happen at Tech.

We are also looking to fill the position of Secretary for the Model UN Association at Michigan Tech and request all interested faculty and students alike send an email if you are interested to Sriram at sparavas@mtu.edu.

Rotaract_CB_2016

Tickets Still Available for the Annual Charity Ball

You don’t want to miss this exciting opportunity to dress up and go to the Ball! The Houghton-Hancock Rotaract Club presents the Phantom of the Opera Charity Ball on Saturday, April 16 from 8:00 – Midnight in the Rosza Lobby. All ticket proceeds go to 31 Backpacks, a local non-profit organization that provides meals to kids from low income families. Kids are getting free breakfasts, lunches and snacks at school during the week, but what happens on the weekends? They go hungry. 31 Backpacks’ goal is to address this issue. They are sending home backpacks full of food every Friday for those students, who have been identified by administrators, as being in need. Event Details:

  • Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available
  • DJ, and Photo-booth
  • Live performances by the swing dance club and the MTU dance team!
  • Awards will be given to best-dressed theme outfits

Band above stage shot17th Annual Don Keranen Memorial Jazz Concert Friday

Nine years of great jazz and counting! The 17th Annual Don Keranen Memorial Concert has a wide variety of jazz to suit almost every palette. The Keranen legacy is very much in evidence in both the Research & Development Big Band and in the Jazz Lab Band. Don was always at the cutting edge of incorporating new and interesting jazz arrangements in his concert programs.

The R&D Big Band will perform Little Sunflower with the addition of interesting sound effects and a woodwind quintet. The Jazz Lab Band will feature vocalists Kattie Riutta and Kevin Rocheleau singing Used To Rule The World, and Diggin’ On James Brown, respectively.

Join Jazz Studies Program Director Mike Irish and the Michigan Tech Jazz ensembles for the Don Keranen Memorial Jazz Concert at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts this Friday, April 15, 7:30 PM.

Interpretation offers a manner of connecting people personally to meanings associated with scientific observations, thereby affording scientists the opportunity to communicate complex ideas to varied audiences. This presentation presents on the challenges and successes in interpreting abiotic nature for the broader public and explores the concept of tangible and intangible connections.

Model UN at Michigan Tech Looking for New Members

In order to bring this into the Tech culture, the aim is making a student organization of the same and having a Model UN conference at Michigan Tech on an annual basis.

This would not only imbibe various skills that are of particular importance in today’s job seeking environment, but would also develop one as an individual and help them see what’s going on in the world and in what ways could the world’s problems be rectified.

As this club is yet in its budding stage, we are looking for an advisor who has Model UN experience or knowledge regarding the geopolitical scenario who could guide us in our endeavor to make this event happen at Tech.

We are also looking to fill the position of Secretary for the Model UN Association at Michigan Tech and request all interested faculty and students alike send an email if you are interested in joining the club in any form—advisor, executive committee or regular member.

Registration for the Doghouse has been extended to NOON this Friday, April 15. All divisions are a go and are guaranteed at least 3 games. We’re just hoping to get a few more signups between now and then. ALL forms, signature, and payment are due Friday at NOON. No more extensions!
The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, April 23. Check-in will be from 8:00-8:45 a.m. Games will tentatively run 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with all teams having their first game within the first 2 hours of the tournament.

Starting today, Monday, March 14, 2016 to Friday, April 29, 2016, Michigan Tech Transportation Services will be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the Husky FAN (Food Access Network) on-campus food pantry.

For every food item donated, you will receive a raffle ticket to be filled out with your MI Tech User ID.  These raffle tickets will be placed into a drawing for a Free Parking Permit for the upcoming year. Faculty/Staff and Black Lot parking permits will be given away.  Receive a raffle ticket for each item you donate (Black lot raffle tickets require 2 donated food items).  The more you donate the more chances you have to WIN.

Upcoming Events at the Rozsa and McArdle Theater

The Tech Theatre Company presents “The Winter’s Tale,” in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts, Thursday- Saturday, April 7 – 9, at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, April 10, at 2:00 PM.

Published in 1623, The Winter’s Tale is one of Shakespeare’s later plays. Considered a comedy, it is also sometimes labeled one of the Bard’s late romances. Providing both intense psychological drama, and comedy, The Winter’s Tale leaves audiences with a romantic and happy ending as it follows a story of two kings, childhood friends: There are violent storms, an insistence to abandon a child, and even 16 years pass; before love reunites the characters in the end and all are redeemed.

General admission is $15, youth tickets (17 and under) are $6.

Justin Fitch Memorial Ruck

In October, Michigan Tech alumni Justin Fitch lost his battle with cancer. Fitch graduated from Tech in 2005 and was commissioned as an Army Officer via Michigan Tech’s ROTC program.

To honor his memory, the Justin Fitch Memorial Ruck will be held on Saturday, October 8. A ruck is a three, six, 12 or 22-hour march with weighted backpacks to symbolize the burdens veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other war-related illnesses carry every day.

The ninth annual Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) Outdoor Gear Auction will be held on Friday, April 15 in the MUB Ballroom. This silent auction-style event allows OAP to sell some of their gently-used gear to make room for new equipment. Students, faculty and staff can get into the act too.

Beginning Monday, April 11 we will accept items from students, faculty and staff for auction as well. We do not take any commission. What you sell your item for is the amount you will receive. Items can be dropped off from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, April 11 to Thursday, April 14 at the OAP, 207 East St. If you cannot make it during these hours, let us know and we can make plans to meet with you. Because this is done silent auction style, put the lowest price you are willing to take for your items and the bids can go up from there. The highest bid at 1 p.m. will be accepted. We can accept any outdoor silent sports items (skis, bikes, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats, backpacks, tents, outdoor clothing, etc.). We cannot accept any hunting gear (guns, bows, etc).

Items need to be picked up and paid for as soon as possible, preferably the same day as the auction. We can make arrangements for some larger items. Bring your items in early so we can help to promote what will be for sale leading up to the event.

Here’s how it works:
Students work in self-selected teams from a variety of majors and will be given a box of products from company reps to recreate or redesign these products for use in other ways. A great example of this is the Post-it note. It was invented solely by accident (read about it here). This Shark-tank style event will feature company reps who challenge students to come up with a new business idea from use of their products.
It’s a great event that will offer cash prizes (1st place teams $2,400, 2nd $1,600 and 3rd place team $800) to the winning teams

The University Innovation Fellows is a 6-week training program administered by Stanford University’s d.school (about the commitment of a 1-2 credit class at Michigan Tech). Through the fellowship, undergraduate and graduate students from across the nation are charged with cultivating a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship at their university. Fellows gain skills, tools and the networks crucial for their mission through online training and video-conferencing sessions. Fellows hone in on their leadership and communication abilities and broaden their understanding of experiential learning, design thinking, interdisciplinary education and, most importantly, student innovation and entrepreneurship.

Upon completion of training, fellows are invited to attend a 4-day retreat at Stanford University and Google. The fellowship is an opportunity to enact meaningful change while being part of a national movement. Current fellows at Michigan Tech have been working on many exciting initiatives and can’t wait to have your help in creating the future here on campus.

Annual Charity Ball Hosted by Houghton-Hancock Rotaract Club of Michigan Tech

You don’t want to miss this exciting opportunity to dress up and go to the Ball! The Houghton-Hancock Rotaract Club presents the Phantom of the Opera Charity Ball on Saturday, April 16 from 8:00 – Midnight in the Rosza Lobby. All ticket proceeds go to 31 Backpacks, a local non-profit organization that provides meals to kids from low income families. Kids are getting free breakfasts, lunches and snacks at school during the week, but what happens on the weekends? They go hungry. 31 Backpacks’ goal is to address this issue. They are sending home backpacks full of food every Friday for those students, who have been identified by administrators, as being in need. Event Details:

  • Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available
  • DJ, and Photo-booth
  • Live performances by the swing dance club and the MTU dance team!
  • Awards will be given to best-dressed theme outfits

Dance Team and Others to Perform Tomorrow

The Dance Team at Michigan Tech will have its first-ever Dance Showcase from 1 to 3 p.m. tomorrow (April 2), in the SDC Wood Gym. In addition to the Dance Team, performers include; HuskiesFit Youth Classes, the Swing Club at Michigan Tech, the Superior School of Dance (Hancock), 47 North Belly Dance Troupe and the Michigan Tech Iranian Community.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children/students and can be purchased at the door.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an international academic competition that challenges PhD students to describe their research within three minutes to a general audience using only one static PowerPoint slide. 3MT celebrates the discoveries made by research students and encourages you to communicate the importance of your research to the broader community. In addition, we will be holding a parallel competition for Masters students with similar judging criteria and prizes!

BonzAI Brawl is Tomorrow

The BonzAI Brawl is an all day artificial intelligence programming competition where teams of one to three design autonomous agents capable of overcoming challenges and out-performing their opponents.

Teams have eight hours to craft, tweek, and perfect their strategy before their AIs are entered in to the Brawl.

In the Brawl the AIs face off against one another in a tournament to determine which is the most capable.

Chemical Engineering Presents William M. Colton

The Department of Chemical Engineering presents William M Colton, vice president, corporate strategic planning, Exxon Mobil Corporation.

Colton will deliver the address, “Global Future: People, Progress, Energy and Engineering,” at 4 PM Tuesday, April 5 in Fisher 135.

By 2040, the world’s population will have reached 9 billion, and global GDP will have more than doubled. This economic progress translates into improved standards of living for billions of people.

Global energy demand is expected to grow 25 percent by 2040 and, to keep pace with demand, the world will need to pursue all economic energy sources.

Eisele to Lead Butterfly Presentation

The Portage Lake District Library will host the Keweenaw Garden Club for an evening of learning about species of butterflies that live in our area.

Tim Eisele, an assistant professor in Tech’s Department of Chemical Engineering, is also an entomology hobbyist. He will present “Keweenaw Butterflies in the Garden” at 7:00 PM Monday, April 4 at the PLDL.

Eisele will show slides and discuss which species are likely to come around in local gardens, what times of year to expect them, and what can be done to either provide food for their caterpillars, or to attract the adults. His slide show demonstrates that even though the Keweenaw does not have the diversity of butterflies that are seen further south, the area does have a nice selection of local species to enjoy. The Keweenaw Garden Club was established by and for gardening enthusiasts. They have presentations at the Portage Lake District Library on the first Monday of each month September through May. Those who are interested in learning more about the club can visit here.

Drop off your non-perishable food items Monday thru Friday from 8:00am – 5:00pm in Room 100 of the Administration Building or with Cathy Jenich, 3rd floor Lakeshore Center and collect your raffle tickets.  Winners will be notified via e-mail and announced in Tech Today.

All food collected will stay within the campus community.

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS GRADUATING IN MAY 2016

The Michigan Tech Student Foundation (MTSF) and the Student Philanthropy Council invite you to make your upcoming commencement day even more meaningful by participating in the Class Tribute Program. It’s an opportunity for you to recognize someone special to you in the printed commencement program.

Not only will tributes appear in the commencement program, but they will also be displayed on the new video scoreboard in the ice arena! It’s gonna be crazy! You have the option to upload a picture with your tribute! Maybe a special picture of you and your parents? Spouse? Best friend? Imagine that person/s sitting in the audience and seeing the photo and tribute appear on the big screen!

Rotaract_CB_2016

Annual Charity Ball Hosted by Houghton-Hancock Rotaract Club of Michigan Tech

You don’t want to miss this exciting opportunity to dress up and go to the Ball! The Houghton-Hancock Rotaract Club presents the Phantom of the Opera Charity Ball on Saturday, April 16 from 8:00 – Midnight in the Rosza Lobby.

All ticket proceeds go to 31 Backpacks, a local non-profit organization that provides meals to kids from low income families. Kids are getting free breakfasts, lunches and snacks at school during the week, but what happens on the weekends? They go hungry. 31 Backpacks’ goal is to address this issue. They are sending home backpacks full of food every Friday for those students, who have been identified by administrators, as being in need.

Event Details:

  • Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available
  • DJ, and Photo-booth
  • Live performances by the swing dance club and the MTU dance team!
  • Awards will be given to best-dressed theme outfits
  • Door Prizes

The cost is $10 for students and $15 for the community. Tickets on sale at the Rotaract desk in MUB 106 or online here (fees apply).


Keweenaw Job Fair on 4/6

Finlandia University is partnering with Michigan Works to host the 3rd Annual Keweenaw Job Fair. It will be hosted on Wednesday, April 6 from 11-2 at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock, and all Tech students and faculty are welcome! There will be about 30 companies present, so it’s great chance for students to see what opportunities are available in the local area!
