Opportunity in Washington, D.C. to contribute to a multilateral initiative to promote industrial efficiency in major economies through the Clean Energy Ministerial (www.cleanenergyministerial.org). The Fellowship position would involve frequent interactions with international counterparts and some international travel.
Prior industrial efficiency experience and demonstrated project management skills are both required. Preferred qualifications include international experience and prior work in energy and/or climate change policy. Familiarity with energy management is also desirable.
Stipends range from $50,000 to $100,000 depending on academic level, skills and experience.

Graduate student Kaitlyn Bunker (PhD student, Electrical Engineering) has been appointed collegiate director of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). She will serve on the national SWE Board of Directors this year. Alicia Walby, an undergraduate majoring in mechanical engineering, has been appointed SWE’s regional collegiate representative for this region. Regional collegiate representatives act as liaisons between the region governor, the board of directors and the students in the region.

This year, nominations are being accepted from dissertations in the fields of:
- mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering (more details)

Michigan Tech may nominate one student in each field. PhD students who have completed all of their degree requirements between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2012, are eligible.
A nomination packet must include the following required items:
- a completed nomination form.
- a 10-page abstract of the dissertation, double spaced on white letter-sized paper. (pdf preferred, number each page, and put nominee’s name on each page)
- three letters addressing the significance and quality of the PhD work
- one letter from the dissertation advisor.
- one letter from a member of the nominee’s dissertation committee.
- one letter from a person chosen by the nominee.
A nomination packet may also include the following optional items:
- abstract appendices containing non-textual material such as charts, tables or figures. (pdf preferred, number each page, and put nominee’s name on each page)
- a brief CV

A mainstay of America’s public-diplomacy efforts, the Fulbright Foreign Student Program brings citizens of other countries to the United States for Master’s degree or Ph.D. study at U.S. universities or other appropriate institutions. Many foreign Fulbright grantees are early-career professionals who will return to take leadership positions in their home countries, often working at universities or in government service.
More than 1,800 new Foreign Fulbright Fellows enter U.S. academic programs each year. Foreign students apply for Fulbright Fellowships through the Fulbright Commission/Foundation or U.S. Embassy in their home countries. The Institute of International Education (IIE) arranges academic placement for most Fulbright nominees and supervises participants during their stay in the United States.

Academic
Academic research/study grants are available in approximately 140 countries. Applicants for these grants design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. Program requirements vary by country, so the applicant’s first step is to familiarize themselves with the program summary for the host country.
Arts
Projects in the Creative and Performing Arts and Creative Writing are research/study grants where the primary purpose of the grant is to learn an art form and/or create artistic work. The Creative and Performing Arts application will require the submission of supplementary materials which are detailed in the Applicant section of the website.
English Teaching Assistantship
An English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) places a Fulbrighter in a classroom abroad to provide assistance to teachers of English to non-native English-speakers. The age and academic level of the students varies by country. ETA grants are available to almost 70 countries.
Travel Grants
Travel grants are only available to Italy, Germany, and Hungary and are designed to supplement an award from any source that does not provide for international travel. Candidates for a Travel grant must submit the official Fulbright U.S. Student online application by the deadline in October and will only be offered aTravel grant if the application is deemed qualified by the participating review committees.
Travel grants include:
- Round-trip international travel to the host country
- Limited Health Benefits
- Mid-term enrichment activities, if available in the host country
- Language or orientation programs, if available in the host country
Fulbright-mtvU Awards
Fulbright mtvU Awards are available for all countries where there is an active Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Projects should center around research on an aspect of international musical culture, and should focus on contemporary or popular music as a cultural force for expression. Preference will be given to recent graduates. In addition to the Fulbright application, an mtvU Documentation and Outreach Plan is required.
Critical Language Enhancement Award
The Critical Language Enhancement Award provides a supplement in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for grantees to receive between three and six months of intensive language study in addition to their research or study grants. This opportunity is available for select languages and in limited host countries.
Fulbright Business Grants
Australia: One Fulbright-ANU College of Business and Economics Postgraduate Scholarship for study in Business or Economics.
Mexico: Nine Binational Business Grants to enhance knowledge, expertise, and understanding of post-NAFTA Mexico are available for students interested in combining coursework in international business or law with an internship at a Mexico-based company conducting international or legal business.
Netherlands: NAF/Fulbright Duisenberg School of Finance Grants give students access to a premier private finance school located in the heart of Europe with world-class faculty and direct links to industry leaders in the world of finance. Duisenberg School of Finance offers MSc programs in Finance and Law, Asset Management, Risk Management, Corporate Finance and Banking, as well as an LLM in Finance and Law and a Ph.D. in Finance.
Spain: Fulbright/Instituto de Empresa Grants: One International MBA Grant for full-time study in a one-year international MBA program; One grant for a Master’s in International Management.
Fulbright Journalism Grants
Germany: 5 Professional Journalism Awards for beginning professional journalists or recent graduates in journalism or related fields to conduct independent research and serve as interns or guest journalists at newspapers, publishers or television and radio stations in Germany.
Spain: Fulbright/Instituto de Empresa Grants:One grant for a Master’s in Journalism.
UK: 1 Alistair Cooke Award in Journalism for a candidate to pursue the first year of a graduate-level program in Journalism in the UK. There is a possibility of an internship with the BBC for the successful candidate. The award is open to candidates at all degree levels.
Opportunities in the Sciences and Public Health
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applicants in the sciences to all eligible countries. Please note the specific grants below:
Australia: The Fulbright CSIRO Postgraduate Scholarship provides the opportunity for Fulbrighters to undertake postgraduate research with Australia’s leading and largest science research organization, CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization). Candidates currently enrolled in Ph.D. programs are eligible to apply.
Chile: The Chile Science Initiative provides three grants for Master’s level or Ph.D. students conducting study/research at specified Chilean universities. Some programs may not require a high level of Spanish proficiency since much of the work at the Institutes is conducted in English.
Indonesia: The Fulbright Indonesia Research, Science & Technology (FIRST) Awards provide scholarships for Americans to study, teach, and conduct research in priority science and technology fields.
Netherlands: The NAF/Fulbright Research Fellowships provides grants for Ph.D. level candidates in the fields of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics or Physics; NAF/Fulbright Fellowship for Childhood Cancer Research provides a grant for a post M.D. or Ph.D. in oncology.
Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health: Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships offered in partnership between the Fulbright Program and the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institute of Health have been established to promote the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource-limited settings.
