Engineering field notes, circa 1916, from the Interstate Commerce Commission Bureau of Valuation’s survey of railroad structures. Includes photocopies of building survey sheets with descriptions, photographs and floor and elevation plans of buildings owned by the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railroad, such as the depot in Calumet originally constructed by the Mineral Range Railroad.

Records, circa 1933-circa 1934, of Margaret Holley Chapman, the first woman to receive a degree from Michigan Technological University, then known as the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in Houghton, Michigan. MS-001 Quincy Mining Company Collection
Collection, 1848-1988, of the Quincy Mining Company of Hancock, Michigan. Documents the development of the company from its humble start in 1846 through the cessation of underground mining in 1931 and the sale and disbursement of its Michigan properties in the 1970s and 1980s. Includes corporate records, administrative correspondence, financial and legal documentation, employment and medical records, property and miners’ housing records, as well as operational records from the company’s underground, surface, stamp mill, reclamation, railroad, and smelting operations. Also includes records of several mining companies related to the Quincy Mining Company which operated in Houghton, Ontonagon, and Keweenaw Counties and on Isle Royale.
MS-010 Brockway Diary Collection
Diary collection, 1866-1897, of the Brockway family, including Daniel D. Brockway, his wife Lucena Brockway, J. N. Scott and his wife Mrs. J. N. Scott. It is probable that this last individual is the Brockway’s daughter, Sarah L. Scott, one of the earliest white persons to have been born in the Lake Superior region. The majority of the diaries (twenty-seven of the thirty-two items) are by Lucena Brockway.

MS-016 Daniel Brockway Family Collection
Collection, 1852-1924, of the Daniel Brockway family, an early merchant and community building family in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. Contains correspondence, financial records and legal records of Daniel Brockway’s many land and business ventures throughout the Great Lakes region, particularly the activity of several stores Brockway operated with his son, Albert A. Brockway, under the partnership D.D. Brockway & Son. The collection also includes records of several mining enterprises with which Brockway was involved, as well as personal records of several other members of Brockway’s extended family.

Collection, contains printed listings, microfilm and other information about cemeteries in Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon and Baraga counties as well as microfilm of records from the Forest Hill cemetery in the city of Houghton.
MS-034 Peter Crebassa Collection
Collection, 1831-1891, of Peter Crebassa, a fur trader and agent for the American Fur Company at Mackinac, Michigan. Includes personal and business correspondence to and from Peter Crebassa, as well as on his behalf. Also includes statements of accounts, contracts, court cases and photographs of Crebassa and his family. These records relate to Crebassa’s involvement with the fur companies, the Chippewa Indians, the Catholic Missions and the federal government and offers a unique view of the relationships between these institutions as well as demonstrating the significance of the fur trade to the early settlement of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Great Lakes Region.

Most buildings are in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, especially Houghton and Ontonagon counties.

Collection, 1893-1918, of the Portage Entry Quarries Company of Jacobsville, Michigan. Includes business correspondence, ledger books, maps and photographs. The bulk of this collection relates to James W. Wyckoff’s tenure as superintendent of the Portage Entry Quarries Co.

Includes programs from annual meetings as well as presentation abstracts. Also includes geological field trip guide books from the various annual meeting locations. Periodic additions to this collection will occur.

Correspondence, 1859-1910, received and sent by Richard M. Hoar, a prominent early citizen of Houghton, Michigan. Includes correspondence pertaining to his business with his brother, J. Hoar & Brother, a general merchandise business, as well as other business related correspondence, bills and receipts. Also includes correspondence from his capacity as a member of the Michigan state legislature and Houghton town official.

Collection, before 1959, of photographs, postcards and stationary compiled by Carlos Wenberg, a former mayor of Houghton, Michigan. Includes photographs of the proposed Portage Lake Lift Bridge as well as other civic activities. Also includes several examples of city stationary, one version of which is on copper sheets.

The Copper Crown Lodge (Logen Koppar Kronan) records include a minute book and an account book. While the account book appears to have some lists of members, both books are in Swedish.

Collection, 1890-1996, compiled by Reverend Herman Page on the history of Michigan’s Copper Country with a particular focus on Copper Country railroads. This collection covers most of the railroads of the Copper Country including the Duluth, South Shore, and Atlantic Railway, the Mineral Range Railroad, and the Hancock and Calumet Railroad as well as information on various mining companies and locations in the Copper Country. Includes glass plate negatives, photographs, clippings, correspondence, maps, diagrams, postcards and memorabilia.

Also includes snapshots from various vacations. One page also includes wedding and birth announcements from friends.

Autobiography, circa 1984, of Marie McCurdy, a native of Ripley, Michigan. Includes description of her early life in Ripley and Hancock, her stay in the sanatorium with tuberculosis, as well as her time in Canada where her husband was a gold miner near Ontario. Also includes anecdotes upon returning to Michigan with accounts of her husband’s illness from silicosis and her subsequent activities after his death.

MS-306 Lydia Smith Douglass Diary
Diary, 1848, of Lydia Reed Smith Douglass. Photocopies of original and typed transcript of the diary describe her first year of marriage to Columbus C. Douglass, including trips to Illinois and Wisconsin to meet her in-laws and her trip to and subsequent life on Isle Royale, Michigan where her husband, then an employee of the Ohio and Isle Royale Mining Company, had moved to open and manage a mine and smelting operation.

MTU-055 National Youth Administration Correspondence
Correspondence, 1941-1942, received and sent by Julius T. Nachazel, supervisor of the National Youth Administration’s local vocational education program and a professor at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan. As the supervisor of the War Training program held at the college under the auspices of the National Youth Administration, Nachazel’s correspondence includes letters to and from the War Department, the State Board of Control for Vocational Education and the Federal Security Agency’s National Youth Administration for Michigan as well as various companies trying to find supplies, recruit students and place graduates in jobs. Also includes correspondence from companies regarding unpaid invoices.

Minutes, 1949-1954, of the Administrative Council of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan. The council was a committee of the Board of Control and met regularly to discuss issues related to the college. Its membership was comprised of both members of the administration and faculty.

MTU-064 Michigan Tech Canadian Foundation Records
Records, 1959-1961, of the Michigan Tech Canadian Foundation, a scholarship foundation started with a bequest from John Edgar McAllister. McAllister was a graduate of the Michigan Mining School (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan and established the scholarship to support Canadian students attending either the University of Toronto or Michigan Technological University. Includes copies of McAllister’s will as well as the incorporation papers and by-laws for the Michigan Tech Canadian Foundation.
MTU-066 Smith-Schnelle Case Commentary
Commentary, 1969, by Dr. Milton O. Peach, a professor of engineering mechanics at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. A dispute arose between President Ray Smith and Dr. Kenneth Schnelle as to Dr. Schnelle’s fitness to teach. Includes commentary and inter-office memorandums written by Dr. Milton O. Peach, a supporter of Dr. Schnelle, agitating against the secrecy of the proceedings, structures of universities, faculty work load, compensation policy and tenure policy. Also includes a request for observers and a list of proposed witnesses for the hearing before the Committee on Academic Tenure from the university’s lawyers.
