Includes theater programs, advertisements, business stationary, brochures and signs as well as cards, invitations and programs for various local clubs and organizations. Also includes political signs, union meeting notices and strike ballots.

03-187D Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railroad Buildings Engineering Field Notes

Engineering field notes, circa 1916, from the Interstate Commerce Commission Bureau of Valuation’s survey of railroad structures. Includes photocopies of building survey sheets with descriptions, photographs and floor and elevation plans of buildings owned by the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railroad, such as the depot in Calumet originally constructed by the Mineral Range Railroad.

05-041D Margaret Holley Chapman Records

Records, circa 1933-circa 1934, of Margaret Holley Chapman, the first woman to receive a degree from Michigan Technological University, then known as the Michigan College of Mining and Technology in Houghton, Michigan. She received her B.S. in General Science in 1933 and a B.S. in Chemistry the following year, also completing some graduate work.

Research collection, material collected by Stanley J. Dyl while earning his Master of Science degree in Geology at Michigan Technological University. Material includes field notes, photographs and slides.

06-018A Ron Helman Collection on Michigan Tech Fund

Collection, circa 1976-circa 1996, accumulated by Ron Helman during his tenure as Vice President of the Michigan Tech Fund at Michigan Technological University. Includes campus publications, typed manuscripts, photographs and negatives.

06-043A Bill Stewart Papers

Papers, 1906-2002, collected by Bill Stewart relating to the “Keweenaw Venture” joint operation between Homestake Copper Company and International Nickel Company. Also includes documentation from Stewart Holdings, Peninsula Copper Industries, Great Lakes Minerals, and several other mining initiatives.

MS-001 Quincy Mining Company Collection

Collection, 1848-1988, of the Quincy Mining Company of Hancock, Michigan. Documents the development of the company from its humble start in 1846 through the cessation of underground mining in 1931 and the sale and disbursement of its Michigan properties in the 1970s and 1980s. Includes corporate records, administrative correspondence, financial and legal documentation, employment and medical records, property and miners’ housing records, as well as operational records from the company’s underground, surface, stamp mill, reclamation, railroad, and smelting operations. Also includes records of several mining companies related to the Quincy Mining Company which operated in Houghton, Ontonagon, and Keweenaw Counties and on Isle Royale.

MS-010 Brockway Diary Collection

Diary collection, 1866-1897, of the Brockway family, including Daniel D. Brockway, his wife Lucena Brockway, J. N. Scott and his wife Mrs. J. N. Scott. It is probable that this last individual is the Brockway’s daughter, Sarah L. Scott, one of the earliest white persons to have been born in the Lake Superior region. The majority of the diaries (twenty-seven of the thirty-two items) are by Lucena Brockway.

Records, 1837-1885, of christenings in Cornwall, England. Compiled by June and Richard Ross of Redlands, California, the unindexed records are organized alphabetically by parish and then by surname.

MS-016 Daniel Brockway Family Collection

Collection, 1852-1924, of the Daniel Brockway family, an early merchant and community building family in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. Contains correspondence, financial records and legal records of Daniel Brockway’s many land and business ventures throughout the Great Lakes region, particularly the activity of several stores Brockway operated with his son, Albert A. Brockway, under the partnership D.D. Brockway & Son. The collection also includes records of several mining enterprises with which Brockway was involved, as well as personal records of several other members of Brockway’s extended family.

MS-027 Copper Country Cemetery Collection

Collection, contains printed listings, microfilm and other information about cemeteries in Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon and Baraga counties as well as microfilm of records from the Forest Hill cemetery in the city of Houghton.

MS-034 Peter Crebassa Collection

Collection, 1831-1891, of Peter Crebassa, a fur trader and agent for the American Fur Company at Mackinac, Michigan. Includes personal and business correspondence to and from Peter Crebassa, as well as on his behalf. Also includes statements of accounts, contracts, court cases and photographs of Crebassa and his family. These records relate to Crebassa’s involvement with the fur companies, the Chippewa Indians, the Catholic Missions and the federal government and offers a unique view of the relationships between these institutions as well as demonstrating the significance of the fur trade to the early settlement of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Great Lakes Region.

Photograph collection, 1913-2005, of Herman Gundlach, Jr., president of Herman Gundlach, Inc., a construction company based in Houghton, Michgan. Includes photographs from 84 photo albums showing buildings constructed by Herman Gundlach and successive construction firms. Most buildings are in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, especially Houghton and Ontonagon counties.

Photograph collection, 1952-1979, of the Daily Mining Gazette, a newspaper published daily in Houghton, Michigan. Includes images taken by the newspaper’s photographers for publication. Covers local and regional subjects and events.

MS-053 Portage Entry Quarries Company Collection

Collection, 1893-1918, of the Portage Entry Quarries Company of Jacobsville, Michigan. Includes business correspondence, ledger books, maps and photographs. The bulk of this collection relates to James W. Wyckoff’s tenure as superintendent of the Portage Entry Quarries Co.

Collection, undated, contains research materials, articles, photographs, historical documents and objects relating to the publications of Michigan’s Copper Country historian and author Clarence Monette.

MS-059 Institute on Lake Superior Geology Collection

Collection, 1955-, of the Institute on Lake Superior Geology, a non-profit professional society dedicated to the exchange of geological ideas and scientific data and promoting better understanding of the geology of the Lake Superior region. Includes programs from annual meetings as well as presentation abstracts. Also includes geological field trip guide books from the various annual meeting locations. Periodic additions to this collection will occur.

MS-065 Richard M. Hoar Correspondence

Correspondence, 1859-1910, received and sent by Richard M. Hoar, a prominent early citizen of Houghton, Michigan. Includes correspondence pertaining to his business with his brother, J. Hoar & Brother, a general merchandise business, as well as other business related correspondence, bills and receipts. Also includes correspondence from his capacity as a member of the Michigan state legislature and Houghton town official.

MS-067 Carlos Wenberg Collection

Collection, before 1959, of photographs, postcards and stationary compiled by Carlos Wenberg, a former mayor of Houghton, Michigan. Includes photographs of the proposed Portage Lake Lift Bridge as well as other civic activities. Also includes several examples of city stationary, one version of which is on copper sheets.

MS-069 Collection on the Osceola Mine Dewatering Project

Collection, 1954-After 1982, of manuscripts based on civilian diver Carl Peterson’s account of his participation in the Osceola Mine Dewatering Project. Also included are copies of photographs of the project and an article “Unwatering the Osceola Lode” (Kramer, A.S. et al. Reprinted from Mining Engineering, April 1956).

Indexes, 1940-1973, for subjects in the Daily Mining Gazette, a newspaper published in Houghton, Michigan. Indexes include articles about Michigan Technological University from 1946 to 1967 and the Copper Country from 1940 to 1958 as well as Green Sheet articles, a local history series published weekly from 1952-1973.

MS-080 Copper Range Company Collection

Collection, 1851-1983, of the Copper Range Company of Painesdale, Michigan as well as its subsidiary companies: Atlantic Mining Company, Baltic Mining Company, Champion Mining Company, Copper District Power Company, Copper Range Motor Bus Company, Copper Range Railroad, C. G. Hussey & Co., Michigan Smelting Company, Trimountain Mining Company and White Pine Mining Company. Includes correspondence, corporate reports, business records, financial records and land deeds as well as company housing records, rental agreements, employee aid fund records, employment records and printed ephemera.

MS-081 Swedish United Sons of America Records

Records, 1901-1939, of the Swedish United Sons of America, also known as the Sveriges Förenade Söner of Amerika, located in Laurium, Michigan. The Copper Crown Lodge (Logen Koppar Kronan) records include a minute book and an account book. While the account book appears to have some lists of members, both books are in Swedish.

MS-082 Reverend Herman Page Collection

Collection, 1890-1996, compiled by Reverend Herman Page on the history of Michigan’s Copper Country with a particular focus on Copper Country railroads. This collection covers most of the railroads of the Copper Country including the Duluth, South Shore, and Atlantic Railway, the Mineral Range Railroad, and the Hancock and Calumet Railroad as well as information on various mining companies and locations in the Copper Country. Includes glass plate negatives, photographs, clippings, correspondence, maps, diagrams, postcards and memorabilia.

MS-086 Myrtle Exley Photograph Albums

Photograph albums, 1911-1924, of Myrtle Exley, a native of Hancock, Michigan and 1916 graduate of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Contains photographs of Hancock and the Michigan College of Mines in Houghton, Michigan as well as scenes from her enrollment at the University of Michigan and subsequent teaching posts. Also includes snapshots from various vacations. One page also includes wedding and birth announcements from friends.

MS-089 Helen Frenette Photograph Collection

Photograph collection, circa 1900-circa 1920, of photographs by Upper Peninsula photographers. Includes mainly portraits of unidentified people, arranged by photographer, type and description. Includes several tintypes as well as a group portrait of the 1911-1912 I.E. Swift Company sponsored hockey team.

Includes organizational meeting minutes for the Board of Supervisors, minutes for the Houghton County Parks and Recreation Commission, minutes of the Houghton County Overall Economic Development Planning Committee and minutes of the Houghton County Planning Committee as well as financial records, annual reports, correspondence, publications, magazines and newspaper clippings.

Collection, 1872-2001, compiled by Harold H. Heikkinen consists of photographs of the Atlantic Mine (Mich.) area companies, churches, schools and recreation. Most photographs are fully identified with individual names, locations and dates. Also included are maps and newspaper clippings that further help identify the photographs.

MS-221 Marie McCurdy Autobiography

Autobiography, circa 1984, of Marie McCurdy, a native of Ripley, Michigan. Includes description of her early life in Ripley and Hancock, her stay in the sanatorium with tuberculosis, as well as her time in Canada where her husband was a gold miner near Ontario. Also includes anecdotes upon returning to Michigan with accounts of her husband’s illness from silicosis and her subsequent activities after his death.

Ledger, 1906-1910, of the Lake Copper Company, a company operating in Ontonagon County, Michigan. Includes invoices pasted into a ledger, documenting the company’s operating expenses.

Papers, circa 1908-circa 1941, of Mary Bracco Manger of Calumet, Michigan. Includes personal correspondence, photographs and other printed ephemera as well as two notary public certificates for Emil H. Manger and portraits of Mary Bracco Manger and Emil H. Manger.

Flight publications, 1943-1960, compiled by Eleanor E. Beaudry, a local resident of Houghton, Michigan and licensed pilot. Includes instruction texts and workbooks as well as Civil Air Patrol and U. S. Air Force manuals.

MS-292 Eagle Harbor School District Records

Records, 1853-1917, of the Eagle Harbor School District No. 1 in Eagle Harbor, Michigan. One volume contains minutes from 1853-1895, including minutes from the meeting establishing the school district. Also included in the volume are expense records from 1871-1917 for the school district.

MS-306 Lydia Smith Douglass Diary

Diary, 1848, of Lydia Reed Smith Douglass. Photocopies of original and typed transcript of the diary describe her first year of marriage to Columbus C. Douglass, including trips to Illinois and Wisconsin to meet her in-laws and her trip to and subsequent life on Isle Royale, Michigan where her husband, then an employee of the Ohio and Isle Royale Mining Company, had moved to open and manage a mine and smelting operation.

Records, circa 1850-circa 1900, pertaining to Copper Harbor Light Station in Copper Harbor, Michigan. Includes letters and appointments of lighthouse keepers and lighthouse inspectors for the 11th district which includes Copper Harbor.

Records, 1948-1985, of the Calumet Ingot Club, also known as the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Calumet-Laurium, Michigan. Includes minutes, history and charter of the organization and correspondence files.

MS-315 Arnold Mining Company Records

Records, 1898-1907, of the Arnold Mining Company of Copper Falls, Michigan. Includes computations and tables of latitude and departures for number 1 and number 2 shafts.

MS-318 Copper Country Council of Service Agencies Records

Records, 1976-1997, of the Copper Country Council of Service Agencies. Includes minutes, correspondence, workshop letters and membership lists.

MS-321 Percy Ross Videotape Collection

Collection, 1977-1985, of Percy Ross, a native of Laurium, Michigan and syndicated newspaper columnist and philanthropist renowned for his goal of giving away his entire fortune. Includes videotapes with interviews by various news organizations, profiles of Percy Ross and coverage of some of his gifts and offers.

MS-326 Painesdale Oral History Project

Oral history project, 1984-1987, conducted by Lillian Tretin as part of her dissertation through the University of Michigan, “Traprock workers: the culture of work and risk at an underground copper mine, 1900-1945.” Includes cassettes as well as transcriptions of the interviews of local residents of Painesdale, Michigan, a company town for the Champion Mining Company, a subsidiary of the Copper Range Company.

MS-332 Bosch Brewing Company Radio Commercials

Commercials, 1959-1964, for the Bosch Brewing Company, a brewery in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Produced by Clinton E. Frank, Inc., includes 33-1/3 rpm recording disks, possibly master copies, of Bosch Brewing Company’s radio advertising campaigns.

MS-334 Allouez Mining Company Payroll Records

Payroll records, 1891-1905, of the Allouez Mining Company. Bound volume lists employees alphabetically and tallies earnings as well as deductions for rent, fuel, supplies, doctors, club fees, mine store and mine meat store purchases.

MS-335 “A School in the Woods” Manuscript

Manuscript, circa 1987, of “A School in the Woods” by Charles Symon about Thomas Bright Wyman’s forestry school, the School of the Woods once located in Munising, Michigan. Includes a manuscript copy of an article that appeared in Michigan History magazine (Jan/Feb 1987) with a few variations.

Records, 1895-1941, of the Atlantic Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlantic Mine, Michigan. Includes records of pastors, official members, classes, members in full connection, probationers, marriages, and baptisms.

MS-345 Calumet Brewing Company Records

Records, 1903-1930, of the Calumet Brewing Company. Includes correspondence, bills and receipts. Although the company was dissolved in 1923, there is paperwork and correspondence with lawyers and insurance companies attempting to collect debts owed to the Calumet Brewing Co.

Collection, circa 1979-circa 2000, of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan Writers’ Association. Includes publications primarily by members T. Kilgore Splake, Ruth B. MacFarlane and Moira Davison Reynolds as well as minutes, newsletters, correspondence and annual conference material.

Ledger, 1892-1897, from Vertin’s Department Store in Calumet, Michigan. Bound volume includes individual charge accounts that indicate the good purchased, prices and dates accounts are paid.

MS-370 Jay A. Hubbell Scrapbooks

Scrapbooks, 1872-1884, documenting the early political career of Jay Abel Hubbell, a native of Avon, Michigan and Houghton’s first U.S. Representative in Congress. Includes newspaper clippings from numerous papers as well as other publications.

MS-385 Franklin Pardee Collection

Collection, 1962-1970, compiled by Franklin Pardee documenting the beginnings of the Quincy Mine Hoist Association, Inc. Includes board meeting minutes, correspondence, studies and maps concerned with the feasibility of transforming the Quincy Mining Company site into a tourist site.

Photograph collection, 1913-1914, assembled by Louis G. Koepel, long-time employee of the Quincy Mining Company in Hancock, Michigan. Includes photographs of the 1913-1914 Michigan Copper Miners’ Strike as well as Quincy Mining Company.

Collection, 1980-1984, of WomenSphere, a program of events at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. Includes correspondence, minutes, files, programs and clippings as well as audiovisual recordings of several events.

MTU-049 Svitlana Winnikow Ephemera

Ephemera, after 1960, of Dr. Svitlana Winnikow. Includes her degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois as well as a report of her grades and a certificate of membership for the University of Illinois, Urban Chapter of the Society of the Sigma Xi. Additionally contains photographs of Svitlana Winnikow and one of presumably her husband, Mistislaw Winnikow. Mistislaw Winnikow’s passport is also included.

Papers, 1942-1968, of Gilbert W. Boyd, a professor in the Metallurgical Engineering department of Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan. Includes correspondence, research files, class lectures, outlines, quizzes and exams.

MTU-054 Michigan Tech Fund Collection

Collection, 1941-2000, of the Michigan Tech Fund, the official fund management agency of Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. Includes correspondence, minutes, financial records, photographs of university events, audiovisual material and records on various projects including the Memorial Union Building, Mont Ripley Ski Hill, and Portage Lake Golf Course. Also includes minutes, correspondence, reports and financial records of the Michigan College of Mining & Technology (now Michigan Technological University) Alumni Foundation.

MTU-055 National Youth Administration Correspondence

Correspondence, 1941-1942, received and sent by Julius T. Nachazel, supervisor of the National Youth Administration’s local vocational education program and a professor at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan. As the supervisor of the War Training program held at the college under the auspices of the National Youth Administration, Nachazel’s correspondence includes letters to and from the War Department, the State Board of Control for Vocational Education and the Federal Security Agency’s National Youth Administration for Michigan as well as various companies trying to find supplies, recruit students and place graduates in jobs. Also includes correspondence from companies regarding unpaid invoices.

MTU-057 Michigan College of Mining and Technology Administrative Council Minutes

Minutes, 1949-1954, of the Administrative Council of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan. The council was a committee of the Board of Control and met regularly to discuss issues related to the college. Its membership was comprised of both members of the administration and faculty.

MTU-058 Gordon Hellman Oral History Interview

Oral history interview, 1988, interview with Gordon Hellman, retired Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, as well as having been the first Physical Plant Director for the university and Assistant to Vice President for Operations & Finance.

Collection, 1930-1983, of the Physical Plant Department at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. Includes photograph albums that document building projects, correspondence, memorandums, and blueprints.

MTU-060 Bart Park Correspondence

Correspondence, 1926, of Bart Park, an assistant professor of chemistry at the Michigan College of Mines in Houghton, Michigan. Includes a series of letters from various companies and government agencies in response to Park’s request for information on either the use of or recommendation of a spectrograph for the quantitative and qualitative determination of impurities in copper and iron.

Records, 1930-1988, of the office of Academic Affairs (now the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs) at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. Includes budgets and other financial documents as well as correspondence for the Faculty Development committee, the Campus Enrichment committee, the Academic Council, the Academic Officers and Academic Affairs.

MTU-062 The Alumni Association of the Michigan College of Mines Collection

Collection, 1911-1961, of the Alumni Association of the Michigan College of Mines and the subsequent Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Tech Alumni Association) in Houghton, Michigan. Includes correspondence, minutes, programs, clippings and photographs for the planning and celebration of various reunions.

MTU-064 Michigan Tech Canadian Foundation Records

Records, 1959-1961, of the Michigan Tech Canadian Foundation, a scholarship foundation started with a bequest from John Edgar McAllister. McAllister was a graduate of the Michigan Mining School (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan and established the scholarship to support Canadian students attending either the University of Toronto or Michigan Technological University. Includes copies of McAllister’s will as well as the incorporation papers and by-laws for the Michigan Tech Canadian Foundation.

MTU-066 Smith-Schnelle Case Commentary

Commentary, 1969, by Dr. Milton O. Peach, a professor of engineering mechanics at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. A dispute arose between President Ray Smith and Dr. Kenneth Schnelle as to Dr. Schnelle’s fitness to teach. Includes commentary and inter-office memorandums written by Dr. Milton O. Peach, a supporter of Dr. Schnelle, agitating against the secrecy of the proceedings, structures of universities, faculty work load, compensation policy and tenure policy. Also includes a request for observers and a list of proposed witnesses for the hearing before the Committee on Academic Tenure from the university’s lawyers.

MTU-067 Michigan Technological University Coed Hall Memorandums

Memorandums, 1963-1970, from advisors of Coed Hall, a coeducational dormitory and food service complex at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. Includes memos on key privileges, security, telephones, women student and annual reports. Also includes a paper on the non-participants in the Optional Hour Program and a letter to the Dean of Women at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute inquiring about campus life for women.

MTU-068 J. Robert Van Pelt Papers

Papers, circa 1922-circa 1984, of Dr. J. Robert Van Pelt, president from 1956-1964 of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan. Includes office files and reports, correspondence, copies of speeches, letters of congratulations on his appointment as president and newspaper clippings as well as the “Report of the Secretary’s Survey Committee on the Geological Survey,” a committee for the Department of the Interior in 1954, chaired by Dr. Van Pelt.

MTU-069 Michigan Technological University School of Business and Engineering Administration Records

Records, circa 1977-circa 1980, of the School of Business and Engineering Administration at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. The majority of the files pertain to a cooperative education program provided by the school, including available jobs, interview forms, questionnaires and correspondence. Also includes departmental files, correspondence and committee reports.

MTU-070 James D. Spain Papers

Papers, circa 1955-circa 1973, of James D. Spain, a biochemistry professor at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. The faculty papers include research and proposals on the production of tumors in rats, mathematical modeling of biological processes, water research in Portage Lake, Lake Superior and Torch Lake, grant proposals, correspondence, and copies of Spain’s master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation as well as various files and reports.
