Co-Op Employment Opportunity with the Village of Howard, WI

The Village of Howard is interviewing for Summer 2022 Internships, and for Summer/Fall 2022 Co-Ops which are seasonal positions. Interviews in the Green Bay area or via virtual meeting are currently available.

Requirements include:
• Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Tech, Civil/Survey Major, or other related field of study.
• 2.5 GPA or above
• Student Visa, Permanent Visa, or U.S. Citizen,
• Freshman Class Level or higher, and/or Graduate Engineer.

The Village of Howard, approximate population of approximately 20,000, located in the Green Bay, Wisconsin area, is seeking hard working students looking to further their engineering experiences and knowledge through firsthand experience. Construction inspection provides a basic background for civil engineering courses and valuable job experience. Students will obtain valuable construction inspection experience that
can be added to resumes and is highly regarded by prospective future full-time employers. The Village of Howard’s Engineering Department provides construction inspection and administration services for municipal roadway and utility construction projects, typically totaling from 5 to 10 million dollars annually.

Student employees can expect to enjoy a professional, relaxed, atmosphere. While working for the Village you can expect to perform a wide variety of tasks that will give you a more complete understanding of the construction process and a background for your future career.

Generalized Responsibilities Include:

  1. Represent the Village of Howard on the construction site when the Contractor is working usually in excess of an 8 hour day. Work includes effective interaction and communication with surveyors, soil testers, engineers, and construction personnel.
  2. Use and learn about contract specifications and plan-reading skills along with basic land surveying skills to ensure that construction complies with project plans and specifications.
  3. Perform inspection for utility and roadway construction projects.
  4. Verify/record constructed locations of installed utilities.
  5. Maintain a daily log of all construction activities and pertinent conversations or instructions discussed with the contractor(s).
  6. Keep track of construction pay item quantities on a daily basis.
  7. Communicate/report to the Staff or Village Engineer on project progress.
  8. For Co-Op students there will also be the opportunity to assist in record drawing development, preliminary project designs, estimating, and planning.

AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Excel, construction inspection and surveying skills are highly desirable but not required. Having your own vehicle for transportation and a valid driver’s license is required. Wages and mileage
reimbursement are competitive.

Seeking Drawdown Scholars for summer 2022!

The Penn State College of Engineering is seeking talented applicants for its Drawdown Scholars program taking place this summer from June 1 – Aug. 4, 2022 on the Penn State University Park campus.*

Commonly seen as the most comprehensive plan ever proposed to reverse global warming, the Drawdown mission seeks to pursue a practical, solutions-oriented path ahead for action on climate change. The Penn State Drawdown Scholars program supports that mission by training students in:

  • Technical, ecological, and social solutions for climate mitigation
  • Climate communication
  • Environmental law and policy
  • Leadership and professional development
  • Team-based project development
  • Global engagement

Drawdown Scholars will be paired with Penn State faculty mentors according to their mutual interests to conduct laboratory, field, and/or modeling research to advance Drawdown strategies for reversing global warming in several topics, including:

  • Electricity
  • Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
  • Industry
  • Transportation
  • Buildings
  • Land Sinks
  • Coastal and Ocean Sinks
  • Engineered Sinks
  • Health and Education
  • Water-Energy-Food Nexus

Program Details

  • Student stipend: $600/week
  • On-campus housing provided*

Husky Innovate Talk with Dr. Colin Brooks: Developing the Cross-I System for Inspecting Railgrade Crossings1/26/22, 12:00- 1:00 pm, Zoom

Senior Research Scientist with Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI), Colin will discuss an innovative I system for inspecting rail-grade crossings that he and his team are developing and the steps they are taking to make it available nationwide on a commercial basis. MTRI Inc. facilitates the commercialization of intellectual property of Michigan Tech and the Michigan Tech Research Institute. Brooks has developed Crossing-i, an automated, drone-enabled grade crossing inspection system. The Crossing-i system can determine whether vertical approach grades create a risk for vehicles to get stuck on tracks, assess the adequacy of visual sightlines at the crossing, and locate relevant assets such as gates, lights, signage, etc. It uses high-resolution images collected via drone / uncrewed aerial system (UAS) that are then processed into 3D data for analysis. This event is a tribute to the late Bob Mark, Professor of Practice within the College of Business. Mark started the Elevator Pitch Competition at Michigan Tech. The Bob Mark Pitch Business Model Competition recognizes his entrepreneurial spirit and its continuation at Michigan Tech. The 2022 Bob Mark Business Model Competition is hosted by Husky Innovate, PHC, and the College of Business. Husky Innovate is Michigan Tech’s resource hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. UG student worker needed – NASA project

Interested in working on a project for NASA? Have you taken CEE 3810? Interested in contributing to journal and conference papers about the research? If so, Dr. Paul van Susante is looking to hire on an hourly basis (10 hr/week at $15/hr) an undergraduate student (US Person or Citizen) with geotechnical knowledge for immediate start in January to help with his NASA cone penetrometer project. They need to perform a great many 1m deep cone penetrometer tests under controlled conditions (inside the freezer container) where we have to reset the testbed with lunar simulant, compact to the desired relative density and create icy layers with specified wt% ice (particles or cemented). The lunar simulant then needs to be emptied from the testbed and put in the drying container to dry out before the next test. The tests themselves include a regular ASTM DCP, a modified instrumented ASTM DCP, a handheld electronic cone penetrometer, a percussive cone penetrometer with 5 different cone geometries. The work is on campus in the Benedict Lab. Safety training and respirator training will be required. SURF Applications Due Feb. 11

Applications for 2022 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURFs) are due by 5 p.m. on Feb. 11. Fellowship recipients will spend the summer on an individual research project under the guidance of a Michigan Tech faculty mentor.

SURFs are open to all Tech undergraduates who have at least one semester remaining after the summer term. Awards are up to $4,000.
