As an Environmental Staff Professional, you will support environmental investigation, compliance, remediation, brownfield redevelopment, and commercial property due diligence projects through Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs). You’ll apply environmental regulations and industry best practices to evaluate site conditions, collect and interpret environmental data, and develop clear, defensible deliverables that meet client and regulatory requirements. This role offers a unique blend of fieldwork, technical analysis, project support, and professional growth opportunities, with hands-on experience across a wide variety of environmental projects.

  • Environmental Field Investigations: Support Phase I and II ESAs, environmental investigations, remediation projects, and brownfield redevelopment efforts through site visits, environmental observations, and field documentation.
  • Sampling & Data Collection: Collect soil, groundwater, soil gas, and other environmental media samples; perform field screening activities; and maintain accurate records, including field logs and chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Field Coordination & Site Support: Assist with the coordination of field activities, including working alongside drilling crews, utility subcontractors, and project teams to support site characterization and remediation efforts.
  • Environmental Data Analysis: Review, organize, and interpret field and laboratory data, compare findings to applicable federal and state regulatory standards, and support data management and graphical presentations.
  • Technical Reporting & Project Support: Prepare clear, accurate technical reports and project documentation that communicate findings, support regulatory compliance, and help clients make informed environmental decisions.
  • You have a Bachelor’s degree in Geology or a related field
  • You have 0-5 years of relevant geo-environmental experience, including consulting, regulatory, or industry roles
    • Experience with federal and/or state environmental regulations, a plus
  • Tennessee Professional Registration (e.g., Professional Geologist) or the intent to obtain, a plus
  • You are proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and familiar with ArcGIS and/or AutoCAD, a plus
  • You have strong attention to detail, creative, and critical thinking
  • You have OSHA HAZWOPER 40 Hour Certification, a plus
  • Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites

As an Associate Geophysicist, you will primarily execute near-surface geophysical surveys and perform site observations, while also providing support for geophysical data processing as well as geotechnical and environmental exploration, allowing our team to deliver accurate subsurface insights for engineering and environmental projects. Approximately 75% of your time will be spent in the field, ensuring the integrity and reliability of geophysical data that supports safe infrastructure development and sustainable solutions. This role provides exposure to a wide range of geophysical techniques and offers opportunities to contribute to innovative projects that shape the future of the industry.

  • Coordinate and Execute Field Surveys: Plan, organize, and perform near-surface geophysical surveys using a variety of advanced methodologies under minimal supervision.
  • Assist with Data Processing: Support basic geophysical data processing and interpretation tasks, ensuring accuracy and consistency in deliverables.
  • Ensure Data Quality and Compliance: Conduct QA/QC on field data, verify adherence to project goals, and identify limitations or anomalies in real time.

S&ME is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic entry-level Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Cincinnati, Ohio.

As an Entry-Level Geotechnical Engineer, you will support a wide range of civil, geotechnical, and environmental projects, learning from licensed Engineers and/or Geologists. You will gain real-world experience through a strong mix of fieldwork and office-based analysis, not being stuck behind a desk all day. As well as subsurface exploration, environmental investigations, construction support, and technical reporting.

  • Field Investigations & Exploration: Conduct fieldwork including soil borings, drilling oversight, monitoring well installation, soil and rock classification, in-situ testing, and collection of soil, groundwater, and gas samples at project sites.
  • Data Analysis & Technical Support: Analyze subsurface conditions, support laboratory testing programs, interpret geological and geotechnical data, and assist with engineering and environmental evaluations.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Prepare data tables, figures, and graphical presentations; compare results to state and federal regulatory standards; and assist in writing clear, well-organized technical reports.
  • Construction & Environmental Inspections: Perform construction and environmental inspections, document site conditions, and ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Coordinate with drilling contractors, laboratories, vendors, and project team members while communicating effectively with internal staff and external clients.
  • You have a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Mining, or a related field
  • You have an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification with the desire to pursue PE licensure in the future
  • You have a passion for Geotechnical solutions with a strong interest in field and analytical work
  • You have basic technical writing skills at the college level
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
