Overview

The successful candidate will be a member of TRC’s expanding Infrastructure Geotechnical Engineering Group, currently having team members in Mount Laurel, NJ, Cleveland, OH, Columbus, OH, Scott Depot, WV, and Manassas, VA offices.  In addition to the geotechnical engineering team, TRC also has a full-service drilling division, an ASTM/AASHTO accredited soil mechanics and rock testing laboratory, a PDA testing and vibration monitoring component, and a commercial construction inspection division, all of whom work together to provide high-quality and cost-effective geotechnical design solutions for a wide range of project applications. 

Typical projects include highways, bridges, industrial processing facilities, municipal capital improvements, dams and levees, power generation and transmission projects, low to high-rise residential developments and office complexes, multi-story parking facilities, solar and wind renewable energy.  Currently, our geotechnical service area is primarily located within northeastern, southeast, and lower midwestern states, with rapidly growing needs for support in other regions of the US. 
Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities will include preparing geotechnical calculations, reports or sections of reports, and supporting documentation under the supervision of senior technical staff, inspection and logging of site exploration activities, and visual classification of soil and rock. Additional responsibilities might also include assisting with laboratory testing of soil and rock, pile dynamic analysis (PDA), construction vibration monitoring, quality control testing of earthwork and foundation construction, and site assessments and reporting associated with geohazard and/or dam safety analyses.  Training will be provided for all aspects of the job responsibilities. 
Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology required. MSCE in Geotechnical Engineering a plus.
  • Zero (0) to three (3) years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel and to perform field assignments.
  • The ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • AutoCad or MicroStation experience is helpful but not required.

Are you our next Geotechnical Engineer?

The Engineer I/II/III is responsible for providing civil/geotechnical support to Operations and Environmental Departments on all aspects of gypsum disposal operations, dike construction and maintenance, inspections, and process pond water management. Responsible for the direct management of gypsum stack construction and closure engineering activities. 

What you’ll do:

  • Provide technical support for day-to-day activities and on all aspects of the gypsum stack system including disposal activities and pond water management.
  • Review and provide technical consultations to Operations on dike construction and overall gypsum stack management.  Foresee and anticipate issues in a timely manner and make recommendations.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining short-term and long-term gypsum disposal plans in support of operational decisions and capital planning.   
  • Coordinate periodic surveying and testing programs to track progress and measure gypsum and water inventories.  Report issues and recommendations to upper management and ensure solutions are implemented in a timely manner
  • Participate in the front end design of gypsum stack expansion and closure projects.  With closure projects could also be responsible for the project management including construction and project controls.
  • Ensure compliance with Florida Gypsum Management Rules 62-672 & 62-673, applicable Federal Rules and Consent Decree requirements on all aspects of gypsum stack operations
  • Work closely with staff from Operations and Environmental Department to ensure permit requirements, ground water monitoring plans, and any gypsum stack system related permitting processes are in compliance
  • Work closely with Water Balance Engineer on water balance projections, gypsum stack growth model, and calibrations
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties and/or civil related projects as assigned and/or schedule allows

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with a major in Civil, Environmental, Mining or related engineering discipline required
  • Surface mining or heavy construction experience with exposure to environmental and safety compliance and stormwater management elements. Demonstrated engineering and design experience.

We approach problems with creativity and innovation.  Our Albany-area office of Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Staff Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing practice.  We are looking for a motivated candidate with an interest in developing both field and analytical skills, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of a strong team.

Job Responsibilities:

Perform the following geotechnical and dams engineering tasks:

  • Perform engineering activities throughout all phases of a project lifecycle, including field inspections, subsurface explorations, evaluation, geotechnical analysis, geotechnical and dam design, and engineering services during construction. 
  • Prepare and review geotechnical design calculations, engineering reports, construction drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Work as a team member within the Albany, NY office and across other Schnabel offices to effectively balance workload among available resources.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel, including assignments that may last several weeks or months away from the office. Field work might include:
  • Collection of data and measurements.
  • Observation and logging of geotechnical test borings.
  • Observation of construction activities, and testing materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, masonry and reinforcing steel.
  • Communication with contractors, engineers, and project managers.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • 0-3 years of professional experience.
  • A strong work ethic and the desire to perform professionally at a high level.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and the ability to begin and progress designs.
  • A commitment to being an active contributor to our office culture.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and flexible to changes in work assignments as changes occur in project needs.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Relevant work experience/background in geotechnical and/or dam safety engineering.
  • A Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, and future ability to become a Licensed Professional Engineer.
