Boren Fellowships

Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.  For a complete list of countries, click here.

Boren Fellows represent a variety of academic and professional disciplines, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Swahili. For a complete list of languages, click here.

Boren Fellowships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their projects, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined.  NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.

DHS Education Programs _ STEM Summer Internship Program

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. This program is open to undergraduate students in a broad spectrum of DHS mission-relevant research areas and graduate students interested in the specific field of Nuclear and Radiological Threat Detection.

The DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to conduct research at federal research facilities located across the country. The goal of this program is to engage a diverse, educated, and skilled pool of scientists and engineers in HS-STEM issues and to promote long-term relationships between student researchers, DHS, and federal research facilities to enhance the HS-STEM workforce.

DHS has partnered with the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) to manage the application and review process, notification, and implementation of the program.

DHS reserves the right to make no awards or to cancel this program. DHS assumes no liability for canceling the HS-STEM Summer Internship Program or for anyones failure to receive actual notification of cancellation.

Michigan Sea Grant

Michigan Sea Grant is recruiting applicants for three fellowship programs. The fellowships offer terrific career-building and networking opportunities, real-world training, a salary and benefits, and a chance to explore careers that combine science and policy. Graduate students with a wide range of backgrounds (i.e., natural or physical sciences, policy, law) and a strong interest in Great Lakes, coastal, aquatic or marine issues are encouraged to apply. Programs require a fill-time commitment, and typically fellows graduate from their degree program before embarking on the fellowship.

The California Science and Technology Policy Fellowship

Offered by the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST), the California Science and Technology Policy Fellowships place professional scientists and engineers in the California State Legislature for one-year appointments. The fellowships are ideal for qualified applicants who are interested in improving the interface between science and legislative decision-making and who want to learn the public policy decision-making process.

NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program

Recipients of the graduate scholarship will be awarded up to two years with a third year option based on academic standing and programmatic requirements.

Five graduate scholarships will be awarded annually.

Students awarded scholarships will be provided the opportunity for two 10 week internships performing aeronautical research at a NASA center during the first two years they are enrolled in the program.  List of Supported Fields

The scholarship award includes:

  • $35,000 annual stipend
  • Up to $11,000 awarded for each school year, to be used for tuition and other education related expenses
  • Two (2) $10,000 Summer internship at a NASA Research Center

Eligibility:

  • Graduate Students must have received or be on track to receive their bachelor’s degrees by Fall 2013, or they may be currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program but will not receive their degree until Spring 2015 or after.
  • All applicants must have at least two (2) years of full time study left to be eligible for the Program

Department of Energy Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship

he Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy, is a 10-week summer internship program that provides opportunities to minority and female students who are pursuing degrees in science, technology (IT), engineering, or mathematics (STEM majors). Candidates who are selected will have the opportunity to work on focused research projects consistent with the mission of the Office of Fossil Energy.

During the 10 weeks, students will work at one of several locations. At the conclusion of the internship, students will attend a “Technical Forum” where they will present their research project and tour several technical sites located nearby (the location of the technical forum changes every year).

Candidates will receive a paid stipend during the program, in addition to approved transportation expenses to and from the internship site and technical forum location. The MLEF program allows students to gain valuable experience in DOE/FE mission-related research programs, and offers an “inside view” of federal employment which encourages students to consider future opportunities within the Department of Energy.

Simons Award for Graduate Students in Theoretical Computer Science

The Simons Foundation Division for Mathematics and the Physical Sciences invites applications for the Simons Award for Graduate Students in Theoretical Computer Science program. These awards will be made to graduate students with an outstanding track record of research accomplishments.

To be eligible the applicant must be a graduate student who has completed two, three or four years at a U.S. or Canadian institution of higher education. A track record of outstanding results in theoretical computer science is the key criterion.

There is a limit of two applications per university. Please coordinate with the department chair. There are no citizenship requirements.

A Simons Award for Graduate Students is awarded for a period of two years for up to $24,000 per year. An awardee must be a graduate student for the duration of the award. Each award will provide support for the following:

  • Student Discretionary Funds: up to $8,500 per year for the awardee to use at his/her discretion (e.g., travel to summer research locations or to conferences, equipment, books, personal computer).
  • Summer Support: up to $9,000 per year for up to three months of summer salary support for awardee.
  • Department Funds: $2,500 per year to the awardee’s department to enhance the research atmosphere of the department; these funds should be expended at the discretion of the student’s advisor.
  • Overhead: $4,000 to the institution for administrative expenses.

To qualify for the program, students must:

  • Be 18 years of age;
  • Be a citizen of the United States;
  • Be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university (sophomore year or higher); and
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Students will be paid:

  • A weekly stipend of $750 for Master’s students;
  • A weekly stipend of $850 for Doctoral and Post-Doctoral students;
  • Approved travel costs to and from the host site; and
  • Approved travel costs to the Technical Forum for presentations and awards.
