The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. The 2016 O.H. Ammann Fellowship application is now available. Each year SEI awards multiple Ammann Fellowships to graduate students who are creating new knowledge in structural engineering.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicant must be a member of the Society (membership applications may be submitted with scholarship application), in any grade, and must be in good standing at the time of award;
- During the tenure of this fellowship, the recipient may not work on research projects other than that for which this fellowship has been granted; but recipients may accept other awards if the conditions of such awards are the same as those for this fellowship;
- Evidence must be shown throughout the application that the recipient has the ability to conceive and explore original ideas in the field of structural engineering.
Established in 1938 in honor of famed pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, the Amelia Earhart Fellowship is awarded annually to women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering. The Fellowship of US$10,000, awarded to 35 Fellows around the globe each year, may be used at any university or college offering accredited post-graduate courses and degrees in these fields.

The Research Triangle Park facility is looking for Data Modelling and Web Applications Support for the National Center for Computational Toxicology. Positions are geared towards master’s and bachelor’s graduates (respectively) in engineering, computer science, or related fields. Primary tasks include providing biological, chemical, and toxicology database and web application support.
The facility in Cincinnati is looking for a Water Supply and Resource Communications Assistant. This position is geared towards bachelor’s graduates in communications, environmental science, and engineering. Primary job tasks for the successful applicant will include a wide variety of communications support activities, with an emphasis on preparing accomplishment reports, developing presentation materials, and project summary sheets that describe research activities of the Water Supply/Water Resources Division.

The Executive Committee of the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) is soliciting nominations for the 2016 MAGS Distinguished Master’s Thesis Awards to recognize and reward distinguished scholarship and research at the master’s level. Michigan Tech may nominate one candidate in each disciplinary category.
Eligible students
- will have earned a master of science degree between July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2015 in the field of Biological/Life Sciences or the Humanities
- Michigan Tech may nominate one thesis in each category
- The 2017 competition will seek nominees in the fields of Social Sciences and Physical Science/Engineering
- will have completed an original thesis that makes an unusually significant contribution to the discipline
- will not have earned a PhD (or comparable research degree) in any discipline prior to the writing of the master’s thesis

Join Harriet King (gscap@mtu.edu), coordinator of the Graduate School Communications Assistance Program for group work hours. These workshops are provided at no charge to students working on a dissertation, thesis, or report. Harriet is skilled with MS Office, Open Office, and Adobe Acrobat Pro. These rooms are equipped with PCs with University software, or you may bring your own laptop. If you need additional help or prefer one-on-one assistance, please contact Harriet to arrange for times and inquire about the services available.

For example, “Your vacation begins after you defend your thesis,” and “Your adviser wants you to become famous, so that he/she can finally become famous.” remind me that it is hard work to complete a thesis, and that your advisor really does want you to succeed – even if it might be for selfish reasons!
