December 9: Seminar on upcoming thesis and dissertation changes

Students who are scheduling a defense of a thesis or dissertation on or after January 10, 2011 will need to format and submit their document according to the new procedures.

The new procedures do not apply to students submitting a report, or to students who defend before January 10, 2011.

The Graduate School will give a presentation outlining the major changes in formatting and submission procedures on December 9th beginning at 4:05pm.  This seminar at least once more in January, based on demand.

Please register online so we can plan for your attendance.  After registration, you will receive e-mail reminders closer to the date, and the location of the seminar.

Seminar: Submitting your Thesis or Dissertation to the Graduate School

Students planning on finishing a thesis or dissertation spring or summer 2013 are invited a seminar designed to help students understand the submission process and answer questions about it.

Once you register, you will receive a confirmation with the location and a reminder of the date and time.

If you are unable to join us, this seminar will be taped and available online.

Significant changes were introduced in the fall based on revisions approved by the University Senate.  Join us to learn about the changes and have your questions answered.

Submission 101 and Formatting 101-103 for Summer 2020

Students who are completing a dissertation, thesis, or report are invited to join the Graduate School to learn about the resources available to them to assist in scheduling their defense, formatting their documents, and submitting their documents.  In one afternoon, you can learn everything you need to be successful and complete your degree in a timely fashion! Faculty and staff who assist students with submissions are also welcome to attend. Attend the entire event, or stop in for the seminar that interests you.

  • When: Wednesday, May 20, 2020, 2 – 4pm (see detailed schedule below)
  • Who: Students completing a dissertation, thesis or report; faculty and staff who assist students with submission
  • Where: Attend online; please register to receive reminders and the Zoom URL. The seminar will be available online as well as on campus.

If you are unable to join us, the event will be taped and available online after the event. The previous semester’s seminars are always available online.

Detailed schedule

  • 2 – 3pm – Submission 101
    Learn what is required to submit your document to the Graduate School and the deadlines for the upcoming semester.  Best for students who are completing their degree this semester or next semester.
  • 3 – 4pm – Formatting 101-103
    Learn about templates, checking your document with Adobe Acrobat, and how to use copyrighted materials. You’ll also learn where resources are on the web page so you can learn more about the topics that interest you.


Argonne National Laboratory Thesis-Parts Appointments

Argonne National Laboratory, one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s major research centers, offers opportunities for qualified graduate students to carry on their master’s or doctoral thesis research at the laboratory. Thesis Parts Appointments are for students who wish to perform only a portion of their dissertation research or to satisfy practicum requirements at Argonne. The work a student proposes must be related to work in progress at the laboratory and must require resources not available on campus.

Three Minute Thesis

GSG is pleased to announce that registration for this years Three Minute Thesis competition is currently open. This year’s competition is on Wednesday, November 6th. This competition offers a great opportunity for graduate students across the university to present their research to a general audience. This contest is open to all grad students – PhD/MS (thesis, report, or coursework.)

Registration closes October 23rd, at 11:59 PM.

Preliminary rounds: MUB Ballroom, 12-4 PM

Final round: Continental Fire Co, 6-8 PM.

Are you working on formatting corrections for your dissertation, thesis, or report? Do you need help? Are you unsure where to submit your dissertation, thesis, or report?

Join the Graduate School (gradschool@mtu.edu) for group work hours. These workshops are provided at no charge to students working on a dissertation, thesis, or report. Staff will able to help with the changes required by the Graduate School for these documents in MS Office. Assistance will also be available for converting documents to PDF from Word and how to make simple corrections and check your document in Adobe Acrobat. The workshops will be in rooms with PCs with University software, or you may bring your own laptop. Distance students may contact gradschool@mtu.edu about remote assistance during these times via web conferencing.  If you need additional help outside of these times, please contact the Graduate School.  On a limited basis, one-on-one assistance may be available.

Last day to submit a post-defense document to successfully complete your degree in fall is April 22, 2019 by 4pm EST!
