Library Matters: Archives Premiers New Exhibit About 1913 Strike

Although the Michigan Tech Archives remains closed for research, “Tumult and Tragedy: Michigan’s 1913-14 Copper Strike,” a traveling exhibit created by the Archives, will premier at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, on the first floor of the J. R. Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library. Members of the exhibit project team will discuss the research and design process for the exhibit. The event is free, open to the public and refreshments will be served.

FVPL Annual Meeting features talk by Mary Durfee

The annual meeting of the Friends of the Van Pelt Library will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, in the East Reading Room of the J. R. Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library. Everyone is welcome to attend. This year’s meeting features a talk, “Malta: The Surprising Little Country that Can,” by Associate Professor Mary Durfee (SS). Durfee taught at the University of Malta as a Fulbright Scholar in 2007-08, and since then she has been a visiting professor at least once a year. In spring 2012, she co-led a study tour of the country for the Society for Industrial Archeology.

Improvements are coming to Italian Hall Site

Student archeologists from Michigan Tech are surveying the Italian Hall Site. They’re looking for any type of archeological remains underground before improvements can be made to the site. “We’re using remote sensing and a little bit of slightly intrusive testing as a way of helping them plan for taking care of this site to make sure nothing gets damaged in building a new memorial,” said Tim Scarlett, Associate Professor of archeology and anthropology at Michigan Tech. Read MoreWatch the Video
