Khana Khazana Serving Hawaiian Cuisine

Khana Khazana returns for the Spring Semester Friday with delicacies from our 50th State. Hawaiian cuisine will be served at the MUB food court from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. The menu features, Huli Huli Chicken. A popular dish of grilled chicken with a sweet teriyaki style barbecue sauce; Fresh Tomato Salad with tropical herbs and Creamy Potato Salad, soft potato with Hawaiian dressing.

Cost is $7.25 for the full meal which includes a fountain drink.

Outdoor Adventure Program Closed on Saturday, January 16

The OAP will be closed on Saturday January 16, 2016 for staff training and development.  We will re-open on Sunday January 17 at 6:00PM.

OAP Offering Snowshoe Rental Deal

For the month of January 2016 the Outdoor Adventure Program (Located at 207 East Street) is running a deal for snowshoe rentals, Rent 1 get 1/2 off second pair. The rental center is open Monday – Saturday noon -5:00PM and 6PM-8PM on Sundays. Call 906-487-2290 for more information.

Intermittent nighttime closures of Portage Lake Lift Bridge set for week of January 25

Intermittent nighttime closures of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge have been scheduled for January 25-29 as part of ongoing maintenance work. The closures will likely result in delays for motorists. The contractor for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be testing new bridge components. These tests require a series of lifts of the bridge span and a full closure of the bridge to traffic. Motorists should expect delays of up to 15 minutes between 7 and 11 p.m.and delays of up to 30 minutes between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. during the testing period. The lower bridge deck will be closed to snowmobile traffic during these tests. The $8.4 million project involves upgrades and preventive maintenance on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock. The project started in mid-December 2014 and is scheduled to be completed in mid-April 2016.

Salvation Army Showing Inside Out

This Saturday, the Salvation Army is having our first movie night and we are showing “Inside Out”. Students from Michigan Tech are welcome to come and enjoy the movie. The movie starts around 6:00PM and it will be at their main building in Hancock. They are aslo looking for any college students to donate their time in tutoring children who needs help in school. The after school program will begin on March 1st. If you are interested in participating in this opportunity, please contact Chris at chris_nicolai@usc.salvationarmy.org or call 906-370-1131. The volunteers are required to go through a background check and a safe from harm training that will be held on February 27. If you already took a similar class that has the same concept, you will have to get a record of the class and send it to our headquarters.

ADVENTURE SPRING BREAK 2016 with the Outdoor Adventure Program

The OAP student staff plan a number of Spring break adventures for students. The OAP prides itself on offering a quality experience in the outdoors, planned and led by student trip leaders. Our student trip leaders have extensive training, including Wilderness First Responder Certification and previous trip leader experience. Our trip leaders spend a great deal of time researching and planning these trips to ensure a safe, fun, and sometimes educational experience for their peers.

Yosemite Valley Experience! Live in Yosemite Valley, California for the week! Activities could include hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, climbing, and soaking in the Yosemite Valley culture. Price: $300 (+ airfare to San Francisco Airport)

Annual Event, Colorful Taste of Thailand

Colorful Taste of Thailand hosted by the Thai Student Association will be on Saturday, January 16 at the MUB Ballroom. It offers full-meal courses which you can enjoy the many colors of fine Thai cuisine. The courses will include appetizers, main courses, desserts, and drinks.

Free for Michigan Tech students with a $10 deposit that will be refunded at the event. There are only 112 tickets, which will be available from January 11-15th, 11:00AM to 1:00PM in the MUB commons.

Pete Seeger: The Storm King at the Rozsa

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts presents the grammy nominated “Pete Seeger: The Storm King.” It’s an evening of live music, poetry and video with a look back at the great hero of 60’s music, peace and the counterculture movement.

This beautiful collection of recorded stories, narratives, and poems spoken by the late Pete Seeger and longtime protege, producer and drummer Jeff Haynes, is set to live, multi-genre music that enhances Seeger’s marvelous reminiscences.

“Pete Seeger: The Storm King,” comes to the Rozsa at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22.

See Jeff Haynes with Richie Stearns, Sara Milonovich, Sean Harkness and Timothy Hill, in a multi-media presentation interwoven with recordings and video of the great Pete Seeger. HuskyLEAD Leadership Series for Spring 2016

Student Activities is pleased to announce the Spring 2016 HuskyLEAD sessions. HuskyLEAD is a series of workshops designed to develop the leadership skills of students. The sessions are held on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 PM and last only one hour. All sessions are held in the MUB Alumni Lounge with the exception of the January 26 workshop, which will be held in Fisher 135.

Tech’s Sunday Hockey Game to be Streamed Live

Michigan Tech’s game at the Desert Hockey Classic this Sunday will be available live via Pac-12.com. Fans can watch the game free-of-charge by clicking HERE.

The Huskies will play at either 2 p.m. or 5 p.m. ET on Sunday depending on the result of Friday’s showdown with UCONN. Arizona State, who is hosting the event, will play the late game Sunday regardless of its result in the semifinals vs. Yale.

There is no live broadcast or stream of Tech’s game today. Those not making the trip to Arizona to watch the Huskies take on Connecticut can listen to the contest live on Mix 93 and Pasty.net or follow along on Twitter (@mtuhky) for live in-game updates.

Volunteers Needed for 2016 U.S. Skiing Championships

Volunteers are still needed for the 2016 U.S. Skiing Championships hosted by Michigan Tech at its on-campus Nordic Training Center Jan. 3-9. The event will consist of four race days: classic distance races on Jan. 3, freestyle sprint races on Jan. 4, freestyle distance races on Jan. 7 and classic sprints on Jan. 9. The website, NordicChampionship.org, has full race details and volunteer registration. Volunteers are needed for race registration and check-in, at the start and finish areas, on the course to help with crowd crossing and before and after the events to set up and tear down. With the help of a supportive community and network of volunteers, Michigan Tech has successfully hosted the U.S. Skiing Championships three times previously: 2007, 2008 and 2015. Dog Therapy Tuesday

The next Dog Therapy opportunity is coming up Tuesday, Decemebr 15. Dog Therapy is held twice a month at O’Connor House and coordinated by Wellness.

From 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, bulldogs LuLu and Gordie will be available to hold, pet and lay on some loving. There’s no better way to beat the stress of Finals Week then with Dog Therapy. For more information contact Health and Wellness Coordinator Whitney Boroski.

Asian Combo at Khana Khazana

This week’s Khana Khazana is the Annual Asian Combo. Serving will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in the MUB Food Court. Four Asian specialties are on the menu: Kung Pao Chicken (China), Schezwan Fried Rice (Indo-Chinese), Luang Prabang Salad (Laos) and Sweet Corn Vegetable Soup (Indo-Chinese). Book Drive to Support Community Center in Ghana, Africa

Pavlis Institute for Global Technological Leadership this past summer  had the incredible opportunity to travel to Ghana, Africa to carry out numerous projects.  Part of the experience led to a community center in a small town called Abesim.  The Pavlis program has worked with this community center in the past, but the team felt that they should bring attention back to this incredible resource for students.  One of the most unfortunate things about this community center is that it is etremely lacking in educational material for students achieving higher education.  Therefore, as part of a Senior Capston Experience, Courtney De Cramer is working with the Ghana team that will be traveling to the country in the summer of 2016 to donate college-level textbooks to this community center.  Therefore, they are running a book drive from December 7-December 19 to collect any college level materials for the team to bring on their journey.  They will accept any and all donations.  To donate or for questions please contact Pete Seim (pjhokeme@mtu.edu) or Courtney De Cramer (ckdecram@mtu.edu).

Pavlis Honors College Angel Tree

This holiday season, the Pavlis Honors College is sponsoring a Salvation Army Angel Tree. If you are able to purchase a gift for a child in need, stop by room 722 of the M&M building to choose an angel tag off our tree. The tags contain the name of a child, their age and their interests. After purchasing a gift, attach the tag to it and return it under the tree. The Salvation Army asks that the gifts remain unwrapped. The last day to drop off a gift will be Dec. 11.   For many children in the Keweenaw, your gift may be the only one they open this holiday season. We are sponsoring 50 children this year and with the help of Michigan Tech faculty, staff and students, hope to provide all of them with gifts. Thank you for your generosity.

Heritage Day of Muslim Countries

Khana Khazana Serving Moroccan Food

Maghrebi mint tea is a green tea prepared with spearmint leaves and sugar, traditional to the Greater Maghreb region most closely associated with Morocco.
The serving of the tea can take a ceremonial form, especially when prepared for a guest. The tea is traditionally made by the head male in the family, and offered to guests as a sign of hospitality. Typically, at least three glasses of tea are served, and it is considered impolite to refuse it.

A tagine is a sweet and warmly spiced Moroccan stew in which meat and/or vegetables and pulses are slowly simmered. This is a traditional Moroccan lamb tagine simmered in numerous spices. Lamb and apricots is a lovely combination for that.

HuskyLEAD – Planning an Organization Event

The next HuskyLEAD session will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 in the Memorial Union Building Alumni Lounge at 6PM and will last for one hour only. The subject will be “Planning an Organization Event from Start to Finish” and the presenter will be Maryann Wilcox, Student Activities.

Tuesday’s workshop will help you to turn your event idea into a reality – everything including hiring speakers and professionals, budgets, funding sources, space reservations, publicity, and use of campus and community resources will be discussed. HuskyLEAD is a series of workshops designed to develop the personal, academic, professional and organizational leadership skills of students. All students are welcomed and you need not be a member of an organization to attend this session. Documerica features video projections that parallel the music, based on the 1971 Environmental Protection Agency’s Project Documerica photographs, which capture America’s sometimes fabled, sometimes fraught relationship to its land. The imagery of Project Documerica is the inspiration for ETHEL’s Documerica, which taps the archive’s rich evocation of time and place and brings its visual and emotional impact into dialogue with the 21st century. With Documerica, ETHEL invites audiences to contemplate individual and collective connections, action, and responsiveness to environmental and social challenges revealed through the repurposing of this distinctly American archive through the unifying language of art. The Nutcracker at the Rozsa

Rehearsals are underway for The Nutcracker! Aspiring dancers from many area schools: Houghton, Hancock, Baraga, Lake Linden Hubbell, CLK, Michigan Tech, Gogebic and others; have been training and rehearsing for their upcoming performances of “The Nutcracker.”  Young dancers will take the stage to create this magical Christmas fairytale with the Minnesota Ballet and Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra on Dec. 4 -5, 2015 at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. 

Tickets are on sale now, $25 for adults, $10 for youth. Special for the Nutcracker performances only, a $55 “family package” includes two adults and two youth tickets, and additional youth tickets can be added on for $6 each. The next HuskyLEAD will be held on Tuesday, November 10 at 6PM in the Memorial Union Building Alumni Lounge. The topic will be “Marketing & Social Media – Tips & Tricks.” Learn to better market yourself, your organization, and your events. We will cover ways to utilize social media to your advantage while attracting followers and engaging audiences. The presenter will be Jessie Stapleton, Student Activities.

HuskyLEAD is a series of hour-long workshops designed to develop the personal, academic, professional and organizational leadership skills of Michigan Tech students. Film Board Features Two Movies

Film Board presents Mr. Holmes. A story of an elderly Sherlock, as he tries to remember his final case with the help of his housekeeper’s son. The showings will be 5:30, 8:30 and 11:30 p.m. Friday, 2:30, 5:30, 8:30 and 11:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Sunday in Fisher 135.

Also this weekend, Film Board presents Hocus Pocus, a special Halloween event at noon Saturday in Fisher 135. Tickets are $3, Concessions are $1 each for pop, candy, and popcorn.
