Khana Khazana Serving Moroccan Food

Dining Services has teamed up with international students from across campus to bring you Khana Khazana (food treasure).  International students make authentic ethnic foods from their homes and share them with you every Friday during the academic year at the Food Court in the Memorial Union from 11:00 am until 1:30 pm.

Maghrebi mint tea is a green tea prepared with spearmint leaves and sugar, traditional to the Greater Maghreb region most closely associated with Morocco.
The serving of the tea can take a ceremonial form, especially when prepared for a guest. The tea is traditionally made by the head male in the family, and offered to guests as a sign of hospitality. Typically, at least three glasses of tea are served, and it is considered impolite to refuse it.
……………………………………….
Moroccan lamb tagine
A tagine is a sweet and warmly spiced Moroccan stew in which meat and/or vegetables and pulses are slowly simmered. This is a traditional Moroccan lamb tagine simmered in numerous spices. Lamb and apricots is a lovely combination for that.
………………………………………………
Moroccan-Style Vegetable Couscous
Make this sweet & spicy Moroccan-Style Vegetable Couscous as a festive vegan entree. Zucchini, sweet potatoes, chickpeas, dried fruit. The spice adds a wonderful depth to this sweet and savory dish; super healthy and so satisfying!

November 13: Moroccan Cuisine

See New York’s “Reigning String Quartet” ETHEL at the Rozsa Center

What’s the music like? Expect post-modern classical, with a bit of twangy-folk-fiddle sound thrown in. Should be a great concert, beautiful music with very cool videography based on the 1970’s “Project Documerica.” Experience the electrifying concert ETHEL: Documerica at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts tomorrow, Friday, November 6, 2015 at 7:30 PM.

Acclaimed as “unfailingly vital” (The New York Times), “brilliant,” “downtown’s reigning string quartet” (The New Yorker), and “one of the most exciting quartets around” (Strad Magazine), ETHEL invigorates the contemporary music scene with exuberance, intensity, imaginative programming, and exceptional artistry. Documerica features video projections that parallel the music, based on the 1971 Environmental Protection Agency’s Project Documerica photographs, which capture America’s sometimes fabled, sometimes fraught relationship to its land. The imagery of Project Documerica is the inspiration for ETHEL’s Documerica, which taps the archive’s rich evocation of time and place and brings its visual and emotional impact into dialogue with the 21st century. With Documerica, ETHEL invites audiences to contemplate individual and collective connections, action, and responsiveness to environmental and social challenges revealed through the repurposing of this distinctly American archive through the unifying language of art. Tickets for ETHEL: Documerica are on sale now, $19 for adults, $10 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Advance reserved seating is now available, please order tickets early! Tickets are available by phone at (906) 487-2073, online at Rozsa.mtu.edu, in person at the Central Ticketing Office in the Student Development Complex, or at the Rozsa Box Office the evening of the performance.

Tickets are on sale now, $25 for adults, $10 for youth. Special for the Nutcracker performances only, a $55 “family package” includes two adults and two youth tickets, and additional youth tickets can be added on for $6 each. Aquila Theatre Presents a Minimal, Starkly Beautiful Romeo and Juliet

The story is so well known, star-crossed lovers who are doomed from the start, so why is this production special? This minimal adaptation is a joy of the senses: Simple, pared-down and shadowy, Aquila Theatre’s Romeo and Juliet, directed and adapted by Desiree Sanchez, is a completely new way to experience one of Shakespeare’s most iconic plays. Shakespeare’s eight plus actors are cut down to five, the original seventeen roles reduced to eight. The story is condensed, focused, and chiseled away at until it stands out in uncluttered relief.

According to a recent review by Sam Hall, of DC Metro Theater Arts, “This is a very real and very serious production, full of shadows and chiaroscuro light….We have here a remarkable fusion of design, text, and performance, of consciousness, scenery, sound, light, space, meaning, and movement. This is Romeo and Juliet as high tragedy, a balletic dream …. a grandeur of poetry and high art. It is beautiful and disturbing. Deeply moving, without a trace of sentimentality. ”

Experience the beauty of Aquila Theatre’s new production of Romeo and Juliet, playing at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts next Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 8:00 PM. There will be a pre-performance discussion with Aquila Theatre tour members at 7:00 pm in the Rozsa lobby. Tickets for Romeo and Juliet are on sale now, $24 for adults, $10 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Advance reserved seating is now available, please order tickets early!

For more details please see the attached press release. A photo is also attached, please credit Richard Termine.

hawaii

Khana Khazana Serving Hawaiian Cuisine

Khana Khazana, a weekly international lunch will feature Hawaiian cuisine this Friday, October 16.
The side dish is Creamy Potato Salad.  Cookbooks document the popularity of potato salad recipes across mainland America in the early 20th century, and some observers have noted that mainland chefs were being recruited to run Hawaii’s top hotels and restaurants during the same period, bringing their European-influenced culinary backgrounds—including creamy potato salad—with them. It’s a casual dish that easily adapts to any type of food or occasion—it is, in other words, quintessentially local.
The main dish is Huli Huli Chicken a grilled chicken dish in Hawaiian cuisine. Preparation involves basting the chicken constantly with a Huli-huli sauce. Huli Huli Chicken’ (turn, turn) was invented by Ernest Morgado when he cooked teriyaki chicken for a group of farmers in 1955. This has been a Hawaiian staple with sticky rice ever since.
Also serving, fresh Corn Tomato Salad, a favorite summer salad using fresh corn, tomatoes, basil and onions. This tomato salad recipe is a wonderful way to avoid turning on the stove! Works especially well with grilled vegetables.
Serving is from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the MUB Food Court. The whole meal is $7 and includes a fountain soda or $3 for each item.

  • October 23- Middle Eastern (Felafel, Shwarma, Warbat)

The 41 North Film Festival returns to Michigan Tech with special guests Jimmy Chin and

Nick Berardini

The 41 North Film Festival returns to Michigan Tech’s Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Oct.2325, bringing criticallyacclaimed independent films that are currently in festivals or theaters around the country and the world, along with guest filmmakers. All events are free and open to the public.

This year, the festival will feature filmmaker/photographer/climber/athlete Jimmy Chin, whose new documentary Meru tells a compelling story about risk, determination and friendship as it follows the efforts of three internationally famous climbers (Chin among them) to reach the Shark’s Fin summit of Mount Meru in the Himalayas.

The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23. Chin will speak after the film and participate in a Q&A. He is an awardwinning photographer whose work has been featured regularly in National Geographic. The film Meru won the 2015 Sundance Audience Award.

At 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24, director and journalist Nick Berardini present his new documentary about the Taser Corporation, Killing Them Safely. It is a timely story about the ethics of engineering and marketing, as well as the relationship of the police to the public as mediated through these weapons.

Among the many other films screening during the weekend are Drone, The Wanted 18, King Georges, Mavis!, Here Come the Videofreex, and Victoria.

The festival will also feature an exhibition of documentary storytelling that employs Oculus Rift VR technology. Projects featured include Ferguson Firsthand, which uses a virtual reality environment to invite the audience into the scene, where they can encounter people and objects that tell the story, and Herders, which provides an immersive cinematic look into the lives of Mongolian yak herders.

By bringing compelling stories about the world and today’s important issues to campus—along with filmmakers whose research and artistry tell those stories—the 41 North Film Festival offers the community an opportunity to consider and discuss complex questions around science, engineering, industry, politics, history and the human condition.

Festival sponsors include the Michigan Tech Departments of Humanities and Visual and Performing Arts, and the Van Evera Distinguished Lecture Series at the Rozsa Center. For the full schedule and program, visit: http://41northfilmfest.org and on Facebook. For more information about the festival and its events, please contact Erin Smith at ersmith@mtu.edu.
