Five incredible Michigan Tech alumni, under the age of 35, who are following their dreams will visit campus to inspire and energize the student body. We invite deans, chairs, faculty, students and the community to join us at the Rozsa Center at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 14 for a facilitated panel discussion.
Below are brief bios about our outstanding alumni speakers:
Amy Storer (’10 Social Science) is an Intelligence Analyst for Homeland Security Investigations in Savannah, Georgia and is a professor of American Government at Savannah State University and the College of Coastal Georgia. She earned two master’s degrees from Harvard University (’17) and Johns Hopkins (’12).
Ben Almquist (’04 Materials Science & Engineering) is an assistant professor in Bioengineering at Imperial College London. Ben leads a research group that straddles the interface between nanotechnology and biology. His research has led to recognition as a 2017 Emerging Investigator by the journal Biomaterials Science, along with invited talks around the world at conferences such as the World Economic Forum.
Kevin Moran (‘10 Mechanical Engineering) manages manufacturing operations and is the lead mechanical designer at H3D gamma, a new company working to revolutionize the way we identify and localize gamma-ray sources. Prior to his current position, he worked for Manoj Bhargava, the founder of 5 hour energy, and scaled Mt. Denali during its worst summit in 30 years.
Sarah Carlson (‘03 Chemistry) is an assistant professor of surgery at Boston University and a vascular surgeon at the Boston VA Medical Center. She has a passion for complex aortic aneurysm repair and mentoring young surgeons in training.
David Vennie (‘05 Electrical Engineering) is a partner in Worldwide Power Products (WPP) in Houston, Texas, a top provider of power-generation solutions to clients around the world. He has worked at WPP for eight years and is the Vice President of Sales and Engineering.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer, located in Crystal Falls, Michigan.
As the recognized resource, position functions as multi-disciplinary for the utilities and permit coordination for the geographical area covered by the Crystal Falls TSC. Responsibilities including providing technical advice and consultation to utilities, the TSC’s permit agent, contractors, and other customers for timely completion of permit work and utility relocation activities in the area. This position acts as a liaison between MDOT and utility companies/agencies during the design and construction phases, and is responsible for recommending final sign-off on plans for approval and utility clearance. This position maintains project records, communications and other relevant project information regarding utility and permit operations. This position will also assist with the development and construction of MDOT road projects, and provide technical support to the TMC 12.
Possession of a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering or in civil and environmental engineering OR Will be obtained by December 31, 2018 is required.

A degree in engineering management from Michigan Tech positions students for management careers in the engineering field. By blending engineering know-how with a foundation in business, graduates help meet industry demand for this sought after major (offered by only two schools in the state). As a dual degree, engineering management enhances other disciplines by providing a solid backing of management, and STEM skills and hands-on experience.
Huskies of all majors are invited to network with engineering management students and faculty from 4 to 5 p.m. October 10 in Academic Office Building (AOB) 101. You’ll learn about internship experiences, student organizations and courses and career options.

Carl Blair (SS), Dana Van Kooy (HU) and Libby Meyer (VPA) will host an information session for Cumbria 2019, a faculty-led study abroad program in northern England and southern Scotland: summer, Track B. The session will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 10) in Fisher 130.
We welcome students from across campus. This program offers students an opportunity for foreign travel and for fulfilling HASS (humanities, arts and social sciences) and other General Education requirements in the fields of history, literature, music and archaeology. This session will provide students with information about course offerings, field trips, the application process, costs and scholarships.
