This new website is intended to showcase undergraduate students’ options for coursework, international experiences, employment and professional development through Michigan Tech during summer semester and assist students in making informed decisions when developing summer plans. Much of the content is and will continue to be links to existing pages.
The CEE Student Success Center (SSC) will be opening tonight for business. It is located in 102 Dillman Hall.
Hours of operation:
Monday-Thursday: 4-9 pm
Please feel free to use the center during the day as a quiet study area. In the evenings, drop for help with your CEE courses. We also have coaches available to help with a few courses outside our Department as well: MEEM2110 (Statics), MEEM2150 (Mechanics of Materials), and ENG3200 (Thermo/Fluids). The last day to add Track A and full semester courses (without instructor approval) is Friday, January 19.
Beginning Monday, January 22, students will need to have the green filled section/late add form signed and brought to the Registrar’s Office in order to be added to a full semester or Track A course or change sections.
Full semester courses may be dropped on MyMichiganTech (Banweb) through Wednesday, January 24, 5:00PM. That date is also the 100% refund date for dropping a full semester course, but with plateau tuition this would only apply if students go below fulltime or are currently part time.
Please note that the Humanities Department has recently added a section of HU 3295, Level III Advanced Spanish for spring, MWF 10-11 am, taught by Leyre Alegre-Figuero.
This course can replace UN 1025 Global Issues and counts for the Spanish minors. Students with AP Spanish or other previous Spanish experience who place into this course can earn 9 placement credits if they pass this class with a B or higher.
This course has the pre-req of HU 3293 or placement of 631 or higher. It is a repeatable topics course, so even if students already have credit for HU 3295 from a previous semester, they can take it again as there will be new content. If you have students who would like to take the Spanish placement exam (a free, online exam) have them contact me or the Humanities Department office.

Hello Civil & Environmental Engineering Students –
Are you interested in studying abroad, but also want to get a summer internship? How about 16 days of bicycling around the world famous cycling infrastructure in The Netherlands (Netherlands where 27% of ALL their daily trips are made by bicycle and it’s easy riding – it is flat terrain!) where we will study bicycle infrastructure, work with students at a Dutch university, meet professionals who plan and design, and so much more? The course runs Sunday, May 20 – Monday, June 4 – plenty of time for you to get back for an internship. The course is offered out of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering Department (by a professor who is a MTU Civil Engineering aluma), yet is available to students at other campuses, such as Michigan Tech, as well.

We will spend 16 days bicycling in large cities (Amsterdam, Zwolle, Utrecht, Houten, Rotterdam, Eindhoven) and small towns in The Netherlands. We will work with students and faculty at Windesheim University and professional designers and planners of the amazing Dutch cycling network. We travel within cities by bicycle and between cities using their sophisticated passenger rail system. This course will give you hands on experience using and understanding how a country creates safe cycling infrastructure. 27% of ALL trips in the Netherlands are made by bicycle! Take this course to experience that!
Explore The Netherlands in Europe while earning course credit! On the UW-Platteville campus This course counts for 3 credits of technical elective in civil and environmental engineering AND for 3 credits of international education general education credits. I am happy to help work with your department to see how this course can transfer back to Michigan Tech.

Note that the cost is listed at $4200 per person- this is the ‘high’ cost – as soon as there are at least 8 people signed up (the cap is 12 students), we can purchase our airline tickets and solidify the airfare, which will likely be lower than my budgeted amount. This cost includes the 3 credit course, round trip airfare from Chicago, 5 day Eurail pass, bicycle rentals, all hotels and hostels, all breakfasts, and bus transfers. Funds not spent will be refunded to you.

Humanities has added another section of HU 2830, Public Speaking and Multimedia and HU 2810 Research and Writing in Communication. Both of these courses count for the Communication/Composition requirement.

Humanities also added another section of HU 2503 Introduction to Literature, which is on the Critical And Creative Thinking list.

Humanities has added an online section of HU 3120, Technical and Professional Communication. There are 9 spaces available in that course.

First year students who have scores of 3 or higher on the AP Spanish exam but weren’t able to take Spanish in the fall can take HU 3293 and get the same 9 placement credits after finishing with a B or higher. We are not able to offer HU 3294, 3295, or 3296 this spring (these are the classes designated for students with AP credit). HU 3293 counts as an alternative to UN 1025 Global Issues.
CM 4990/5900 Membrane Separation Fundamentals and Applications
Time: MWF from 3-4pm.
CM 4990, is for undergraduate seniors. Prereqs: CM 3120 or CEE 4502 or ENG 3200 or MEEM 3201 or MY 3110
CM 5900 is for graduate students.

IGS works to find solutions to problems facing areas in need. Currently, we are engineering a low cost ventilator for a hospital in Ghana and are in active new project development. IGS offers students the opportunity to apply skills to alleviating global problems and collaborating with teams locally and abroad with the possibility of being able to travel. Students in any major are encouraged to join! Fish tacos will be provided!
