Van Buren County Road Commission (VBCRC), located in Lawrence, Michigan, is hiring Paid Engineering Technician Interns. Qualified candidates should have an interest in a summer of hands-on work experience in the field of transportation engineering.
Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
- Preparation of inspector’s daily reports using Fieldbook/FieldManager
- Survey crew activities
- Drafting and calculating quantities, alignment, grade, and location according to project plans
- Construction site inspection activities
- And more!
Highway Engineer, Barry Anttila, will provide oversight and education to selected candidates. Barry graduated from Michigan Technological University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He has 18 years of experience in the Engineering Department of Van Buren County Road Commission and currently oversees a staff of three full-time Engineering Technicians. The environment at VBCRC provides a great learning opportunity for those interested in transportation engineering.

The Emmet County Road Commission (Harbor Springs Michigan) has an opening for a summer intern. The road commission has several larger projects going this year including construction of a timber bridge, a large aluminum box culvert, a cold-in-place pavement recycling project, as well as a variety of other work including overseeing gravel crush production measurements, traffic counts, and assisting with survey work. The road commission pays $15 per hour with a guaranteed 40 hours per week and some overtime on projects. This is a chance to work with one of Michigan Tech’s civil engineering alumni to learn about transportation engineering and construction.

The Houghton County Road Commission (Hancock Michigan) is looking for a summer intern to do construction oversight. The student should be a civil engineering student with interest in transportation. Basic surveying skills are a bonus. The HCRC typically hires younger college students to train them so they can work several summers. Additionally MTU students working at an Upper Peninsula road commission can be eligible for a $500 UP Roadbuilder scholarship for every year of successful completion of the position (supervisor recommends the scholarship).

Project Engineer
- This is a Brighton, Michigan-based position.
- Out of town travel will be required at a minimum bi-weekly for 2-3 days.

- Responsible to assist project managers in the responsibilities of the project, including buyout, scheduling, contracts, change orders, document management, submittals, RFI’s; and responsible to manage the close-out process on projects (see further responsibilities attached).
