Engineering Internship Opportunity at Yosemite NP

The duties of the positions are typically suitable and applicable to Civil Engineering students, but other engineering students may apply.   The internships are typically filled by Junior-level students.  Seniors and Graduate Students who will be continuing their education in 2020/2021 (after the internship) are also eligible.  Sophomores may also qualify, depending on the number of credits they have completed, and if they have previous engineering-related work experience that they document correctly on their resume (see notes 5 and 7).

For students who are interested in a summer or co-op type engineering position at Yosemite, here is a top 9 list of unofficial suggestions:

1) Create an account/profile at www.usajobs.gov.

2) Become familiar with the usajobs.gov website, and how it works.

3) Make sure you understand the Qualification Requirements section, especially the parts with the -OR- statements.  Make sure you select the correct qualification statement in the questionnaire, and that your resume reflects the qualification statement that you selected.

4) Please note that resumes for federal jobs are typical much longer than the private sector.  It is recommended that your resume be about two pages in length, especially if you are currently a sophomore applying for a GS-04 position, or anyone applying for a GS-05 position.

5) If you are active in any student or volunteer organizations, take credit for that by describing your duties and responsibilities, and including how many weeks your were active and how many hours per week you typically spend on those duties and responsibilities, just like you would for describing job experience.  See note 7.

6) Follow the directions in the announcement, to the letter! The announcement format can be hard to read, so it is recommended that you use the “PRINT” button on the right side of the page to view the announcement in its entirety.

7) You must include months, years, and hours per week worked, on your resume, to receive credit for your work (and/or volunteer) experience. Part‐time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as “varies”.

8) For the questions where you have to rate your experience in different areas, be honest, but not humble.  Rate yourself against other students, not the world at large.

9) You must apply by 11:59 PM (EST) on 01/20/2020, but it is better not to wait until the last minute, since the application system can be funky at some times.

Students can contact me at kerstin.henry@gmail.com (until 1/18) for informal and unofficial answers to specific questions, if necessary, but they should read through the announcement thoroughly before doing so.  For official answers to questions, they should contact the HR Representative listed in the announcement.
