MTU World Water Day presentation opportunity

The World Water Day (WWD) Committee asks you to keep in mind that 2022 World Water Day will be virtually celebrated at Michigan Tech from  March 17-22 (the events are being planned now). WWD has been celebrated annually at Michigan Tech since 2007. World Water Day events will again include a student Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition instead of a poster competition, because it is a better fit for our virtual format.  KBIC Tribal Water Day and Michigan Tech World Water Day speakers will present on March 22nd.  There will be an  art show, and other virtual student engagement activities. World Water Day is sponsored worldwide by the United Nations—this year’s theme is “Groundwater – Making the invisible visible”

The student 3MT competition has two categories: (1) original student research; and (2) course-based research. There will be student cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for both categories! 

Here is the link to the Google Form students should use to register for the competition. Students must register by Friday, March 4th. Once registered, the WWD Committee will send a second form to which registered students can submit their video and supporting materials, which will be due the week prior to World Water Day (Friday, March 18). Attached to this note is a link to Michigan Tech’s 2020 winning 3MT presentation by Jordan Ewing. This is a great opportunity for students to enhance their skills in presenting and communicating research and coursework to a lay audience, and also an effective way to motivate students to do their best work! 2021 Design Expo — Registration Now Open

Mark your calendars—the 21st annual Design Expo will be held virtually on Thursday, April 15, 2021.

Important Dates:

Registration Deadline: March 04, 2021, by 11PM

Video and Digital Poster Submission: April 08, 2021, by 11PM

Video Judging: April 12-15, 2021

Virtual Design Expo: April 15, 2021, 2-hour live event

What will this year’s Virtual Design Expo look like?

RocketJudge
RocketJudge is a platform designed to streamline competitions—the platform works with more than 500 different competitions a year around the world to provide electronic scoring for professional conferences, university poster sessions, invention conventions, science fairs and more.

Who will use RocketJudge: Enterprise and Senior Design team videos will be asynchronously scored by judges over the course of four (4) days, April 12 – April 15, leading up to the Virtual Design Expo, April 15, 2021. Prior to the start of Virtual Design Expo, judges will have the opportunity to review team video presentations and assign a score.

Zoom
Who will use Zoom: The Michigan Tech community, friends, family, and corporate sponsors are invited to tune into Zoom for the Design Expo Opening Remarks to officially kick-off the event. More information to come.

Gatherly
Gatherly is a platform designed for spatial video chat. The platform lets users move around and talk freely to others at the event. As soon as you move close to someone on the map, you automatically start video-chatting with them. Move into an open group, and you’ll join their conversation seamlessly.

Who will use Gatherly: The Michigan Tech community, friends, family, and project sponsors are invited to tune into Gatherly for a 2-hour event where teams and audience members have the chance to engage in conversations over project work, discoveries, and everything in between. Registration for Gatherly is coming soon.

Oroville Spillway Recovery Effort Presentation

Presentation Background: In the first two months of 2017, atmospheric rivers dumped an entire average year’s runoff (4.4 million acre-feet) into Lake Oroville. Amid this extreme weather, erosion of the main, gated spillway at Oroville Dam triggered the use of the adjacent emergency spillway for the first time. Subsequent erosion of the hillside below the emergency spillway and concerns about its possible failure prompted the Butte County Sheriff to order a mandatory evacuation of nearly 200,000 people living downstream of Lake Oroville.

In 2017, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) completed the first phase of the Lake Oroville Spillways Emergency Recovery Project—rebuilding and strengthening the 3,000-foot long main spillway to safely handle flows of 100,000 cubic-feet per second for the 2018 wet season. In 2018, DWR reconstructed the top 730 feet of the main spillway and added structural concrete to the middle portion of the spillway to make it capable of passing flows of 270,000 cubic-feet per second. In 2019, DWR also reconstructed the emergency spillway. The upper portion of the hillside spillway has been armored under several feet of roller-compacted concrete and a concrete cut-off wall has been placed in the bedrock to prevent any erosion from migrating uphill.

DWR has also developed a comprehensive needs assessment for the Oroville Dam complex to identify priorities and solutions to bolster the integrity and resilience of the complex to assure public safety.

Speaker Bio: Michelle Banonis is a 1999 Environmental Engineering graduate of Michigan Tech.  She is currently the Assistant Chief Deputy Director of the California Department of Water Resources out of Sacramento, which oversees the largest user-funded water infrastructure project in the country and delivers water to nearly 30 million people.  Previously, Michelle worked for the U.S. Department of the Interior – Bureau of Reclamation as well Pierce County Washington Public Works and Utilities.  She is a licensed attorney and has worked in the areas of policy, law, biology, ecology, and engineering.  Michelle is also an elected board member of the National Lawyers Guild which seeks to further social justice reform.
