Internship/Co-op: Team Elmers

Co-op or Internship

This is a temporary position involving various duties that permit exposure to the student’s field of study and/or provide experience that is a useful addition to the student’s education and meaningful preparation for future professional employment. Internships are open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are pursuing degrees in Civil Engineering and Construction Management. In-the-field work includes but is not limited to daily take-offs, tracking quantities, day-to-day communication with inspectors, supporting the Project Manager and possibly overseeing the project for the Project Manager. In-the-office work includes but is not limited to site visits, take-offs from plans, attending pre-bid meetings and bid openings, placing field quantities into a spreadsheet, managing contract paperwork and documentation, organizing contract files, etc.

The Co-o/Internship program has four major objectives:

will think enthusiastically about construction and what they have learned about
    the highway/heavy construction industry.
  2. Provide interns with a practical, hands-on learning experience where they will be
    directly involved in the work.
  3. Create a pipeline for the best of the best employees to join Team Elmer’s upon
    graduation from college.
  4. Keep Team Elmer’s Division Managers in touch with the new generation of
workers and provide a superior group of candidates to preview.

Transportation Seminar – October 6th

Dr. Bill Sproule, Professor Emeritus, Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering

WORLD’S FAIRS AND TRANSPORTATION INNOVATION

Abstract: World Fairs have been forgotten by most who live in North America because the last one was held in 1986 in Vancouver, Canada. However, they are still being held in other countries on specific themes. The 20th Century World’s Fairs were major events celebrated in the host city and the world, and transportation exhibits and projects were always a popular feature of these expositions. The presentation will explore the history of World’s Fairs and the transportation innovations that have amazed Fair attendees through the years.

Bio: Dr. Bill Sproule is a Professor Emeritus at Michigan Technological University, where he taught and directed research projects in transportation engineering, traffic safety, public transit, airport planning and design, and hockey history for almost 25 years. He has been active in several professional associations including ASCE, ITE, TRB, the American Planning Association, and the Society for International Hockey Research. Bill retired five years ago but has continued his work in automated people movers and hockey history.

Scholarship: Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association (WTBA)Scholarship

WTBA opens applications for 2024 construction engineering scholarships

From learning complicated mathematics, to IT and computer skills, and understanding the precision and accuracy required to run heavy machinery – there is no shortage of challenges the transportation construction builders of thefuture face in earning their degrees.

Paying for their education shouldn’t be one of them.

It’s why today the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association (WTBA) and its WTBA of Tomorrow Board proudly opened applications for a new round of construction engineering scholarships.

Students studying civil or construction engineering, construction technology, construction management, or related programs at UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Platteville, UW-Stout, Marquette University, Milwaukee School of Engineering or Michigan Tech are eligible to apply for WTBA’s $5,000 Engineering Scholarships.

Students studying any of the above-mentioned programs at Madison College, Chippewa Valley, Mid-State, Northeastern Wisconsin, or Milwaukee Area technical colleges are eligible to apply for WTBA’s $3,000 Engineering Scholarships.

“Every year, WTBA awards scholarships to some of the brightest students in Wisconsin,” WTBA of Tomorrow Chairman Matt Golden said.  “The scholarship applications we receive illustrate the diversity of well qualified candidates, promising a great future for the transportation industry.”

In addition to filling out the online application, students must upload two (2) letters of recommendation, their most recent college transcript, and a cover letter detailing their passion for transportation construction and why they believe they are deserving of a WTBA scholarship.

In 2023, seven students won WTBA scholarships, which were awarded and celebrated during the annual Contractor-Engineer Conference in Wisconsin Dells in January.  You can hear from all of those winners here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9v5hkyekXVhJFUwwC1Fv-1kCbTcbsRFO

Find more information and the application page here: https://wtba.org/member-resources/scholarships/

The deadline to apply is Friday, November 10, 2023.
