Construction Project Engineer/Assistant Project Manager

The position requirements are:

  • Industrial/commercial construction experience is a plus
  • Project Engineering experience is a plus
  • A Bachelors degree in engineering or construction management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Products; Word, Excel and Project
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

This full time position offers full benefits – medical, vacation, 401K, and bonuses. The project engineer will be responsible for supporting the project team with job duties to include daily reports, logging project data, estimating, RFIs, submittals, and project manager and field superintendent support.

Scholarship: ASCE – Mackinac & Zuidema Scholarship

The Michigan Section of the ASCE encourages the advancement of the Civil Engineering profession by qualified and interested students. To that end, the ASCE Michigan Section offers financial support through two scholarships. These scholarships have been endowed through the efforts and generosity of individual Civil Engineers and leading Civil Engineering companies throughout Michigan. Applications are due by Memorial Day. 

Mackinac Scholarship – Named in honor of Michigan’s #1 Civil Engineering Project of the 20th Century by the ASCE Michigan Section membership in December 1999, the Mackinac Scholarship is intended to recognize a premier Civil Engineering student from Michigan. The award will be presented annually, and will consist of a two-year grant of $5,000 each year (totaling $10,000 over a two-year period) to a student entering his or her junior year at an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program. The award considers merit, personal initiative, and financial need and encourages both participation in a student chapter of ASCE and contributions to the advancement of student engineering.

Zuidema Scholarship – Named in honor of an outstanding Past-President of the Michigan Section and the Western Michigan Branch of ASCE, the Marvin L. Zuidema Scholarship Award is presented annually to a student member of ASCE who has made a contribution to the advancement of student engineering activities. This award will consist of a one-time grant of $1,500, and considers academic performance as an indication of preparation for a future career in Civil Engineering. The Zuidema scholarship is available to either a junior or senior in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program.

Leaders in Continuous Improvement (LCI) – looking for new e-board members

Leaders in Continuous Improvement (LCI) https://www.involvement.mtu.edu/organization/lci is looking for new e-board members for the student organization.

Leaders in Continuous Improvement is a student organization that helps build Lean skills through a variety of methods including hands on activities coupled with Lean training, industry tours and presentations, on-campus improvement opportunities such as 5S and other kaizens, and networking opportunities. I’m the advisor for LCI; if you would like to be a co-advisor, let me know!

This year the entire e-board has chosen not to continue for next year, though they would be willing to consult with new board members. It’s been an exhausting year for all, and the current eboard has run out of energy. A budget has been submitted for next year, so everything is ready to go. We just need a new leadership team!

Climate Reality Campus Corps has organized a team of students with representatives from each sustainability student organization on campus, and we are developing A Student Vision for Environmental Stewardship and Climate Action: a student-generated vision of what a greener, cleaner future for our campus could look like. Summer Research @ GLRC – MTU

Graduate or undergraduate summer hourly position – Great Lakes Research Center – Energy, water, and climate change dataset

Seeking a currently enrolled Michigan Tech graduate or upper-level undergraduate student for a summer hourly position to compile Great Lakes datasets on water use and energy (i.e., solar, wind, heating / cooling, and wave energy). The student will work with an interdisciplinary team of faculty, staff, and students that is collecting energy, water, and climate change related datasets during the summer of 2021. The team will discuss and prioritize future research directions in energy-water-climate
nexus issues. Graduate and upper-level undergraduate students will have primary responsibility for identifying, documenting, and compiling relevant datasets which will be used in future research. Applicants should have good attention to detail, some experience in coding, and willingness to learn good data management practices.

Dr. Lenters is an Associate Research Scientist with the Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) at Michigan Technological University, and he has affiliated positions with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Atmospheric Sciences Program. The project team collaborates with numerous other groups on campus, including the Keweenaw Energy Transitions Laboratory, Advanced Power Systems Laboratory, and departments such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Social Sciences. Applicants should therefore bring a strong technical background along with interest in energy systems and/or interdisciplinary work in environmental science.

Required Background:

  • Currently enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate student at Michigan Tech

Desired background:

  • At least two years of undergraduate education or (preferably) already holding a B.S. in mathematics, physics, engineering, or related field in environmental or data science
  • Good programming and analytical skills (e.g., Matlab, R)
  • Experience with data management and quality control
  • Experience with accessing and using atmospheric and hydrologic datasets, including climate data and model output (e.g., general circulation models).
  • Research or educational experience in climate science, hydrology, and/or energy systems (power plants, commercial buildings, residential buildings, or renewable energy)
